MTH 311: Analysis

Assignment 3
August 24, 2018

1. Let F be a collection of sets in Rn , and let S = ∪A∈F A and T = ∩A∈F A. For each of the following statements,
either give a proof or exhibit a counterexample.
(a) If x is an accumulation point of T , then x is an accumulation point of each set A in F .
(b) If x is an accumulation point of S, then x is an accumulation point of at least one set A in F .

2. (Lindelöf covering theorem) Assume A ⊆ Rn and let F be an open covering of A, then there is a countable
sub-collection of F which also covers A. (hint: Use the result proved in class that any point x ∈ S, S ⊆ Rn
open, is contained in an n-ball having center with rational coordinates and having rational radii).
3. Prove that the set S of rational numbers in the interval (0, 1) cannot be expressed as the intersection of a
countable collection of open sets. (hint: Use Cantor intersection theorem).

4. Let S ⊆ Rn and every infinite subset of S has an accumulation point in S, then S is compact (this completes
the theorem done in class regarding three equivalent criteria for a set S ⊆ Rn being compact).
5. If S ⊆ Rn , prove that the collection of isolated points of S is countable.
6. Give an example of a set S which is closed but not bounded and exhibit a countable open covering F such that
no finite subset of F covers S.
