Before we study coupling, we must know about
KEYS
What is a key??

• A Key is a piece of mild steel inserted

between the shaft and hub or boss
of the pulley to connect these
together so as to prevent relative
motion between them.
• Temporary fasteners
• Subjected to crushing and shear
stresses
• Keyway is a slot to accommodate key
Shaft Coupling
• Shafts are usually up to 7 meters (according to RS
Khurmi) in length due to inconvenience in
transport.
• So, it becomes necessary to join them by means
of coupling.

(By careful selection, installation and maintenance

of couplings, substantial savings can be made in
reduced maintenance costs and downtime.)
History of Shaft coupling
• First record of the coupling takes us back to
3500 B.C.
• UNIVERSAL COUPLING used by GREEKS
• Father of Flexible Coupling: JEROME CARDAN
WHY IS COUPLING NECESSARY?
• To provide connections
• To provide for misalignment of shaft
• To provide mechanical flexibility
• To reduce transmission of shock loads from one shaft to
other
• To protect against overload
Note:
(DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLUTCH AND COUPLING)
Coupling used to make permanent or
semi-permanent connection

Clutch used to permit rapid connection or

disconnection at the will of the operator
Requirements of a good shaft Coupling

(Based on the type of coupling to be used and

necessity of coupling as stated above)
TYPES OF SHAFT COUPLING
Shaft Coupling
Rigid Coupling
• Sleeve or Muff Coupling
• Clamp or split muff or compression Coupling
• Flange Coupling
• Unprotected type flange coupling
• Protected type flange coupling
• Marine type flange coupling

Flexible Coupling
• Bushed pin type coupling
• Universal Coupling
• Oldham Coupling
Rigid Coupling: 1) Sleeve or Muff
Coupling
• Simplest rigid coupling, made of cast iron
• Consists of a hollow cylinder whose inner
diameter is same as that of the shaft
• Fitted over ends by means of gib head key
• Power transmitted from one shaft to other by
means of key and sleeve
How does Muff Coupling work??
• Let’s see an animated video.
2) Clamp or Compression Coupling
• Also known as split muff coupling
• Muff or sleeve is made into two halves and
bolted together
• Used for heavy duty and moderate speeds
Clamp coupling
3) Flange Coupling
• Has two separate cast iron flanges mounted
on shaft end and keyed
• Coupled by means of nuts and bolts
• Used on heavy loads
Flange Coupling
Types of flange coupling
Unprotected type Protected type Marine type
• Each shaft keyed • The • Flanges are

flange with

are protected • Flanges are held
• Flange coupled
with nuts and by flanges on by means of
bolts the two halves tapered
• Keys are arranged of the headless bolts

circumference of • Helps to avoid

caused by
keyways
Unprotected Flange Coupling
Protected Flange Coupling
Marine Flange Coupling
Flexible Coupling: 1) Bushed pin
flexible coupling
• Modification of rigid type flange coupling
• Coupling bolts are called pins
• Rubber or leather bushes are used over pins
• Clearance 5 mm between the flanges
• Drive takes place through compressible rubber
or leather bushes
Bushed Pin Coupling
2) Oldham Coupling
• Used to join two shafts which have lateral mis-
alignment
• has three discs, one coupled to the input, one
coupled to the output, and a middle disc that
is joined to the first two by tongue and
groove.
Oldham’s Coupling
3) Universal (or Hooke’s) Coupling
• Used to connect two shafts whose axes
intersect at a small angle
• Inclination of the two shafts may be constant,
but in actual practice. It varies when the
motion is transmitted from one shaft to
another
• Main application can be found in the
transmission from gear box to differential or
back axle of the automobiles
Universal Coupling
LETS DESIGN….MUFF COUPLING

• Example 13.4. (RS Khurmi - Page:481)

• Design and make a neat dimensioned sketch of a
muff coupling which is used to connect two steel
shafts transmitting 40 kW at 350 r.p.m. The
material for the shafts and key is plain carbon
steel for which allowable shear and crushing
stresses may be taken as 40 MPa and 80 Mpa
respectively. The material for the muff is cast iron
for which the allowable shear stress may be
assumed as 15 MPa.
