Ladybug, Inspired by the Illustrations of AKIAKANE

“Ladybug”, as the artist calls it, is one of the latest works by Renee Chico. It was done
on a digital canvas application which also contains different digital brushes and effects. The
work is composed of a mix of curved and gestural lines that form a general diagonal posture
that leans to the left. It mainly uses warm and cool colors to give contrast in the subject. The
position of the head and body as well as its direction makes the subject asymmetrical, as the
majority of the subject’s left side is seen unlike her right. The color scheme uses a black, red,
and purple combination commonly used in comics and some animated media.
Renee took the liberty to add some of her physical features to the subject, especially
her hair. Also, she intentionally added more “pop” and pastel in the color scheme to match
her taste and the AKIAKANE style of illustration, which inspired her chosen art style. She treats
the eyes as her most distinctive feature as it made the biggest difference from the original
iteration of the character’s dark blue eyes.
One of the reasons why the artist made the artwork was to invite the audience to
watch the show where the subject named “Ladybug” is in. She watched the show during her
pastime and has grown fond with it, even so as to making more artworks previously with the
same subject but in different situations. She wants other people to know about the show’s
existence and appreciate it the way she does.
In sum, it is a good artwork; however, it does not clearly show the purpose and
message of the work, but rather wants the audience to have an emotional connection with it
and wonder on where it comes from. Even if the artist aimed to persuade people, the main
purpose was to express her love for the show, which makes it a product of self-expression. It
is successful though in bringing such intrigue in me, which made me search for the show in
YouTube to have a glimpse of Ladybug in action. I usually judge art in its beauty, proper use
of lines, and how it reflects the true emotion of the artist before, during, and after the creation
of the work. The lines and color provide a clear emphasis to its form; the blend of shapes and
colors provide a sense of pleasantness and beauty; and, the art represents what the artist felt
in the course of the process. This means the art was done in a formalist approach, which
emphasizes on the aesthetics in lieu of any political agenda. Nonetheless, I like it very much
and it matches my standards very well.
