COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Annual Report
2009-10

Rayat & Bahra College of Education was established in June 2005 under aegis of
Rayat-Bahra Group at Sahauran campus. Presently, 43 acre Campus is shared by
seven institutes and a school with senior secondary classes. Affiliated to Punjabi
University, Patiala and approved by NCTE, the College offers two courses – B.Ed.
with a total intake of 200 seats (since 2008) and M.Ed. with an intake of 25 seats
(since 2008). The institute unfolds, develops and utilizes students' potential to
groom teachers and teacher educators of tomorrow, who are committed, competent
and compassionate citizens.

INAUGURATION OF SESSION
We began our session with the orientation of the students on the auspicious
occasion of ID-ul-Fitr on 21 st September, 2009. To prepare the students for the
forthcoming session, one week orientation program was organized from 21 st to 26th
September, 2009 in which students were acquainted with the course curriculum,
system of internal assessment and the nature of work they would be required to do
throughout the session. Dr. Satinder Dhillon, member of CTE, Mrs. Sarita Manuja,
Director Training and Placement and Mr. Paramvir Singh, Director NSS
Department, Punjabi University, Patiala also delivered lectures.

INNOVATIONS
Weekend Courses
Recognizing the importance of changing global trends and their effects on teacher
education, specialized weekend courses have been introduced to meet the emerging
needs of prospective teachers as well as the world of work which awaits them.
Following courses were offered to the students:

 LIFE (Learning in Informal and Formal Environment): Exploring HOTS (Higher


Order Thinking Skills as prescribed by CBSE) through innovation and alternative
ideas in education.
 Creating Inclusive Classrooms: An introduction to learning disabilities by Ms.
Ruchika Sachdeva from Lakshaya Centre, Gurgaon.
 Jagriti: Spirit of Volunteerism. 11 of our B.Ed. students taught at Sarva
Shiksha Abhiyan Centers run by Bharat Prakash Foundation, Chandigarh on
Saturdays.
 Samavesh: Community Work. Under the leadership of Mrs. Supreet and Mrs.
Sharanjeet Kaur our students interact with the inmates of Home of Helpless
Mentally/Physically Disabled, Orphan and Unclaimed Missing Destitute,
Universal Disabled Care-Taker Social Welfare Society, Padiala. Mrs. Sharanjeet
Kaur along with 3 students teaches yoga to the inmates.

Among the Courses Common to all students were:


 Walking the Talk: Personality Development and Communication Skill
programme.
 Using Computers in Teaching-Learning: Introductory course in Computers

CHRYSALIS
The college also has Chrysalis, a three-tier mentorship program, which is one of the
best practices of our institute. It is operational for B.Ed and M.Ed. Students.
 MMP (Master Mentorship Programme): One prospective teacher educator
mentors eight prospective teachers with the same educational background in
all the aspects.
 BMP (Bachelor’s Mentorship Programme): Prospective teachers with science
and maths as teaching subjects mentor two students from the RBIEBT-School
Wing (+2 Non-Medical)
 PIP (Peer-in-Partnership): Computer literate students assist computer
Beginners students in B.Ed.

INFRASTRUCTURE ADDED
Apart from the available infrastructure we added Mathematics Resource Centre,
Social science resource centre, Music room, Physical Education room, Information
and Communication Technology Resource Centre.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP CELL
An Entrepreneurship Cell was established by the group to financially aid the passing
out students to start their own enterprise.

RAYAT-BAHRA ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES


As the campus is expanding and so are the ventures of the group, we feel proud to
proclaim that preference shall be given to the pass outs of Rayat-Bahra Group in
matters of employment.
ACADEMIC JOURNAL
RBCE, Mohali took the initiative to start an Academic Journal in November, 2009
pertaining to the field of education. It is meant for carrying research papers,
journals, articles and book – reviews

CULTURAL AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

INTER ZONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL (March 16 -17, 2010)


Rayat and Bahra College of Education, Mohali organized Inter Zonal Youth Festival
on 16-17 March, 2010 in association with self-financed Colleges of Education,
affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala. Dr. M. S. Mann, Prof. & Head SGTB
National Integration Chair, Punjabi University, Patiala was the Chief Guest in the
inaugural function on March 16, 2010. The Hon’ble guests present at the function
were S. Nirmal Singh Rayat, S. Gurwinder Singh Bahra, Prof. Keshav Sharma, Prof.
K. K. Uppal, Dr. (Mrs) Satinder Dhillon, Dr. (Mrs) Indu Rihani and 10 Principals from
various educational colleges. There were 37 events, 100 teachers, 30 teams, 25
judges and 462 participants from 40 colleges in the event.

ZONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL (October 21-23, 2009)


In all 48 students participated in Zonal Youth Festival held from 21 st to 23rd
October, 2009 held at Rayat and Bahra College of Law, Mohali. Our students
participated in 21 items out of 30 and won 13 prizes in various items.

ZONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL OF FOLK ITEMS (February 26-27, 2010)


17 Students along with 2 faculty members of Rayat-Bahra College of Education took
part in various events of Zonal Youth Festival of Folk arts of Punjab on 26th and
27th February 2010 conducted by Punjabi University, Patiala.

INTER COLLEGE B - DIVISION ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP OF B.ED.


COLLEGES OF PUNJABI UNIVERSITY, PATIALA
The First Athletics Championship of B.Ed colleges of Punjabi University, Patiala
organized by the sports department of the university begin at Raja Bhalendra Singh
Sports Complex under the championship of Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma sports director
at 26-03-10 & 27-03-10.
In the women section, RBCE, Mohali bagged second position in overall
championship. From RBCE Mohali 16 students participated and they grabbed
 5 – Gold medals
 3 – Silver medals
 3 – Bronze medals
INTER COLLEGE COMPETITIONS (March 25, 2010)
Rayat & Bahra College of Education, Mohali organized Inter College Competitions
Mohali on 25 March 2010 on the diverse current themes of HIV/AIDS & Gender
equality in different fields as Quiz (AIDS Awareness & Gender equality),
PowerPoint Presentation (AIDS Awareness & Gender equality), Poster Making (Drug
Addiction), Slogan Writing (Female Foeticide), College Making (Gender Equality), T-
Shirt painting (AIDS Awareness) and Skit (AIDS Awareness/Gender Equality). In
these competitions, 75 participants accompanied by 10 faculty members from 10
institutions took part in different competitions. Dr. Manjit Singh, Dean College
Development Council, Punjabi University Patiala was the Chief Guest on the
occasion. Dr. Neelam Gulati Sharma, Additional Director, PSCST was the guest of
honour in the function. The prizes at the valedictory were given away by our worthy
Chief Guest Dr. Paramvir Singh, Director, NSS – Unit, Punjabi University, Patiala.

INTER HOUSE COMPETITIONS (December 14, 2009)


Inter House Competitions for sports activities were held on 14 th December, 2009 in
Rayat & Bahra College of Education on 14 th Dec.2009. Three houses that
participated were
1. Gandhi House
2. Tagore House
3 Radha Krishna House
The competitions were held for Volley Ball (For Boys), Doze Ball (Combined event
for boys and girls), Badminton (Both for boys and girls). Gandhi House was the
winner in Volleyball and Doze Ball.

COMMUNITY SERVICES
SEVEN DAY NSS CAMP (December 18-24, 2009)
At Rayat & Bahra College of Education, Sahauran, Seven Day NSS camp from 18 th to
24 Dec, 2009 inaugurated with full zeal and enthusiasm in the afternoon. The camp
revolved around the theme on Health, Public Sanitation and personal Hygiene. NSS
camp was inaugurated by our Guest of Honour Mrs. Neena Singh, active Social
Worker of Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan, with the lightning of Deepshikha.

VOLUNTARY SERVICE AT PADIALA (Home for Disadvantaged)


Under the leadership of Mrs. Supreet and Mrs. Sharanjeet Kaur our students
interact with the inmates of Home of Helpless Mentally/Physically Disabled,
Orphan and Unclaimed Missing Destitute, Universal Disabled Care-Taker Social
Welfare Society, Padiala. Mrs. Sharanjeet Kaur along with 3 students teaches
yoga to the inmates.
SEMINAR ON DRUG ADDICTION IN PUNJAB-PREVALENCE AND
PREVENTIVE MEASURES’ (March 19, 2010)
State Level Seminar on ’’Drug Addiction in Punjab Prevalence and Preventive
Measures“ sponsored by ICSSR, North –West Regional centre, Panjab University,
Chandigarh was organized on 19 March 2010 in Rayat & Bahra College of Education,
Mohali. 150 delegates from 15 education colleges including teacher educators and
students from Punjab and Chandigarh attended the seminar.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP (March 11, 2010)


8 students of M.Ed. and B.Ed. donated blood during Blood Donation Camp organised
by Rayat-Bahra Group at Mohali Campus on 11th March, 2010

FACULTY AND STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM


The exchange program was organised at Smt. Jawala Devi College of Education,
Sanghol between faculty members and the students on 22 nd April, 2010. 80
students of Teaching of S. St. accompanied by Mrs. Supreet, Mrs. Shalini Gupta,
Mr. Surinder Singh and Mrs. Manmeet Kaur visited Archaeological Museum at
Sanghol.

FACULTY’S ACHIEVEMENTS
 Dr. (Mrs.) Indu Rihani was appointed Joint Secretary of CTE in 2009
 Prof. Kanwarjit Singh published his Book on ‘Vidyak Khoj Prakriya’, By Arun
Publishing House, Pvt. Ltd. Chandigarh.
 Dr. Navita Mahajan- published Students Hand book on ‘Teaching of English’
 Mrs. Richa – published Book on ‘Education Paper-III’, By Surya Publisher
 Mrs. Jaswinder Kaur attended Five Day Workshop from 7th to 11 th August,
2009 on Folk Art and Folk Games held in Auditorium of Punjabi University,
Patiala.
 Mr. Deputy Raj attended a Refresher course in Education and Community
Services from 9th to 28th November, 2009 at Academic Staff College, Punjabi
University, Patiala.
 Mrs. Sharanjit Kaur attended Three Day National Conference on ‘University
Sports-A’ Spring Board for Olympics which was held from 5 th to 7th December,
2009 at Kala Bhawan, Punjabi University, Patiala organized by Directorate of
Sports, Punjabi University, Patiala.
 In the Inter College skill-in-teaching and on-the-spot teaching aid preparation
Competition at Rayat College of Education, Rail Majra (affiliated to Panjab
University) on 2nd December, 2010. Following staff members acted as judge:

STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS
Our M.Ed. students organized Two Day Seminar to celebrate Technology Day on
13th and 15th May, 2010 on the theme “Role of ICT in Education”.

B.Ed. students
 Daljeet Kaur, our B.Ed. student participated in State level contest organised on
25th October, 2009 at Punjabi Bhawan, near Bharat Nagar Chowk, Ludhiana to
commemorate the 102nd birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
 B.Ed Students got an opportunity to perform the duties in the online CAT Exam
which was conducted from 28th November to 9th December, 2009 for the first
time in the Mohali campus.
 The students of RBCE, Mohali bagged overall trophy in Inter College
Competitions held at S.R.S.M. Mukat College of Education, Rajpura on 9 th
February,2010 with the theme ‘Women Empowerment: Still a Distant Dream’
 Our students grabbed overall trophy in Inter College Competitions organized at
Chandigarh College of Education, Landran on 10th March, 2010 with the theme
‘Exploring New Horizons’.
 The students won overall trophy in Skill in Teaching Competitions conducted at
Smt. Jwala Devi College of Education, Sanghol on 22 March,2010
 Gurwinder Singh, student of B.Ed. “Rayat & Bahra College of Education”, Mohali
Campus attended the ’North-East Youth Festival’ held at kohima, Nagaland and
participated in group dance (Bhangra) and represented ‘Punjab State’ in State
Level exhibition and was awarded certificate of appreciation by Joint
Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and Director General of Nehru
Yuva Kendra Sangathan. He was awarded with certificate of Participation by
chief secretary of Govt of Nagaland.
 Mona Kashyap, B.Ed. student presented paper at State level seminar on “Soil
conservation & Water management at Shivalik Institute of Education &
Research, Mohali on 23rd March 2010 on the Sub theme “water management”.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS
Visits of M.Ed. Students
 Students of M.Ed visited Ropar on 6 December, 2009 for attending Lecture on
CCE, Lecture delivered by Mrs. Bindu Sharma, Principal, Rayat International
School, Railmajra.
 M.Ed. students accompanied by Dr. (Mrs.) Indu Rihani, Dr. Navita Mahajan and
Ms. Sonu Bala visited NITTTR and Employment Exchange on 11 th March, 2010.

Visits of B.Ed. Students


 Students of Population Education and Teaching of Economics visited to slum
areas, Khosla machinery and Cooperative Bank.
 Students of Teaching of Economics and commerce visited to village Jhingra.
 Students of Teaching of Economics and commerce and mathematics visited
to Manav Mangal Smart School, Mohali
 Students of Computer craft visited DOEACC centre, sector 17, Chandigarh.
 Students of Teaching of Science and Home Science visited Verka Milk Plant,
Phase-VI, Mohali on 23rd April, 2010 to acquaint the students with the process
of pasteurization of milk.

Our faculty members actively participated in National and regional level seminars
and workshops throughout the year to enhance their personal and professional
skills. Principal and Faculty attended 37 National and regional level
seminars/workshops.

FACULTY INDUCTION PROGRAM (January 14-15, 2010)


Faculty Induction Program was organized for the faculty of Mohali and Hoshiarpur
College of Education in RBCE, Mohali on14 th and 15th January, 2010 by the expert
Ms. Sona Jones from Hero Mind mine.

TRAINING PROGRAM FOR MINISTERIAL, SECRETARIAL AND


ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF
To equip our administration staff with modern management tools and techniques to
enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, Ms. Rajni Rathaur and Mrs. Ranjit Kaur
attended two training programs on communication Skills (8-10 February 2010) and
Noting and Drafting (8-10 March, 2010).

WORKSHOP ON HOTS (April, 2010)


The workshop on Higher Order Thinking Skills was organised for the faculty
members in 6th, 8th, 10th, 16th and 17th April, 2010. The faculty members were
acquainted with the material that can be used to teach the school students by
activity method as well as using their higher order thinking skills.

ACTIVITIES ORGANISED AT CAMPUS LEVEL


CHANDIGARH MARATHON (January 31, 2010)
Five students along with Mrs. Sharnjeet Kaur, lecturer, RBCE, Mohali, visited Rock
Garden on 31st January, 2010, at 1 pm organised by Chandigarh Administration to
cheer up Mr. Yashvardhan Saboo, who is associated with an NGO named Bharat
Parkash Foundation. These NGO’s work for the upliftment of underprivileged girls.

CHANDIKRIT (February 21, 2010)


On 21st February 2010, about 30 Students of RBCE participated along with the
students of the rest of the campus participated in the cultural function organized
by Department of Industries, U.T. Chandigarh, at Parade Ground Sector-17,
Chandigarh. They presented the items related to ‘Punjabi Virsa’ and acquainted the
audience with different items of Punjabi Culture.
