5 TECHNICAL DISCRIPTION QCX/ROBOLABTM
A QCX/RoboLab from FLSmidth consists of the QCX/RoboLabTM software, a PLC
incl. I/O’s, either an industrial robot or various automated manipulators, sample
conveyers and various sample preparation, storage and analysis equipment.
Often automatic sample loader(s), conveyor belt(s) and XRF/XRD instrument(s)
are included.

Functionality
A QCX/RoboLabTM system is a fully automatic sample preparation set-up.
It can be in a circular flexible layout with a central robot, or in a more fixed linear
setup. The incoming samples may be automatically sampled and sent via a
pneumatic system (QCX/AutoSampling) to the RoboLab system. Those samples
not arriving with pneumatic transport system can be entered into the
QCX/RoboLabTM system manually by placing sample cups in a sample input rack or
on conveyers.
Each sample has an attached sample preparation recipe. This recipe decides the
samples way through the automated system. The sample portions for X-ray
analysis is dosed, fine ground, pressed or fused and analyzed without any human
interference. For other analyzes a second sample portion is dosed and presented
to the analyzer. All sample tracking, preparation data as well as analytical data is
stored in the QCX software.

Engineering services
A typical project scope of supply includes inspections/factory acceptance test of
major equipment components at own and/or manufacturers workshop
The QCX® PC system is supplied configured with the basic QCX/ManagerTM module
and other applicable QCX® software modules, communication drivers for the
relevant analytical & sample preparation equipment and the relevant process I/O
communication driver; and tested prior to delivery, ready for installation and on-
site configuration of key parameters.

System structure – Robot configuration

The advantages of handling all sample preparation in the circular robot cell are
several. First of all the flexibility of the sample preparation is an important issue.
If sample preparation requirements change over time or if a new type of analysis,
such as particle sizing or blaine, is considered, it is possible to revise procedures,
replace or add equipment with limited installation and commissioning costs. In this
way the robot approach is flexible and thereby better suited for the future than
conventional automation (linear layout).

Circular layout

Design and lay-out of the sample prep cell room

The exact layout may vary from plant to plant, however a typical QCX/RoboLab
circular cell requires approximately 6.5*6.5 m.
The robot requires a concrete floor or a concrete island, and for the rest of the
equipment we normally recommend a double floor in order to ‘hide’ cables, and
hoses etc.
The more sensitive equipment such as computer equipment and X-ray
spectrometer we recommend to place in an adjoining room, and normally it is
from this room that operation supervision takes place.
The above dimensions are inclusive reasonable space for easy access and
maintenance. In addition to the preparation room and analysis room, support
equipment like dedusting equipment (noisy) and blower(s) for the pneumatic
sample transport system should be placed in the building. It is often seen that
support equipment like this can be placed in a basement level or other unmanned
localities. Once the equipment selection has come to a finalization, we shall be
pleased to work out de-tailed layout drawings with exact measures.

The project specific equipment scope of supply may include high precision
balances integrated in the units (example: high precision dosing for the XRF fusion
method). Such high precision balances are sensitive to vibrations. The installation
instruction provided from balance supplier/FLSmidth will describe adequate
installation requirements to eliminate the effect from ‘normal’ vibration levels in a
laboratory environment. Excessive vibration levels affecting the lab building
structure (example: vibrations from vertical mills) may require additional, non-
standard installation precautions. FLSmidth expects to be informed beforehand if
conditions with excessive vibration levels prevail at the intended installation
location.

Maintenance
Based on experiences from the many installations worldwide it is our advice that
the proposed automatic system configurations will require approximately 20-40
minutes maintenance per 24 hour. This maintenance implies mostly manual
cleaning of the equipment. In addition to the daily maintenance there will be a
weekly maintenance checklist for various auxiliary equipment and some of the
components of the automatic sample transport system if such exists. Further to
the daily/weekly maintenance, we recommend to have semi-annual /annual
overhauls of the major equipment units, possibly as part of a service contracts
entered with FLSmidth.

Supply requirements
Typical requirements are power: 3x440V and compressed air: 6 bar, dry and oil-
free. It is advisable to connect the QCX PC, the PLC and the X-ray equipment to
an UPS.

Project specific design basis

As part of the system design phase a project specific document will outline the
type of samples to be processed, overall sample throughput capacity as well as
the capacity for each piece of preparation and analytical equipment in the QCX
configuration. As regards the sample material handled by a QCX/RoboLabTM
system, the following general condition applies:
• The quoted QCX/RoboLabTM equipment scope is designed to handle dry (=
max 0.5 % H2O), none-sticky, none-hygroscopic materials such as powder
or granular materials from the cement production process or other mineral
processing plants. If any of the sample materials to be processed contain
moisture, and/or possess sticky or hygroscopic properties, then FLSmidth’s
responsibility for correct processing of these samples is subject to
FLSmidth's prior written confirmation of such responsibility.
• Coal meal can be sampled and transported automatically, but due to the
behaviour of coal meal it is recommended to have a manual sample
receiving station in the laboratory, and then enter the samples manually
into an automated lab – this reduces possible cross contamination from the
coal. If other materials with other characteristics than the ones above are
to be handled, their intended use in the automatic preparation system shall
be informed to FLSmidth beforehand, and FLSmidth reserves the right to
specify that some or all of such sample types cannot be part of the
guaranteed operational performance specifications. As a guideline,
materials like clay, silica sand, fly ash and pure ESP dust may likely show
preparation problems, and normally it is recommended not to introduce
them into the same automatic equipment that handles the production
materials.

5.1.2 CENTAURUS V2
The CENTAURUS V2 combined laboratory mill and press is intended for automated
production of sample material pellets from cement, ore, slag, soil samples,

minerals, raw meal and clinker for subsequent sample analysis with analytical
equipment.
The Centaurus is controlled and monitored from the front panel or from a central
PC if the unit is part of an automated laboratory configuration. Internal sample
transport is carried out by a linear axis with a gripper.
The Centaurus offers the following main features:
Reducing sample to sample contamination – this is done through
dosing the inserted sample material into flush milling and main milling
batches
Grinding aid addition - addition of the required number of grinding aid
tablets by the tablet distributor,
Automation inside - handling the sample cups and the steel ring within
the machine by the linear axis with a gripper,
Grinding - grinding the sample material in the mill,
Grinding only option - transferring the ground sample material to output
position in a sample cup,
Pressing only option - pressing externally ground sample material into
the steel ring in the press by the cup turner,
Cleaning - cleaning the sample pellet in the blow-off device,
Cleaning - cleaning the steel ring and storing it in the ring magazine
Vacuum check - all pressed pellets are checked for integrity
Operator side - cup/ring in/out feed for manual operation
Automation side - cup/ring in/out feed to automation system
