The Indians of Great Lakes found many uses for the weeds and
wildflowers of the region, such as food, medicine, and dyes. Plants provided
edible berries and seeds among them being the cranberry and the wild of lily
of the valley, especially sunflower seeds, which making a ground-up meal,
when boiled was used in cooking by the Hurons as a hair dressing. Bulbs of

plants, wild iris, hepatica and the cardinal flower, for example. Indians made
a red dye from pokeweed, sometimes called inkberry, using the dye to stamp
designs on baskets. Yellow dye was made from goldenrod, a weed growing
profusely on rocky banks, and on the sand dunes of the Great Lakes. Other
plants were useful as articles of trade or as charms, cranberries and
columbine seeds having value in intertribal commerce. The columbine and
cardinal flower being prized as love charms. The wild lotus was thought to
have mystic powers, and some tribes keeping it to protect against evil spirits.

Since 1965, Mexicans of all ages have enjoyed a comic book called
Kaliman El hombre incredible (The incredible man). Kaliman is handsome,
powerful, and super-hero. Kaliman, whose native country is unspecified,
became an orphan while a young boy. Afterward, he was educated by Lamas
in Tibet, but his adventures are not confined to Asia, in fact, he roams the
universe crusading for justice. His adversaries are plunderers, mad scientist,
vampires and various other villians. They commit outrageous crimes against
the innocent and oppressed, and at times, they plot to destroy Kaliman
himself by using poison or deadly weapons. The victim, whom he defends
often, has a beautiful daughter who falls in love with Kaliman; nevertheless
he always treats women as innocent persons who should never be hurt or
dishonored occasionally; however, his life is threatened by an exotic
villainess with magic powers. Kaliman is not a typical comic book hero
defeating injustice with his physical strength or ability to dodge bullets and
leap from mountains; instead, he depends mainly on his remarkable powers
of mind and great learning to outwit his enemies. He never tries to kill a
villain in the most desperate circumstances. He uses a blowgun whose darts
induce sleep for several hours.
