3.2.4 Power Supply Subsystem

The power supply subsystem consists of the PSU, DPMU, and storage batteries. It performs
the following functions:
Converting the external power input into –48 V DC power.
Providing –48 V DC power for the entire BTS3012AE.
Charging and discharging the storage batteries.
Table 3-5 lists the boards of the power supply subsystem and their functions.

PSU Converts the external power into –48 V DC, and then supply the –48 V DC
power for each BTS3012AE module.
Storage Supplies power for the BTS3012AE when the external power supply fails.
batteries

3.2.5 Monitoring Subsystem

The functions of the monitoring subsystem are as follows:
Managing and monitoring the internal environment of the cabinet, the power supply
system, and the charging and discharging of the storage batteries. Reporting the
monitoring results to the DTMU.
Collecting the environment parameters such as the temperature, humidity, smoke, and
water immersion sent from the sensors, and then reports the result to the DTMU. The
DTMU processes the reported results and then sends the results to the OMC.
Keeping the BTS3102AE in a proper temperature. The heat exchanger heats the
BTS3012AE and the fans dissipate the heat for the BTS3012AE. When the temperature
exceeds the threshold, the system generates alarms.

3.3 System Configuration

The system configuration is as follows:
A single BTS3012AE cabinet under full configuration has a maximum of 12 TRXs, that
is, 6 DTRUs.
The BTS3012AE can form, with other types of BTSs, a combined cabinet or cabinet

5.1.2 Terminal Maintenance

As shown in Figure 5-1, terminal maintenance is implemented through a PC. The PC is
connected to the BTS3012AE through an Ethernet cable.
You can operate and maintain sites, cells, and TRXs through the terminal maintenance.

5.1.3 Remote Maintenance

As shown in Figure 5-1, remote maintenance is implemented through a PC. The PC forms a
network with the OMC, BSC, and BTS.
The remote maintenance uses Graphic User Interface (GUI) and topological view. You can see
the name, type, location, number, and running status of each NE through the GUI interface.
You can view the detailed performance data, alarm data, and configuration data of an NE.
You can also operate or maintain an NE through the topological view.

5.2 O&M Functions

The BTS3012AE O&M system provides powerful O&M functions, which includes:
 Security Management
 Alarm Management
 Data Configuration
 Maintenance Management

5.2.1 Security Management

The BTS3012AE authorizes maintenance engineers with hierarchical operation rights to
ensure the security. At the same time, it prompts the possible outcome of dangerous
operations.

5.2.2 Alarm Management

The alarm management function of the BTS3012AE can detect and report equipment faults
and abnormal functioning in a real time manner.
With this function, the BTS3012AE can collect, clear, query, handle, save, explain, prompt,
filter, and analyze alarms.
In addition, the online help and layered alarm filtering function help you to quickly locate
faults and provide fault recovery methods.

5.2.3 Data Configuration

The O&M subsystem of the BTS3012AE allows addition, deletion, modification, and
consistency check of the BTS data. It supports both dynamic and static data configurations.

5.2.4 Maintenance Management

The O&M subsystem of the BTS3012AE provides the following maintenance functions:
Downloading software to boards or modules, or starting and initializing boards or
modules.
Recording the interface tracing messages and running status of the BTS through logs.
 Implementing in-position tests for boards.
Testing the Abis link of the DTRU, testing channels, and self checking the site, cell,
carrier, and board.
Providing backup management for the active/standby DTMU.

About This Chapter

The following table lists the contents of this chapter.

HUAWEI BTS3012AE Base Station
6 Reliability System Description

6.1 System Reliability

The BTS3012AE is designed after overall analysis on system reliability. The BTS3012AE
uses the following methods to enhance the system reliability:
 Active/standby mode
 Load sharing
 Redundant configuration
Optimized fault detection of boards and system
 Optimized fault isolation

Redundancy Design
The BTS3012AE uses the redundancy design. The key clock bus, control bus, data bus, and
DTMU modules use the 1+1 backup mode. The transceivers mutual aid is also supported.

System Monitoring
The BTS3012AE can automatically detect and diagnose faults in the hardware or software
and report them through alarms. It can also detect environmental status and report
abnormalities in time.

6.2 Hardware Reliability

The BTS3012AE adopts the following methods to enhance hardware reliability:
 Prevention against Mistakenly Inserted Boards
 Redundancy Design of Fan Box
Protection against Excessive Rise in Temperature of the DTRU
 Reliability Design for Power Supply

Prevention against Mistakenly Inserted Boards

When a functional board is inserted into a wrong slot, it cannot get into full contact with the
backplane. This prevents the equipment from being damaged.

Redundancy Design of Fan Box

The fan uses N+1 redundancy backup mode. If a fan is faulty, the other fans run at full speed.
Under normal temperature, this design can meet the heat dissipation requirement.

Protection against Excessive Rise in Temperature of the DTRU

When the temperature around the last level power amplifier is too high, the power amplifier
reports the excessive rise in temperature through an alarm, and then enters into the automatic
protection state.

HUAWEI BTS3012AE Base Station
System Description 6 Reliability

Reliability Design for Power Supply

The power supply system of the BTS3012AE has the following features in terms of reliability
design:
The power supply system has the power environment monitoring system, which
performs the following functions:
− Monitoring the power distribution of the AC/DC
− Managing the charging and discharging of the storage batteries
− Monitoring the cabinet environment
− Monitoring the storage battery cabinet environment
− Monitoring the extension cabinet environment
− Monitoring the input and output of extended alarms
When the external power supply fails, the internal storage batteries of the BTS3012AE
can supply power for several hours. An alarm about the failure of the external power
supply is sent to the OMC to prompt for proper handling.
The BTS3012AE uses a distributed power supply. The DC/DC power modules operate in
N+1 redundancy mode. When a module fails, an alarm is sent to the OMC. You can
easily replace the faulty module because the DC/DC is hot swappable.
The power supply has a lightning protection function and a protection function against
voltage variation.
The BTS3012AE provides power failure protection for programs and data.
The boards of the BTS3012AE provide protection against excessive voltage and current.
The boards of the BTS3012AE provide protection against reverse-polarity connection.

6.3 Software Reliability

Software reliability is reflected in the powerful capability of error tolerance. The entire system
will not get corrupted when the software fails. That is, the system has self-healing capability.
Error tolerance of the BTS3012AE is shown in the following aspects.

Regular Check on Key Resources

Seizure check is conducted on various software resources in the system. The check
mechanism can ensure the release of suspended resources and the output of the related logs
and alarms.

Task Monitoring
When the software is active, the task monitoring function can monitor any possible fault in
the software or hardware. In addition, detected faults can be reported. Task status and system
abnormalities can also be monitored.

Data Check
The system can perform regular or event-driven checks on data consistency, restore the data
consistency selectively or preferably, and output related logs and alarms.

6 Reliability System Description

Saving Operation Log Information

The system records user operations within a certain period and saves the recorded information
to the system operation logs. Operation logs can be used to locate errors or exceptions
because of incorrect operations so that the system can be restored to the normal state.
