The endocrine system consists of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream to regulate distant target organs and tissues. The major glands include the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain, thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck, adrenal glands atop the kidneys, pancreas, gonads, and pineal gland in the brain. Hormones produced include regulatory hormones like oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone, as well as hormones that influence growth, metabolism, fluid balance, sexual development and function, stress response, and circadian rhythms.
