Note: Answer TWO full questions, selecting atleast ONE question from each Part

PART-A

1. A Simple Rankine cycle works between pressures of 30 bar and 0.04 bar, the initial condition of
steam being dry saturated. Calculate the cycle efficiency and work ratio. (7M)
OR
2. In a reheat cycle, the initial steam pressure and maximum temperature are 150 bar and 550 0 C
respectively. If the condenser pressure is 0.1 bar and the moisture at the condenser pressure inlet is
5% and assuming ideal processor, determine : (7M)
i) Reheat pressure ii) Cycle efficiency iii) Steam rate

PART-B

3. The following observations were made during one hour test on a single cylinder 4- stroke oil
engine.Bore = 300 mm , stroke = 450 mm , mass of fuel used = 8.8 kg , Calorific value of fuel =
41800 KJ/Kg, average speed = 200 rpm , mean effective pressure = 5.8 bar, brake load = 1860 N,
mass of cooling water circulated = 650 kg, temp r rise = 220C, diameter of brake drum = 1.22 m.
Calculate: i) ῃmech ii) ῃBth iii) Draw heat balance heat (8 M)

OR

4. The following data were obtained from a morse test on a 4- cylinder, 4- stroke cycle S.I engine
coupled to hydraulic dynamometer operating at a constant speed of 1500 rpm. (8 M)
Brake load with all the four cylinders firing = 296 N
Brake load with cylinder Nos.1, 2, 3 & 4 not firing are 201 N
206 N
192 N
201 N
200 N
The brake power in Kw is calculated wrong.
The equation BP = WN/42300, where W = Brake load in Newtons (N)
N = Speed of the engine in rpm

Calculate: i) Brake Power

ii) Indicated Power
iii) Friction Power
iv) Mechanical Efficiency
