Tools or Resources:
Objective:
Given a working Lexmark X74x printer, X74x Service Manual, X74x User’s Guide,
C73x/X73x/C74x/X74x Color Product Study Guide and tools, be able to:
Locate, remove and re-install the specified printer and scanner components and parts,
Perform the Scanner Manual Registration procedure,
Perform the adjustments required after a Printhead replacement:
- Skew,
- Registration (Black Plane),
- Alignment* (Color Planes),
Perform the adjustment required after a Transfer Module replacement:
- Color Alignment*.
Criteria: The printer and scanner must function within specification after the exercise, no
unnecessary parts are removed during the procedure, no parts are broken, all parts are re-
installed correctly and all screws are replaced in their correct locations; all special procedures
are properly performed. Once the module is completed, the printer is able to print the Menu
Settings Page and the scanner is able to scan/copy successfully.
* The Alignment and Color Alignment are two completely different alignment procedures.
Skill Check:
Using the X74x Service Manual, X74x User’s Guide and Lexmark C73x/X73x/C74x/X74x Color
Product Study Guide, do the following:
Locate, remove and re-install the specified printer and scanner components and parts,
Perform the Scanner Manual Registration procedure,
Perform the adjustments required after a Printhead replacement:
- Skew,
- Registration (Black Plane),
- Alignment (Color Planes),
Perform the adjustment required after an ITU replacement:
- Color Alignment,
Print the Menu Settings page to verify the printer works correctly,
Scan and Copy the Menu Settings page from the Flatbed and ADF to verify the Scanner
Unit works correctly.
Relevance:
Knowing the location of the repair parts and how to remove and install them are necessary for
any technician. In addition, some parts or removals require special procedures or adjustments
once the repair is complete. These adjustments are important for the printer to function as it was
intended. If these adjustments are not performed properly or forgotten, the printer may not
function or exhibit problems.
What to Learn:
As you complete this module, familiarize yourself with the particular parts, procedures and
adjustments of this printer.
Following the guidelines below will help separate the competent from the inept; it makes
no difference whether you are a rookie just learning the ropes or a seasoned veteran with
many years of experience.
Read the instructions – this seems like a simple thing, and it is; but a number of
technicians prefer to skip the directions and do it their “own way”. Unfortunately, most of
those end up having to do things over – or worse yet, having to fix the mess they created.
Do yourself a favor and ALWAYS read the instructions.
Verify the symptoms – too many technicians are screwdriver happy and immediately
start taking parts off a printer and disassembling things. Whoa! Granted, this is the fun
part of the job, but take a few minutes to examine the printer, operate it and make sure
you know what the problem is before you pick up that screwdriver. Look for the obvious.
User error – nearly 30% of all equipment failures are the result of user error. Keep this
in mind before replacing parts.
Try quick fixes – if you know a particular problem may be resolved by a simple
procedure, try it. If it fixes the problem, great! If not, then at least you have narrowed
down the source of the problem.
Restore Factory Defaults – if you can access the menus, print the Menu Settings Pages
and then restore the factory defaults. This quick procedure will solve a number of
strange and unusual issues.
Use common sense – if the parts you have in hand don’t match the problem you
observe, then question it. Hasty technicians will go ahead and put the wrong part in the
printer.
Check, check, and check again – the most common cause of errors after service is
performed is due to servicer error. Save yourself time (and embarrassment) of having to
disassemble the equipment again and check these common problem areas:
- Parts installed incorrectly – circuit boards not flush with their mounting,
clutches not anchored, insulation sheets not installed, etc.
- Wires crimped – this may or may not cause immediate failure, but it is almost
guaranteed to cause a failure sometime down the road. Make sure you route
wires correctly through the printer and double check that none are pinched
behind boards or sitting against motors or other moving parts.
Read each Service Manual removal procedure carefully before attempting to remove or
install a part. Take note as to which board connectors do not have a cable connected. In
addition, route the cables correctly or they may not reach their connections, or covers
may not fit properly.

Warnings:
1
Scanner MDC Card and System Board – these two components mirror the
critical NVRAM settings for the X74x printer. Please see the section called Mirrored NVRAM
in the C73x/X73x Color Product Study Guide for more information. In addition, if you have
not already done so, complete the online course Mirrored NVRAM from Lexmark’s online
learning site. Be aware that the NVRAM components differ between the single function
(C73x/C74x) and the Multifunction (X73x/X74x) products.
2
ADF Unit, Flatbed and Scanner MDC Board – the Scanner Unit must be
manually registered with the Scanner Manual Registration procedure whenever the ADF
unit, Flatbed unit, or MDC Board is replaced.
3
Transfer Module – when a new Transfer Module is installed, a Color Alignment
Procedure must be performed through the Configuration Menu. This is a course alignment
and is not the same as the Alignment procedure that is performed when adjusting the
printhead.
4
Printhead – when the printhead is replaced, always perform the
Skew, Registration (black planes) and Alignment (color planes) procedures.
Removals
Put a check mark beside each part as you remove and install it. Once you complete the
removals section, proceed to the next Skill Check for this module.
