Time allocation for the six subjects taught in the Intermediate Phase, as required by CAPS:
Physical Education may be timetabled after a break so that learners can change into
their Phys Ed clothes before the lesson begins. In addition, Physical Education periods
may be timetabled consecutively because preparations can be extensive when setting
up apparatus.
It is useful to timetable two Creative Arts periods consecutively for at least one day to
allow for maximised use of time when teaching Visual Arts. This is important
because:
o Visual Arts preparations are often more time-consuming than other subjects.
o Learner creativity must be encouraged, which is difficult to accomplish under
the pressure of time constraints.
o The CAT for Visual Arts must consist of a creative task that takes at least
three periods to complete. This is more easily accomplished during extended
Visual Arts lessons.
