Friends,

VBS Sunday was wonderful.  Our  sanctuary  was  packed  and  the  VBS  children
brought  with  them  their  joy  and  energy.  I  am  so  grateful  for  the  welcome  you  gave  to  our
VBS  family  and  to  all  of  you  who  made  the  week  such  a  success:  Sue  Reaveley,  director
extraordinaire,  decorators,  registrars,  tribe  leaders  and  helpers,  shopkeepers,  Daniel
(Matthew  Venter)  and  Ashpenaz  (Maynard  Embree),  the  Palace  Games  masters,
(Savannah  McIntyre,  Tatiana  Villacorta  and  Marcus  Villacorta),  the  many  people  who  set
up  and  took  down  the  marketplace  and  the  sanctuary  décor  and  of  course,  the  team  that
Rev.  Paddy  Eastwood        prepared  that  delicious  BBQ  lunch.  Thank  you!  VBS  truly  is  an  effort  of  our  whole  church
                         family.

In  the  skit  for  Day  Five,  Daniel  had  a  decree  from  the  king  in  his  hand.  This  decree  from  King  Darius
said:  “Daniel’s God is great! Therefore, every person in my kingdom must fear and have reverence for
the God of Daniel.”  (Daniel  6.25-‐27:  see  also  Daniel  2.47  and  Daniel  4.  31-‐34).

This  is  truly  amazing:    a  foreign  king  praises  God.
This  is  virtually  unheard  of  and  yet,  three  times  in  the
book  of  Daniel,  this  is  exactly  what  happens:  the  king  of
the  mightiest  empire  of  the  day  and  a  follower  of  a  god
other  than  Yahweh  sings  a  song  of  faith  and  praise  to  the
God  who  saved  Daniel  from  the  power  of  the  lions.  God
was  at  work  in  the  life  of  King  Darius.

Even though our VBS has ended, we should
remember Darius’ confession.    Who  knows  what  God  is
doing  in  the  lives  of  our  VBS  children?  Who  knows  how

the  Holy  Spirit  will  blow  through  their  lives?  We  have
given  one  week  to  these  children,  trusting  in  the  God  who  opened  the  eyes  of  the  king  of  Babylon.  We  have
shared  the  gospel  with  these  children,  trusting  that  God  will  open  their  eyes.  We  have  invited  them  on  a  faith
journey.  We  have  welcomed  the  children  and  their  parents  into  our  community.

Going forward, please keep our VBS
families in your prayers. Pray that the truth
they have heard this week will bear fruit.

  In  Christian  hope,

Paddy

INVITATION TO SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Spiritual  direction  is  a  strange  concept  for  many  of  us.  The  idea  of
meeting  with  another  person  to  talk  about  our  lives  in  a  context  of
prayerful  listening  may  even  sound  intimidating.  This  is  how  it  was  for
me  when  I  first  began  to  work  with  a  spiritual  director  many  years
ago.  But  it  soon  became  one  of  most  meaningful  and  transformative
things  that  I  have  done  in  life.

Spiritual  direction  is  not  as  directive  as  it  sounds.  It  is  not  therapy.  It  is
not  about  fixing  or  problem-solving.  And  it  is  not  about  advice-giving.
Rev.  Dr.  Gerard  Booy                It  is  simply  a  relationship  in  which  we  listen  together  to  discern  where
God  is  present,  to  hear  the  voice  of  Jesus,  and  to  pay  attention  to  the
movements  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  our  lives.  We  notice  the  direction  of  our  lives  and  the  deep
longings  of  our  souls.  We  listen  for  the  invitations  God  may  have  for  us  at  any  particular  time.
We  attend  to  this  so  that  we  can  fully  be  whom  God  has  called  each  one  of  us  to  be.

In  spiritual  direction  you  may  pay  attention  to  growing  in  your  relationship  with  God,  issues  of
discernment  for  you,  relationships  with  others,  discovering  and  embracing  the  presence  of
God  in  the  ordinary,  learning  how  to  pray,  obstacles  to  growth,  and  intimacy  with  God  and
others,  living  a  life  of  greater  justice  and  compassion…

As  you  consider  this  invitation,  please  feel  free  to  contact  Gerard  Booy  for  more  information
or  to  schedule  a  first  exploratory  meeting  (in  person,  by  phone,  or  online).

Berney and his older sons set about rebuilding a
