10. Calculate the density of silver which crystallizes in (2)


a face-centred cubic structure. The distance between
the nearest silver atoms in this structure is 287pm.

density of ethylene glycol. (Kf for water =
1.86 K Kg mol-1)

20. A cell contains two hydrogen electrodes. The negative (3)


electrode is in contact with a solution of 10-6 M
hydrogen ions. The EMF of the cell is 0.118V at 250C.
Calculate the pH of the solution at the positive
electrode.

28. a) The activation energy of a reaction is (5)

a) In the Arrhenius equation for a certain


reaction, the value of A and Ea are 4 X 1013 and
98.6KJ mol-1 respectively. If the reaction is of
first order, at what temperature will its half-
life period be ten minutes?

b) Can a bimolecular reaction ever be a first order


reaction? State the condition under which it is
possible.
29. a) Arrange the following according to the increasing
order of the property mentioned against each.
(i) HF, HCl, HBr, HI (acid strength)
(ii) NH3, PH3, AsH3, SbH3, BiH3 (boiling point)
(iii) F2, Cl2, Br2, I2 (bond dissociation enthalpy)

b)Draw the structures of the following molecules.

a) Assign suitable reasons for each of the
following observations.
(i)In group 15, the bond angle H-M-H decreases in the
order NH3 > PH3 > AsH3 .
(ii) SCl6 is not known, but SF6 is known.
(iii)Hydrogen fluoride is a much weaker acid than HCl
in aqueous solution.

b) Draw the structures of the following molecules.


(i)Perchloric acid
(ii)Sulphur tetrafluoride.
30. a) A compound A with molecular formula C5H10O gave a (5)
positive 2,4-DNP test, but a negative Tollen’s test.
It was oxidized to carboxylic acid B with molecular
formula C3H6O2 when treated with acidic KMnO4 under
vigorous conditions. Sodium salt of b gave a
hydrocarbon C in Kolbe’s electrolytic reduction.
Identify A, B and C and write the chemical equations
for the reactions.

b) Write chemical test to distinguish between,


(i) Phenol and benzoic acid.
(ii) Acetophenone and benzophenone.

a) Account for the following:
(i)Aldehydes and ketones have high dipole moment.
(ii)Oxidation of toluene with CrO3 to benzaldehyde is
carried out in the presence of acetic anhydride.
(iii)Aldehydes are more reactive than ketones in
nucleophilic addition reactions.
b)Give simple chemical tests to distinguish between
the following:
(i) Benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
(ii)Propanone and propanoic acid.
