ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCES AND THEIR ASSESSMENT _ ISO 14031

• Environmental performance - the organization’s management results regarding the

organization’s environmental aspects.
• Environmental performance evaluation (EPE)- process which facilitates management
decisions concerning the organization's environmental performance through: the choice of
indicators, data collection and analysis, the evaluation of informations according to the
environmental performance criteria, reporting and communication, periodic analysis and the
improvement of this process(the model Plan- Do- Check- Act).
• Environmental performance indicator - specific expression that provides informations about
the organization's environmental performance.

INDICATORS IN ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION (EPE)

Environmental performance indicators (EPI)

• Management performance indicators (MPI) – provide information about the management
efforts to influence the environmental performance of the organization’s operations.
• Operation performance indicators (OPI) – provide information about environmental
performance of the organization’s activities.

Environmental condition indicators(ECI) - provide information about the condition of the

environment (it can help the organization to better understand the current or potential impact
of its environmental issues and thus to support the planning and the implementation of EPE).

INDICATORS FUNCTIONS

• Environmental performance evaluation

• Planning
• Explanations  provide information about Stress, Condition and the Responses to
environmental problems
• Information  contributes to the raising of the awareness level

C Carmen Teodosiu_tuiasi www.study.tuiasi.ro www.learning.tuiasi.ro

”Integrated Environmental Management ” – Course Notes

Environmental condition indicators (ECI)

• the concentration of a particular pollutant in the air
• the temperature of the environment in areas located at a distance specified by the Organization
• the average noise levels measured in the perimeter of the Organization
• the concentration of a particular pollutant in the waste water, groundwater or surface
• the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the receiver
• the specific pollutant concentration in the surface soil horizons in certain areas near the usefulness of the
Organization
• the concentration of select nutrients in the soils adjacent of the organization utility
• restoration of land in a given area
• the area of land devoted to agriculture, tourism or floodable from a specific area
• extent of surface soil erosion in a specific area
• life expectancy for certain populations
• the incidence of specific diseases, mainly among sensitive populations of epidemiological studies carried out in local
or regional area
• population growth rate in local or regional area
• the levels of lead in blood for the people of the local area

SELECTING INDICATORS FOR EPE DERIVED FROM A COMMON DATA SET

(STAKEHOLDERS)

An organization that treated waste water discharged into a lake can choose the following indicators for EPE:
the total quantity of the specific contaminant discharged per year
(possible target groups: local community)
the contaminant concentration in the wastewater
(possible target groups: legislative and regulatory authorities)
the amount of contaminant discharged per product manufactured
(possible target groups: management and consumers)
changing the quantity of contaminant discharged per year depending on the investment in clean
technologies or modernization process
(possible target groups: management and investors).

EXAMPLES ILLUSTRATING AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE IDENTIFIED WITH THE

RELATED INDICATORS CHOSEN FOR EPE

An organization that provides services, located in an area where air quality is unsatisfactory , uses air quality
information to choose appropriate indicators for EPE, as the objective of reducing emissions from motor vehicles.
MPI
-amounts spent on promoting public transport use
-the number of training hours for employees to use public transport
-the effectiveness of efforts to reduce fuel consumption, improve
vehicle maintenance and fuel efficiency and use of alternative fuels.
OPI
-The reduction of motor vehicle emissions due to the use of alternative fuels
-The total amount of fuel consumed
-The frequency of the maintenance operations for vehicles
-The number of vehicles equipped with environmental control technologies.
ECI
- the concentrations of air pollutants associated with motor vehicle emissions

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING
Organizations (productive or providing services) are known to the public
information relating to emissions, activities and performances in the environmental
protection and ensure sustainable development.
Advantages:
• Improve company image
• Efficient Management
• Facilitates dialogue with suppliers and customers
• Facilitates the relationships with civil society (feedback)
• Discover the "hot spots" and development opportunities
• Management and marketing tool

THE CONTENT OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT

• Profile of business and organizational scheme;

• Environmental policy that the company applies;
• Environmental management system;
• Compliance with the legislation in force;
• Emissions;
• Efficiency of resource use;
• Environmental impacts of products;
• Costs for treatment / purification of emissions, and
• Relations with the competent authorities.

TYPES OF REPORTS

• Mandatory reports
TRI – Toxic Release Inventory in USA
PRTR – Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers in European countries.
These records include lists of pollutants and hazardous substances classified by the
impact they have on the environment and human health. Any company that produces
substances in these records is required to publish their emissions and the manner in
which they carry out their management
• Voluntary reports - example: annual environmental statements which provide under
EMAS - Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, GRI reports (Global Reporting Initiative)

GRI reporting– Global Reporting Initiative- common coherent scheme of voluntary

reporting of performances / economic impacts, social and environmental impacts of
companies (context DD).

An environmental report under GRI must contain informations about:

• Vision and strategy - a description of organization's strategy on sustainable
development, including a statement of top management;
• Organization Profile - a summary of the organization specific , of activities
• Governance structure and management systems
• GRI Content Index - a table that identifies the place where are located the essential
information (economic, social, environmental) in the report content
• Sustainability Performance indicators include the classical indicators of
sustainability
