Club News
From the editor
Welcome to the September newsletter.
This newsletter contains a number of reports from
office holders to be delivered at the Annual General
Meeting on 5 September. There are also several walk
write-ups thanks to a great solo effort by Patricia.
Since the last newsletter some of our members have
flown a 34,000km return trip to England to walk the
310km Coast to Coast track between St Bees and
Robin Hood's Bay. The walk includes the Lake District
and the Yorkshire Dales. In 2004 it was rated the
second best walk in the world by a panel of experts. Do
our walkers agree with that assessment?? Posts from
their walk can be seen on Facebook and with luck we
may have an article on it in a future newsletter.
Meanwhile at a much more modest level I've been on a
6000km road trip to Far North Qld that included about
90kms of walks in various National Parks and nature
reserves. The main purpose of the trip was to walk the
Thorsborne Trail with Sandy T and this was achieved.
However an additional item on my bucket list to walk
to the summit of Mt Bartle Frere was not accomplished.
There's always next time!

Work to fix 3 critical sites on the road to Green
Mountains (O'Reilly's) will be undertaken between now
October 2017

 Past Walks
Wilson’s Peak D/W Sunday 13 August 2017
While this walk was rated as M T5 F4 the fitness level
may have distracted some people from noticing the
terrain rating indicated it would contain some
scrambling.
However, I concede that it also included a little
scrambling using hands which is more a T6. Anyway,
everyone did their best and all but one made it right to
the top.

The first scramble where the track leaves the fence for
a short distance has been eroded and the first few
metres up are very slippery. Higher up there are plenty
of roots and shrubs to hang onto.
The cliff break to be negotiated near the top of the
mountain has plenty of handholds and only in a couple
of places made me wish I was somewhere else.
From the top we had views through the trees north
towards Moogerah Dam. Three wedge-tail eagles
glided above us as we ate lunch.

Coomera Circuit D/W Sunday 20 August 2017
Although this walk was listed on the calendar it ended
up being a private walk. This area is too lovely to miss
any opportunity to walk there.
It was more like August weather with strong, cold
westerly winds. Jackets were on most of the day
especially down on the western slopes in the morning
and walking up the creek in the shade. There was
some sun but little warmth in it.
A tree fall on the narrow exposed ledge down into the
creek was a bit of a concern. Care had to be taken not
to assume there was something solid under the leaves
of the fallen tree top. We managed OK and so did quite
a few others we met along the track. The rangers are
hoping to clear it during the week.

Because of the chill in the air we made good time and
were at the final cascades for an early lunch.

The walk back to the cars in the early afternoon was
very pleasant with the sun filtering through the trees
and the track wandering through the forest.

Mt Tamborine Tuesday walk
Lovely walking weather though a little warm for August
saw us heading off around the Jenyn’s Circuit at Palm
Grove National Park up on Mt Tamborine. This was a
fairly short but very pleasant walk through a palm
forest, some rainforest, and then opening up to light
sclerophyll forest.
The path was a bit rocky in parts and Lynn N. was too
careful checking where her feet were and nearly
knocked herself out on an overhanging branch. Her
recovery was swift and, after a short morning tea, we
continued on.
Next we headed to the even smaller National Park of
The Knoll. Here we did a circuit walk to Camerons
Falls and Lookout. Smokey views down across the
south west thanks to all the burnoffs being done at this
time of year.
We had lunch in the shelter shed near the lookout
before driving the short distance to the Cafe for coffee
and cake. No one was interested in another walk to
Witches Falls so we headed off down the mountain for
an early return home.

wander.

Annual Reports

QBW Club Presidents Report on the 2016 / 2017 club year.

A variable year in many different ways.
Our members shared in Pilgrimage 2016 at the Samford Valley Scouts Recreation ground shortly
after the commencement of this past club year. Maybe not many members attended but a good
social event was celebrated.

Bigriggen was the fall-back venue for our 2016 Christmas party as we tried to rein in spending for
the 22 people who attended, but the Masquerade party and secret Santa were definite highlights.

Throughout this past year the Interior areas of Northern NSW, areas of Tasmania and New
Zealand, South America, Southern USA have all been destination for club members wanting to
expand their walking horizons. Our links with Redland Bushwalking are evident here too.

Very early interest was garnered by YHA bushwalkers over their intention to run a splendid
pilgrimage at Killarney. Present indications are that next week’s 2017 pilgrimage will be superb.
Please support it if you are available.

Marion and I represented the club as well as Marion’s family at the February Stinson Park 80 th
Anniversary of the plane crash and subsequent rescue event where with about 150 people we
listened to stories retold by Buchanans, O’Reillys and 100 year old Mrs Arthy.

Bi-monthly walks planning meetings have been effective in drumming up support for more walk
leaders. Hopefully if you want variety in leaders and the walks offered, you will provide some input
too.

A discovery that some of us have limited idea of what is included in club bylaws and constitution led
to an extensive review and rewrite of these rules, taking many months more than we originally
would have thought. Particular mention needs to be made of Patricia Kolarski’s efforts in re-writing
and updating these for us.

As I pass the baton on to someone else can I encourage all the members to get out of your comfort
zone and make some effort to be more involved in the club?
The rest of 2017 will be as good for you as the effort you put in.

Social Secretary Report for Annual General Meeting 5 September 2017

Social outings enable those in the club to interact with other club members who they may or may
not know very well or for members who no longer attend walks but still enjoy the company.
Thank you to those who attended the few social outings throughout the year.

We have walked the bay from the pool at Wynnum to an Italian restaurant at Manly. We have
walked the river from the Cultural Centre to West End to a Chinese restaurant. And the last event
was a walk around the wetlands at Boondall and finishing in a cafe at Nudgee Beach.

The social secretary also helps out at the Christmas party. Last year, we held a very enjoyable
party at Biggriggen. We did a walk on the Saturday and for some, a bike ride on the Sunday.
Thank you to those who supported the events.

Unfortunately owing to other commitments, I was only able to organise a few outings this year.

QBW Editor's Report 2016-2017

11 editions of the QBW newsletter were published in 2016-17. It's been a pleasure to receive the
many interesting and imaginative walk reports that several members have taken the time to write.
Feedback is positive that the broader membership enjoys these write ups and photos.
This year we began trialling a Facebook page. There are some teething issues, but it is progressing
and looking good. The newsletter, website and Facebook presence lets people around the world
see what we are doing in QBW. So they are ways of advertising to potential members. Thank you
to those who contribute to them. Your ongoing support is encouraging.
Members have made suggestions for improvement in all facets of our media. This input is welcome
and is helpful to make the information in the newsletter and online valuable to members. This
information should support and improve the competency, safety and walking opportunities for
members whilst being entertaining and enhancing the culture of the club. This has been my aim for
the last year.
