KASTA

BY REY ALICEA
Kasta is an Old Norse word, meaning to throw away, discard or dispose of.

Kasta is a game for 2 or 4 players.

Kasta is played with 80 - 6 sided 4 color dice arranged into a 10 x 8 pool. You
don't roll the dice in Kasta you discard them, this makes the game play similar to
games like Rummy, Dominoes and Uno the exception being that in Kasta there is
no hidden information.

Contents

80 – 6 sided dice in 4 colors and a rectangular rack

Object

To be the player with the lowest score after 3 rounds.

Game Play

The following are instructions for 2 players.

To start a round place the rectangular rack between the 2 players, then fill the
rack with the 80 dice arranging them until they all fit inside the rack and are lying
flat. Then place the rack aside to be used as the discard pile. You should be left
with a 10 by 8 draw pool of dice. Players then decide who goes first and then the
first player takes a die from anywhere along the periphery of the pool for
himself/herself and then selects 3 dice along the periphery of the pool and slides
them over to their opponent, then the second player does the same as the first.

From this point on play alternates, so on your turn you may do only one of 4
things…

• Take a die from anywhere along the periphery of the pool for yourself and then
select 3 dice along the periphery of the pool and slide them over to your
opponent or

• Discard one of your dies from your hand then take another one from the
periphery of the pool for yourself and select another from the periphery of the
pool to give to your opponent or

• From your hand turn one die over onto any side you wish then take another one
from the periphery of the pool for yourself and select another from the periphery
of the pool to give to your opponent or

• Discard four dice that form a pattern or sequence from your hand to the discard
pile (Note: only one pattern or sequence per turn may be discarded). Also it is
customary in Kasta that a player present the pattern or sequence of dice he or
she are about to discard to the other players.

The patterns and sequences are as follows…

 4 dice with the same color and number

 4 dice with the same color and all different numbers

 4 dice with different colors and the same number

A round ends when the pool is empty and players have taken one last turn
discarding dice, scores are then totaled for the round. To score a round, simply
count the pips in your remaining hand. The player with the lowest score after 3
rounds is declared the winner. If a draw occurs, play another round.

A 4 player game is played the same as a 2 player game; with the exception that
any dice you pass off, you do so to your opponent on your left.
