editorial

Dear Reader,
In this edition, we are proud to take you once again to
different parts of the world, visiting places, solutions and
technologies. We introduce you to some of our service
operations in Asia, examine the sustainable technologies
used in Wärtsilä seals, and also reveal how we can look
into the future.

At the request of our customers and partners and to

serve you better, we launched a new magazine called in
detail in June of this year. Complementing Twentyfour7.,
which monitors industries and corporate developments
from a business perspective, in detail focuses on technical
aspects to provide deeper insight into the solutions,
products and services that Wärtsilä provides.

Through these two magazines we want to share our

desire to make things work. During the autumn of 2007,
we will be conducting a reader survey to collect your
opinions about Twentyfour7. and its content.

Wärtsilä’s products and solutions are flexible

in terms of the fuels they use and also in the scope of
deliveries as well as services we provide. To illustrate
the importance of partnerships and understanding the
complexities involved in performance, fuels and lubricants,
we take a look at one field of motor sport, Formula 1, how
this is solved.

The flexibility we provide enables our customers

to choose solutions that are environmentally sound.
Wärtsilä power plants that run on biofuels are a good
example. The primary technology in this sector will be
reciprocating engines running on vegetable oil, giving
us a strong role in the renewables market, an area
expected to enjoy steady growth in the coming years.

Thank you for choosing Wärtsilä.

Miraculous design
Hummingbirds are among the world’s
smallest birds. Part of the family
Trochilidae, they are only found in the
Americas. The bee hummingbird, the
smallest of all, weighs less than two
grams and is just 5.7 cm long. The name
“hummingbird” comes from the sound
that their wings make as they fly.

Hummingbirds are renowned for their

supreme agility in flight. Able to hover
in mid-air by flapping their wings at
up to 70 or 80 times per second for
smaller species and 10 to 15 times for
larger ones, they can fly both forwards
and backwards – something that no
other bird can do – and they can achieve
speeds of up to 45 km per hour when
flying forwards. These amazing abilities
come at a price – they are unable to
walk on the ground.

Hummingbirds feed on the nectar of

flowers. Because the rapid beating of
their wings requires so much energy,

globe
their metabolic rate is higher than that
of any other animal except insects. They
typically consume more than their own
weight in food every day, which means
visits to hundreds of flowers. On cold
nights, hummingbirds save energy by
going into a state of torpor.

North American hummingbirds

migrate, and can fly long distances.
Before they begin their migration, they
have to increase their body weight by
50% in order to have sufficient fuel for
the journey.

The future
lies in Asia
Commercial shipping plays
a crucial role in the world
economy. The transportation
of raw materials, finished
goods, oil, ores and people
requires a large fleet of
different vessels. This has led
to an increase in the number
of ships being built. Most
merchant ships are now built
in Asia.

Asia also plays a growing role in Wärtsilä’s business.

We entered the market in the mid 1970s, at first via
dedicated agents and sales representatives. Development
of our own network of sales and service offices soon
followed. The first was in Singapore and was followed by
offices in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China and
Vietnam. Manufacturing began in Singapore in 1982.
Now we have manufacturing under licence, wholly-
owned manufacturing companies and joint ventures
in several Asian countries.

Recently, we expanded our operations in Vietnam,

power industries products and services. Almost all

A Formula One racing car is a technical

masterpiece. Its carbon fibre, metal, plastic and rubber

conditions. However, before the car can even be started,
two things are needed: energy and lubrication.
For Scuderia Ferrari, Shell provides both as tailor-made

on to the track. Whose fuel will last longest before a pit stop? Which
team has chosen the best fuel strategy for its driver?
At Formula One level, a race can be decided by the pit stop strategy,
when tyres are changed and the car is refuelled at an incredible 12
litres/second. The fuel itself must meet specifications set by the
Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Shell’s V-Power
fuel used by Ferrari F1 cars is a special blend of more than 200
components, tailor-made and optimized to match Ferrari’s strategy
whilst also meeting the stringent FIA requirements.
An equally important factor in how a Formula One racing car
performs is the lubricants employed. Their significance is increasingly
important as a key performance differentiator in a year which has
seen a provisional engine freeze until 2011 and also the introduction

stirred up the tracks for decades. Just as Ferrari knows how to look
after its treasured brand image, the value of a technical partnership
is thoroughly understood at Maranello. Shell has been a partner and
supplier to Ferrari since the time before Formula One began in 1950,
and the relationship between the two companies has developed and
blossomed. Their technical partnership was renewed in 1996 and
looking at Ferrari’s success in F1, the cooperation has indeed been
fruitful. Shell and Ferrari have contested more than 395 F1 races
together, winning 138 of them.
At every race, Shell provides Ferrari with full analytical services
for fuel and oil samples.
“A Formula One car is like a state-
of-the-art mobile testbed,” says a
charming young woman in a bright-
red motorhome at the Barcelona race
pit. She is Dr Lisa Lilley, Shell’s F1
Technology Manager.
Dr Lilley spends a mobile life
with two trackside analysts shuttling
between Maranello, Shell’s main
laboratory located near Chester in
the UK, and Formula One races.
“Apart from racing, we also
use Formula One for transferring
knowledge and technology when developing new consumer products.
For example, the advanced friction modification component in our
race fuel is also now used in our V-Power fuels marketed around the
world,” says Lilley, having to raise her voice a little as the noise from
the 700-horsepower engines being started up in the pit penetrates
the walls of the motorhome.

Shell’s V-Power racing fuel consists of more than 200 chemicals,

and a sample is submitted to the FIA for approval approximately
two weeks prior to every race. During the race itself, Shell’s Track
Lab samples the fuel to ensure that no changes in its makeup have
occurred – these could show up in random tests carried out by the
FIA and lead to a penalty.
”Every time fuel is moved in the Ferrari garage, we test it with
exactly the same gas chromatography that the FIA has. This way we
can give Ferrari absolute peace of mind that at every point during
the race weekend, their fuel is legal,” says Lilley.
What exactly is racing fuel, and how much does it differ from
normal petrol or gasoline?
“The FIA specification for race fuel is very similar to the EN
228 gasoline sold Europe-wide. The types of components have to
be the same as those you would find in a European, commercially-
available gasoline. But we can tailor our gasoline to the strategy that
Ferrari is pursuing. It may be power or fuel economy or working
well under hot conditions. Formula One gasoline would also work
well in your own private car and an F1 car will run on commercial

Engine oil’s ability to provide cooling as well as lubrication

is often overlooked. As pistons can reach temperatures higher
than 300°C, they are cooled by having engine oil sprayed on
their undersides. Without this extra protection they would
undoubtedly fail in race conditions.

Development of suitable lubricants for Ferrari is a continuous
process. “We have a team of about 40 technical staff in our
laboratories in England and Germany and they work seamlessly
each second. with the Ferrari engineers in Maranello developing new
innovations,” says Lilley.

Biofuels are part of the future. Asked about the future fuel
for Formula One cars and whether it could be diesel or biofuel,
Dr Lilley raises her arms and sighs. “The future, who knows!
Biofuels are, however, already on the FIA’s agenda. In 2008, we
will have to have 5.75% bio components in our race fuel.” She
does not, however, believe that diesel will be seen in F1 races
in the near future.
How about the price/litre of racing fuel compared to normal
petrol or gasoline. “Race fuel is priceless,” she says. “There’s no
price you could put on the work a team puts in to develop a
state-of-the-art-product.”
While discussing the environment, it emerges that the
amount of petrol used during a Formula One race weekend is
about the same as the amount sold by an average petrol station
in the same period. In one season, supplies to the Ferrari team
total approximately 200,000 litres.

Technical partnership is the key to success. The partnership

between Shell and Ferrari is an excellent example of a joint
expert effort winning team championships decade after decade.
Shell first supplied Enzo Ferrari with fuels and lubricants in the

Romeo racing team.

ärtsilä has entered the green energy wave by offering
liquid biofuel solutions that are supported by the EU. We have
proven technology that the market is demanding, so it’s giving
us a lot of business,” says Christer Strandvall, Regional Director, Europe
West, Sales & Marketing, Wärtsilä Power Plants. “Liquid biofuel is still a
niche market, but will become an important complement to our normal
business. And we do indeed foresee growth!”
“Wärtsilä is the market leader, and market share is developing in our
favour,” he says. “Our competitors have also taken note of this business,
but we’re 2-3 years ahead of them.”
That bullish view of the prospects for liquid biofuel power plants is,
for now, focused on Strandvall’s region of western Europe. “The future
business is ‘green energy’ in one form or another, thanks to the EU p

Wärtsilä in Italy. “Maybe it’s no coincidence
that our first project in Italy was in a town
called Monopoli!”
So far, these plants represent only a small
percentage, but the potential is massive.
“In Italy we expect growth of 8% a year
for all renewables,” says Golinelli. “For the
time being, the market is concentrated in
Italy, which has the most generous system
of ‘green certificates’ or renewable energy
incentives. Countries such as Germany,
France and Belgium are already applying the
Italian model to some degree.”
“Our colleagues in sales and marketing
have done very well, as have the people who
got the technology working,” says Senior
Development Engineer Niklas Haga. “Our
installations have been in operation in Italy
since August 2004 and experience has been
good.”
But why is Italy investing so heavily in
renewables? One reason is 18% of the
country’s energy is imported, one of the
highest rates for any industrialised country.
“Developments in vegetable oils could
lead to domestic sources such as rapeseed
and sunflowers. Both the government and
farmers support this development,” says
Golinelli. “Environmental aspects, including
CO2 emissions, are also driving factors.
Everyone wants limits, from national and
local authorities to opinion formers and
citizens.”

“We have many years of high-level knowledge about all kinds of engine
fuel. In that respect, we are certainly the leader,” says Jacob Klimstra,
Senior Energy and Engine Expert, based in Zwolle.
All the biofuel plants built or under construction so far run on palm
oil. “For some years, the price of palm oil has been lower than that
of other vegetable oils,” says Haga. There are however some serious
questions about its sustainability.
“As a recent WWF report pointed out, palm oil can only be a
renewable if it is produced in a sustainable way,” says Golinelli. “But it
must not interfere with either the food industry or with rainforests.”
“Both the EU and national governments demand proof that liquid
biofuels have sustainable origins and that’s not always easy,” adds
Klimstra.
“Other types of vegetable oils and renewable fuels are continuously
being developed,” says Strandvall. “The most promising sources are
rapeseed, soybeans and sunflower seeds. All of these are at about the
same level of development right now. Then there are others, like jatropha
seeds.”

Plusses and minuses. “Some of the main advantages of vegetable oils

are that they can be viewed as CO2 neutral and sulphur-free,” says Haga.
“Vegetable oils also have good combustion characteristics, permitting
good engine performance.”
“Another important element is that the use of these environmentally-
friendly fuels can be programmed, and is not weather-dependent like
solar, wind, and hydropower,” says Golinelli. “If need be, you can import
and stockpile fuel just like we do with petroleum.”
“The disadvantage of liquid biofuel power plants are that they today
are dependent on subsidies in order for them to be economically feasible,
“Vegetable oils as fuel prices are relatively high and as secondary emission reduction
equipment and catalysts are required to meet emission regulations,”
also have good says Klimstra. “Here in The Netherlands, the subsidy scheme has been
temporarily halted, even though a good number of projects have secured
combustion subsidies in the last decade.”
Despite this, Strandvall says that Wärtsilä has a number of projects

A paradigm shift is occurring as owners are
tending to move away from an emphasis on
heavy fuel economy towards the best available
technology for emissions reduction. Interest
in ‘green’ vessels is rising in the escort tug
marketplace where dual fuel technology will
find an increasing number of applications in
emissions-sensitive coastal areas. The electric

upward swing as more offshore operators show
interest. The use of Low Loss electric drive

The US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) continues to increase the requirements
for reduced emissions from marine engines.
Recently, the EPA proposed Tier 3 rulings for
engines below 30 litres per cylinder, targeting
PM and NOx reductions for 2009. Tier 4
emission standards require high-efficiency
after-treatment technology to reduce PM and
NOx. This will be possible by use of the clean
diesel fuel with a sulphur content capped at 15
parts per million which will be available in 2012.

deal of attention was also given to the
design of the seal face and seat, the
elements that are actually in contact.
Selection of silicon carbide for these
components proved to be a wise
decision, as the fine flat finish results in
seal leakage rates being negligible, and
its hard-wearing characteristics and
resistance to abrasion mean that wear
rates are very low even when levels of
sand or silt are very high.

“Work on ManeGuard water-

the end of 2007 – and development is
unlikely to stop there,” says Kohle.

It’s that time of the year again. Yachts and sailboats have been
set free in the Koivusaari yacht harbour to the west of Helsinki.
The faint sound of jazz floats across the steely white surface of
the water.
Amongst the gently rocking surroundings, two guys, Lauri
Lehtinen and Heikki Soininen, aren’t just hanging around. They
hop onto a featherlike boat with a huge sail and glide away, quickly
and effortlessly.
Spying on them from astern is impressive, they seem to
skip over the waves. Stretched almost horizontal above the
waves of the Baltic Sea, there’s no other way than to be
one with the differing breezes. The wind speed is close to the ideal
5-7 metres per second that makes their boat fly.
Their 49er is a 5-metre-long, double-handed sailing dinghy weighing
about 90 kilograms. Thanks to its massive sail and a lightweight hull that
offers minimal drag, the boat accelerates quickly and can reach speeds as
high as 30 knots.
This year, Lauri and Heikki have been wrestling with wave and wind in
the United States, Spain and France. Other locations on the list for 2007
are Portugal, China and Italy.
Beneath the quiet humour, you can sense their determined concentration.
These two energetic and relaxed young sailors are well on the way towards
providing their seniors with a serious challenge.
Lauri Lehtinen, 20, fed and raised on sailing, attended his first race at
the respectable age of seven. His sister Silja also tours the globe, in the
same races. Heikki Soininen, 23, has been sailing since 2000.

Utmost teamwork. For Lauri, it has been a demanding year – he graduated

from sports high school and is applying to enter Helsinki University of
Technology, where Heikki already studies.
Their journey with a 49er began in the autumn of 2005,
after achieving consistent success in the junior classes. Their
coach is former Olympic sailor Kasimir Johansson.
Teams that tackle the same waters, competing all over
the world, get to know each other pretty well. Sailing
is teamwork also in the sense that teams perfect their
skills together, comparing notes while they are on the
water. “Competitors exchanging information and tips
is part of what we do.”
At its core, it’s about learning to know the wind and
how to get the best out of it. “You’re observing the
shape of the coastline, clouds, the surface of the water,
how other boats are behaving. Really light breezes can
be hard to read”, says Heikki.
Although they are clearly proud to be one of the
youngest 49er teams, Lauri and Heikki emphasize that
understanding different types of winds and reacting to them gets easier
as the years pass.
Nothing beats the kick you get from racing past older sailors, though.
“While the others may benefit from their greater experience, we benefit
from our enthusiasm and youth.”
In Lauri’s opinion, as long as sailing doesn’t start to feel like too much
work, it rolls along well and its fascination persists. “It’s important to
stay relaxed.” p

heikki soininen back from our trips, but the truth is that you get a tan on cloudy days, too,”
says Lauri. “You’d be surprised to know how much time gets spent checking
and rechecking parts, crawling about in the dark with a flashlight.”
Tight cooperation brings the best results. On a 49er, successful
performance comes from equal contributions. As helmsman, Lauri is
responsible for steering the boat, Heikki’s job as crew is speed. Achieving
the desired result stems from reacting instinctively to the conditions - and
to each others’ actions.
It also transpires that hanging onto those ropes, brushing the surface
of the sea, is only one of the many activities that Lauri and Heikki have
mastered.
Much of the time competing ends up being spent on driving a loaded
van, packing and unpacking, chasing new parts from the hardware store
and making sure the sails are in perfect condition. “Oh yes, we’re also very
good at sewing,” says Lauri, grinning.
“We’re mechanics, drivers and communication officers,” Heikki lists.
On their journeys they also write a blog.
The hunt for an Olympic medal is on. Future thoughts lie with the
2008 Olympic games in China. Their long-term goal is to win an Olympic
medal in London in 2012. Camp-style training with relentless discipline
will be the rule during upcoming summers.
Has sailing the seven seas crossed their minds? “Sailing around the world
is certainly on our wish list,” says Lauri, nodding. Before that, however,
winning medals is the top priority.
“It would be great to quit when you’re at the top,” they say, and their
smiles tell you these guys are for real.

the next few years.
“With cruise ships, it’s all about reliability of operation.
The next most important criteria are environmental
concerns and cost-efficiency. All these requirements can
be met by using this new concept, even though some
challenges remain. Right now we’re ahead of the market, so
to say, and there is, for example, no existing infrastructure
for the supply of LNG to ships.”
This does not mean that LNG is not available. Supply
can be arranged using trucks, small LNG carriers and
barges. All major cruising areas have a number of LNG
terminals located nearby. Also, since the chances are that
a cruise ship would represent a major customer for LNG,
most gas suppliers would be ready and willing to provide
any gas that is required. Another incentive is the fact that
cruise operators would probably be looking to make long-
term contracts with gas suppliers.
“It’s a very simple issue of supply and demand. Once
natural gas becomes more widely used in the maritime
industry, the necessary infrastructure will emerge,” says
Danska.
Another potential challenge is the fact that an LNG-
fuelled vessel and a conventional ship have different cost
structures. While the larger vessel size and an LNG system
imply increased investment costs, the resulting lower energy
consumption means lower fuel costs in operation.
“There’s no “The long-term advantages outweigh the small increase

Developing CRM
in Singapore
T e x t: J o h n Pa g n i P hoto : W ä r t s ilä

Dedication to the customer by plotting a new course

for CRM (Customer relationship management) have
been the watchwords in Singapore for Wärtsilä’s Ship
Power and Services businesses in their relationship with
BW Shipping (BWS), a locally-based global carrier.

Mervin Ong, General Manager, Ship Power, Wärtsilä

Singapore is a 25-year veteran in this geographical and
business area and likes to say that he actually grew up
with the company. Nowadays, he is confident that the
organization is moving in the right direction by increasing
its focus on customer service.

What’s been the secret of your

success with BWS?
Basically, the new CRM model we introduced at the
end of 2004. This entails combining the sales forces of
Ship Power and Services and nominating a dedicated
Key Account Manager (KAM) for core customers. Brian
Leong is the KAM for BWS and it’s his face that presents
one Wärtsilä for both Ship Power and Services. He has
the right chemistry with people at all levels in BWS and
they trust him, so it wasn’t difficult for them to accept
this new concept.

What advantages has BWS gained?

Many. For example, they get a quicker response from
us regardless of whether the enquiry is related to a
newbuilding project or spare parts/services. BWS can
also relax in the knowledge that a dedicated person
from Wärtsilä is taking care of their interests - unlike the
previous situation when they had to deal with several

How did you weave the different
