Coordinated Movement Experience​: Feel It Still Erin Dixon

1. Understandings Statement:

This experience will engage students in moving different parts of their bodies to different parts in the
music This will encourage students to reflect on musical phrasing that occurs in most well-known
songs. Students will also have opportunities to make up their own movements or dances (improv) to
experiment with their own self expression and creativity.

2. “I can” Statements:

-I can move different parts of my body in time with music to explore musical phrasing.
-I can “groove” or explore improvisation through dance in time with music.

3. Materials:​ “​Feel It Still​” by Portugal. The Man ​from the album ​Woodstock​ (2017).

4.​ ​Detailed Procedure:

-”Groove” for 16 beats


-Shoulder rolls for 16 bests: double coordinated
-Alternating shoulder rolls for 32 measures: double alternated
-Right hand flick for 8 beats: single coordinated
-Left hand flick for 8 beats: single coordinated
-Right hand flick/right leg kick for 8 beats: single alternated
-Left hand flick/left leg kick for 8 beats single alternated
-Alternate right hand flick/left leg kick, left hand flick/right leg kick for 16 beats : complex
-”Groove” or 32 beats
-Hip squares for 16 beats
-Right hand flick/right leg kick for 8 beats: single alternated
-Left hand flick/left leg kick for 8 beats single alternated
-Alternate right hand flick/left leg kick, left hand flick/right leg kick for 16 beats : complex
-”Groove” or 32 beats
5. ​ ​Assessment:​ Informal observation and questioning (formative assessment).

-I will observe the students as they dance along with me while paying attention to pacing especially
in regards to movements.
-I will take note of which students are catching on more quickly/slowly and adjust pacing accordingly.
-I will ask the students how the different movements changed throughout the activity.
-I will ask students what they did and did not like about the improvisational sections or what
specifically they enjoyed about the experience. Then to do the activity a few more times trying
something different each round (as time allows).

6. ​ ​Extension:

-After students have completed the experience a few times to develop what “works for them” they
will have time to discuss these findings with their peers
-Then, in small groups of 3-4 students will choreograph improvisational sections to include
movements from each of their creations
-Students will perform their sequences for each other, then, discuss as a class what was different or
similar for each of the groups
