Configuration

13 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Configuration - InRoads

• You can no longer enable/disable the product from within

MicroStation.
• Cannot “mdl load/unload inroads”

14 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Configuration - GEOPAK

We have removed the following variable:

GPK_NOAUTOACTIVATE

This variable caused GEOPAK to be inactive (no license was checked

out) when MicroStation was invoked. The user could then “activate
GEOPAK” from the Applications menu whenever they wanted and a
license would be checked out at that time.
For various reasons, technical and otherwise, this variable is removed.
** Users still have the option of starting MicroStation with or without
GEOPAK/InRoads, but this would be done via separate icons or from
the start menu.

Object Model Change (SELECTseries 4 Only)

In order to facilitate data exchange, there is an object model change in

SELECTseries 4.
As such, any OpenRoads civil data created with previous versions of V8i
SELECTseries 3 will have to be upgraded when opened with V8i SELECTseries
4.
By default, the following upgrade prompt will be encountered:

16 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

New Configuration Variables

If you wish the upgrade prompt to be hidden from the user, there are two
configuration variables that can be used to control it’s behavior:
CIVIL_UPGRADE_PROMPT_OFF = 1
When this variable is set, it will hide the upgrade prompt and automatically upgrade
the file with no warning (i.e. the upgrade prompt will not appear).
CIVIL_OPEN_OLD_READONLY = 1
When this variable is set along with the previous one, it will hide the upgrade prompt
and open the file as read-only without performing any upgrade.
Note: Both of these variables can be set to any value (i.e. what number is used is of
no consequence).

FAQ
Q: Is this a DGN format change?

• No, it is not a DGN format change, it is a change to civil objects only.

Q: Do I need to update all my dgn files?

• No, you do not need to update files that do not contain civil elements (e.g. seed
files, MicroStation cell files, border drawings, etc.).

Q: What about reference files?

• You do not need to upgrade all your reference files. Only files that contain civil data
(survey, horizontal & vertical geometry, terrain, corridor, civil cells, etc.) will require
updating, and only when you open them.

For example, if you open a corridor file and upgrade it to SELECTseries 4, you can
still process that corridor even if all the references file remain in a SELECTseries 3
format.

Geometry

38 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Geometry

• Rework line/arc to commands (H&V)

– More dynamic / intuitive / usable
– Changed sequence to pick element, through point

39 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Geometry
• New Command: Copy Element
• Command variants:
– Rule
• Creates new instance of geometry with incremented name
• Same feature
• Includes all intervals (gaps)

– No Rules
• Creates new instance of geometry with incremented name
• Same feature
• Removes all intervals (gaps)
• Removes all rules

• How is it different from MicroStation Copy?

– MS Copy is not ruled, not featurized, not named, not true
geometry

40 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Geometry

• New Command: Complex Redefine

– Allows an existing complex alignment to be
partially redefined over a range, substituting in
new horizontal geometry.
– Preserves the original feature name, allowing all
rules built off the original geometry to update.
– Affects all rules relating to the alignment meaning
other geometry, superelevation, corridors,
terrains, civil cells, etc will all need to reprocess.
– Vertical geometry from the original alignment is
preserved and carried forward to the newly
formed alignment.
– Segment from the original alignment that is
replaced is retained in the model and is allocated
a new name.
– Rules over reference files will need to be opened
to initiate the update.

Modeling

48 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Import IRD
New Command: Import IRD
– Only one corridor at a time can be imported.

– An imported corridor’s baseline horizontal and profile

geometry must already exist in the design file or an
attached reference file.

– Imported corridors will always target the active

terrain model, but corridors may be imported without
an active Terrain Model.

49 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Import IRD
A corridor’s missing dependencies will be reported at the time of import. The import can
then be canceled or continued with missing dependencies.

Corridor dependencies include secondary alignment geometry, point controls and

target aliasing.

50 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Corridor Dependency Report

If you want to review your dependencies prior to importation, you can run
the Corridor Dependency Report against the .ird file.

Corridor Dependency Report

52 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Import IRD
• Corridor objects that are missing a dependency will
not be imported.
For example, if a point control is a corridor feature point
control, the corridor and the corridor feature must already
exist. If they do not, the point control will not be imported.

• In order for a Target Alias to be imported at least

one of it’s dependencies must exist in the design
model. Missing aliases will not be imported.

• All dependencies will be matched by name with

objects in the design model.

Modeling Performance

A client reported that after importing an interchange from SELECTseries

2, it took in excess of 7 minutes to process an update to the corridor (e.g.
adding a key station).
Granted, this was a large project, containing over 20 different corridors
as well as multiple corridor clipping references.
After making changes to enhance the performance, the same testing
now processes in about 2.5 minutes.
However, keep in mind that the improved performance can fluctuate
depending on variables within the project.

Model Interoperability

This type of data exchange between different systems, software,

technologies or disciplines is a common requirement.
Yet even today it’s done in bits and pieces (e.g. propriety formats, ASCII
formats, LandXML, CAD graphics).
These workflows have their own inherent problems:

• All of these are just pieces of the model, and the user on the other side
has to continually re-create the missing pieces.

• There is a lot of missing intelligence. Most of the formats we use to

exchange data are ‘dumbed-down’ in order to be more readily accessible
by other technologies.

71 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Model Interoperability

In order to overcome these limitations, we introduced the Integrated Civil i-

model (ICM).

This is an i-model based on a defined schema that allows the transfer

of the model between any software packages that support the ICM.

72 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Model Interoperability
• Create/Update – OpenRoads can create and update Integrated Civil i-model’s that can
then be imported into any application that supports them.

• Reading – OpenRoads can read Integrated Civil i-model’s that have been
modified/created in any application that supports them.

• Change Tracking – OpenRoads can compare Integrated Civil i-model’s and display the
graphical and property differences between them.

73 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

OpenRoads Technology

74 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Model Interoperability
Although we worked closely with Trimble to define this schema, it is not proprietary
to Trimble.
The Integrated Civil i-model can be accessed by other applications using
Bentley’s Software Development Kit (SDK).

Horizontal Geometry Enhancements
• Best fit regression on B-spline elements provides improved performance and the
creation of spiral based alignments.

• Support the import of following Transition Spirals:

– Bloss
– Biquadratic
– Cosine
– Sinusoid
– Half-Bloss
– Half-Biquadratic
– Half-Cosine
– Half-Sinusoids

106 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Horizontal Geometry Enhancements
• Improved tool tips from geometry to show what the geometry belongs to (or where it
originated from).

107 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Terrain Model Enhancements
• A new explicitly defined <Boundary> option has been added to the terrain model edge
conditions.

108 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Terrain Model Enhancements
• Complex terrain models are now allowed when the base terrain models boundaries do
not overlap.

109 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Terrain Model Enhancements
• Create Terrain Model Boundary tool has been added.
– Extract Graphic - Will allow the creation of a graphical boundary element that
reflects the current limits of the triangulation of the given terrain model.
– Add Boundary – Adds a boundary internally ( no graphic) to the terrain using the
current limits of triangulation.
– Add Ruled Boundary – Does both of the above … creates a graphical boundary
element and then rules that graphical element to the boundary of the terrain.

Modeling Enhancements
• Template library organizer now allows copy of edited linear templates in a DGN back
to the library (previously only worked with corridor templates ).

• Linear Template are now able to be renamed in Quick Properties.

• Linear Templates have been extended to always include external control points for
improved modelling accuracy that was previously only available using full corridor
modeling.

111 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Modeling Enhancements
• Template drop description has been added to the corridor objects dialog.

• Design Stage artifacts, Top Mesh and Template Geometry, persists rules regardless
if they are on/off in the Design Stage settings. This is true for both corridors and linear
templates.

This results in multiple benefits, such as:

– Target Aliasing seeks top mesh of Corridors and Linear Templates instead of
nearest component, resulting in faster processing.
– You can now drape 2D elements directly on the corridor without having to create a
terrain.

112 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Modeling Enhancements
• When an End Condition seeks something other than a surface (e.g. linear elements via
Horizontal, Vertical, or Both), the elements must be added as a Corridor Reference in
order to populate the Target Alias dialog.
– This results in much faster processing since the software doesn’t have to search all
the elements in the file. It only searches for and lists the elements that are listed as
Corridor References.

• Optimized performance when the base alignment contains B-splines, or when targeting
B-splines elements as corridor point controls and feature definition constraints.
– B-Splines are normally created when you copy parallel geometry that contains
spirals.

i-model and icm enhancements

• i-model presentation of the civil model

has been improved so Items Browser
closely reflects the civil model
represented by Project Explorer when a
civil application is present.
This makes for easier navigation and
reporting in the i-model.
• Exporting the .icm.dgn now includes the
graphical representation of the civil data
being exported.

114 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

i-model and icm enhancements

• WYSIWYG Publish
– Publish Displayed Attachments Only
– Excellent way to make the files smaller

115 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Sy stems, Incorporated

Interoperability Enhancements
• When using the File > Publish i-model option to publish an i-model, you can now include the civil
data (an example of this would be publishing an i-model for the OpenRoads mobile application).

In order to do this, you will need to set the following CFG variable:

CIVIL_iMODEL_INCLUDE_ICM=1 *** Publish Design Models only

CIVIL_iMODEL_INCLUDE_ICM=2 *** Publish Terrain Models only

CIVIL_iMODEL_INCLUDE_ICM=3 *** Publish both design and terrain models

If variable is not set then no civil data will be saved to i-model.
