Canaltown Days Parade Grand Marshal Sharon Condit
honored for her contributions to school district and the community
By Steve Buchiere | Freelance Writer
Nazareth, after majoring in music the first two years. Condit returned after college
to her native Long Island, where she opened a health food store. She married her
husband Ralph, and they began a family. But music was still close to her heart. She
did some piano playing for the local school district, and a superintendent suggested
she was missing her calling.
She and the family returned to the Rochester area, and she pursued her music
degree at Naz, doing her student teaching at Pal-Mac, where she eventually became
a full-time teacher in 1991. In the first phase of her career at Pal-Mac, she worked
as an itinerant teacher, shifting between the Palmyra elementary and the middle
school on any given day. She shifted to the high school in 2007, where she took on
the marching band, a group that had experienced five different directors in 10 years
before her arrival.
“That’s a lot of turnover,” said the Webster resident. “They really didn’t establish
program and they didn’t establish continuity.”
Condit didn’t have much time to settle into the band director job. The first gig of
the season comes at the Canaltown Days Parade, and the band has just a couple of
weeks to prepare. She got through it, she said, with a lot of help from her students.
However, little did she know that her Canaltown Days involvement was going to
go a little deeper. It happened when Tom and Debbie Klemann invited her to their
