F 5609 1996 Explanatory note

JIS F 5609-1996

Shipbuilding – Forged steel 20K reflex type water gauges with cocks for boilers −
Explanatory note

This explanatory note accounts for the matters specified in the text, and related matters, but is not part of
the Japanese Industrial Standard.

1. Purpose of constitution As for a standard of cocks for marine boilers, there were previously JIS F
5602 (Bronze 20kg/cm2 type water gauge cocks for boilers) and JIS F 5603 (Bronze 20kg/cm2 water gauge
drain cocks for boilers) (abolished November 1, 1967). These cocks are however rarely used for the reason
that water easily leaks through their packings, etc. and the products made by specialized water gauge
manufacturers are mostly applied.
In this case, modifying these JIS cocks might be possible, but this standard is constituted by the support
of major opinion that a new standard should be prepared with the cooperation of these specialized manufacturers,
taking account of the actual circumstances where their products are widely accepted.

2.2 Contents of revisions

2.2.1 1976 Revision Since International System of Units (SI) specified in JIS Z 8203 (SI units and
recommendations for the use of their multiples and of certain units) is introduced, the said units and relevant
values are added in parenthesis { } for reference, along with revisions on the drawing related notation
following the revision of JIS B 0001 (Technical drawing for mechanical engineering), and on the form, words
and phrases of the standard.
Other revisions are as follows.
(1) SUS27B in JIS G 4303 (Stainless steel bars), a reference standard for ○ 7 cock plug and ○ 17 steel ball, is

revised into SUS403.

(2) BsBF2 in JIS H 3423 (Brass bars for forgery), a reference standard for ○ 8 bonnet, ○ 9 cover nut, ○ 15
packing gland and ○ 16 gland nut, is revised into BsBFD2.
(3) SWRM3 in JIS G 3505 (Low carbon steel wire rods), a reference standard for ○ 14 split pin and ○
36 rivet,

is revised into SWRM12.

(4) SUS52B in JIS G 4303, a reference standard for ○ 18 steel ball seating plug, is revised into SUS42J1.
(5) CuB1-0 in JIS H 3401 (Copper bars), a reference standard for ○ 22 nipple for copper pipe, is revised into

TCuBD1-0 in JIS H 3405 (Tough pitch copper bars).

(6) SS34 in JIS G 3101 (Rolled steels for general structure) is deleted from the reference standards for the
material of nipples for steel pipes, leaving only S15C in JIS G 4051 (Carbon steels for machine structure
use).

(7) CuP1-0 in JIS H 3101 (Copper plates), a reference standard for ○ 27 ~○
31 gaskets, is revised into TCuP1-0

in JIS H 3103 (Tough pitch copper plates).

(8) BsW2S in JIS H 3521 (Brass wires), a reference standard for ○ 32 set pin, is revised into BsW2.

2.2.2 1988 Revision The revisions are as follows.

(1) Units and relevant values are corrected in accordance with International System of Units (SI), and
previous units and relevant values are added in parenthesis { }.
A corresponding value method is adopted in the introduction of the International System of Units
(SI) (the second stage) in conformity to JIS for piping equipment including flange and fitting etc. and
relevant values in parentheses { } shall be specified values. However, this measure shall be on hold
till reason for above-mentioned conformity will be dissolved, as SI will transfer to the third stage.
(2) It is revised according to ISO 5208 that water leakage tests shall be carried out at a pressure 1.1 times
greater than maximum working pressure, and water gauge water pressure tests at a pressure 1.5 times
greater than maximum working pressure [previously, the water leakage test pressure is about 5% higher
than MWP (25 + 1 = 26) and water gauge test pressure is about 2 times higher than MWP (25 × 2 = 50)].
(3) Reference standard numbers and drawing related notation are revised.
2.2.3 This 1996 Revision After transfer to the third stage of SI, the relevant values and units in parentheses
{ } are deleted. With the adoption of new relevant values in accordance with the SI system, all specified
values are increased 2% from those under the previous corresponding value method. The designation of
pressure remains the same as before.

3. Outline and contents of the standard This standard specifies the shape and installation dimensions
of components of water gauges for marine boilers. It is compiled to include water gauge bodies specified in
JIS B 8213 (Boilers – Reflex type water gauges) and JIS B 8215 (Boilers – Transparent type water gauges) for
the convenience of users, in addition to cocks and valves for water gauges.
(1) For a cock plug, an asbestos laminate product without taper and with a metal reinforcement ring used for
a sleeve packing is used. It has the structure that packing tightness can be adjusted by operating a
tightening nut from below.
(2) Among materials in Attached Figure 2 (text), the standard for part number ○ 25 sleeve packing and ○ 26

packing is JIS F 7102 (Shipbuilding-Piping system in machinery space-Application standard for gaskets
and packing). Their shapes and dimensions are as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 (explanatory note) below.

(3) The cock body is separated from the gauge holder to facilitate its removal.
(4) It is difficult to provide the steel balls for blockage at the upper cock structure of water gauges.
According to the results of a user questionnaire, there are many opinions that they may only be provided
at the lower cock structure, and this standard follows them.
(5) The handles shall be a 90° full-open lever type, and both cocks can be opened and closed individually
and easily operated from below.
Remark The caliber of all cocks shall be 10mm including the drain cock. ASME specifies the caliber to be
1/2″ PIPE SIZE. Studies are done on the possibility of adopting this value. However 1/2″ PIPE
SIZE means the actual caliber of 16.1mm, leading to a very large entire structure including the cocks.
10mm is therefore adopted here.
