he nickname for a 3½-mile stretch of sand just north of Huntington
Beach, Tin Can Beach reached the heights of trashiness in the
1940s and '50s when it was the sometime domain of hobos,
drinkers, free spirits and vacationers.
California's coastline is full of colorfully named strands like Seal Beach,
Pismo Beach and Muscle Beach. However, Tin Can Beach — a wacky
monument to littering — is just a memory.
The nickname for a 3½-mile stretch of sand just north of Huntington
Beach, Tin Can Beach reached the heights of trashiness in the 1940s and
'50s when it was the sometime domain of hobos, drinkers, free spirits and
vacationers.
They built cardboard shacks, erected tents and thought nothing of toss-
ing used cans, bottles, paper plates and other debris to the ground.
Their symbol was an assemblage of more than 100 rusting beer con-

leadership. Just one leader is all we need...articulate, factually accu-
rate, visionary, perhaps a dreamer who sees the path to greatness and
balance between the new world and old world on downtown HB.
That path to greatness is, in fact...Walnut Avenue.
The Abdelmuti Family with the Walk of Fame and their great retail
success story with Jack's Surf Boards combines with that local icon,
Huntington Surf & Sport and the Aaron Pai success story and their
Surfer's Hall of Fame have both spent their hard earned money to
build lasting tributes to our surf culture.
What if... maybe, perhaps... Walnut Ave is transformed into a cor-
ridor that visitors and locals both get to experience the best of our
history, culture, roots and future. Suppose we dedicate this path to
our future to everything that makes our Surf City brand work; not
just surfers, but the entire enchilada that makes us who we are.
Musics, legends like Jan & Dean and the songs of surf, movies
that placed on the big screen the life style of a generation of young
people that entertained my generation growing up. Annette, Bobby,
Daren, Dion, etc, all contribute to this concept that we call Surf City
USA.
Suppose with cover the walkways with every talent, medium, art,
history that has made us who we are including...a wooden oil Derek
that helped pay the way to today Tin Can Beach be the beautifully
landscaped 9 mile long pristine HB shoreline!
Who will pick up the gauntlet, perhaps convince the Downtown
BID to set aside money each year to help financially pave the way?
What if we created an artful, attractive, well lit, safe, educational,
entertaining pathway to the future connecting the nostalgic with the
future... perhaps both worlds would prosper... more important we
would benefit, all of us just plain, old fashion resident taxpayers...
Just one leader, no agenda, no commercial benefit, for the good of
the whole... just one!
Let me close with an idea my good friend Dean Torrence, Jan &
Dean Fame... listen up - we use the "Star Fish," along our path way
to help memorialize the significant and diverse history of what made
Surf City USA... what it is today.

Some residents from the East seemed to have ended up at Tin
Can Beach because they couldn't go any farther west.
"I'm out of a job," one of the mayor's constituents, a Dover,
N.H., man, said as he lay in the sun, surrounded by hundreds of
beer cans. "This is a cheap place to live."
The dwellers fished in the surf and bathed in the ocean. Gaso-
line stations on Pacific Coast Highway took care of other needs.
And the authorities largely ignored them because the beach was

are what we have in common". True then,
true now.
Today, Some are surfers, some observers, some
quietly pray, some softly, maybe, loudly chant, or
sing. Some don't. Considering such mixture, we're
here! So welcome to the Blessings of the Waves!!
Wind ... Our planet in motion. Water ... The
unique element of Earth that God has chosen for
our Planet.
Combine them: Wind over water become waves.
It Becomes Humanity in Motion. the waves give to
humanity, not only in recreation but in livelihood.
Ships of Trade, or humanitarian missions. Deliv-
ering His Promised abundance to be exchanged, or
conquering a deficit, in far off lands. keeping us in
touch with our Neighbors, as God has Commanded.
Love thy Neighbor.
Recreation... Such as sailing or surfing. in surf
city, we surely have neighbors who enjoy His waters
together.
Again, Love Thy Neighbor. And so, we Bless the
Waves ...
Surfing the waves can take hold of a life. It pro-
vokes travel, leads us to examine an assortment of
sciences. geography, highest mathematics , ecology,
and chemistry, and the cultures of peoples. all of
which is His alphabet. Galileo knew this.
Either of these furthers us to Love Thy Neighbor.
Any vessel will do. Whether it's enormous ships, or
a simple surfboard... The leisure we appreciate in
using surfboards create a lifelong appreciation for
the Magic and Mystery of God's waters. This also
keeps us in His Commandments. Love God .
Where surfing is concerned, it's easy. Catching
waves is to spend your Life learning to Know
Him, keeping us In his relationship for life. Soli-
tude and Contemplation in action. To God, that is
nothing new.
You may be surprised to learn the recreation of
surfing itself is ancient! Resonating from about three
thousand years ago,. The appetite to ride waves
today, is unchanged. Surfing is both ancient and
modern, and as natural as it is technical. Timeless.
As Only God could.
We pursue surfing with constant innovation.
Looking at the developments of board builders and
shapers through a century, this proves there is no
such thing as "just a surfer". It is from God.
Some will surrender stability or economic gain
to pursue the endless summer; others will plan and
cherish the earned leisure to surf. And, the Waves
will Always be there, whenever we meet them.
This is our Global relationship. Ubiquitous. God,
shows up.
Bless the Waves.
The waves give meaning to words like Stoke and
Goofy Foot. A simple pinkie and thumb shake, an
understood message of goodwill. The suspenseful
sounds of surf music, which no other sport or recre-
ation has its own music. The thick, dense, and inten-
tional sounds of electrifying guitar strings translate
the energy of the waves.
No lyrics are necessary.
Quite possibly the highest form of human expres-
sion as art: because Surfing is Art on top of Art, on
top of Art.
The art of God's waves, the artful design from the
surfboard builder, combined with artistry of God's
human design, in graceful or daring posture.
As Gustave Flaubert noticed, "there is not a parti-
cle of life that does not bear poetry within it"
Surfing is poetry in motion. Johannes Kepler re-
minds by his quote: "Nature uses as little as possible
of anything." The waves are simple. Miracles are
sometimes, just simple. A willing heart and a surf-
board are all it takes to experience the idea of "walk-
ing on water".
All because of wind blowing over water. How
simple How Profound.
To ponder: what does surfing mean? Is it Man
versus Nature? Or could it be Man in Praise of Na-
ture? Only God knows, but we can start by paddling
out for our own answer. Bless the Waves!!!

Tin Can Beach!
private property, belonging to more than 200 absentee own-
ers who had acquired parcels during an oil boom in the
1920s. By 1956, many of them had "become wealthy and
disappeared," The Times said.
In the meantime, the property was leased by the Signal
Oil and Gas Co., which occasionally cleaned up the debris
just to keep the mounds of cans from blocking the view of
the ocean from PCH.
Some of the inhabitants were more conscientious than the
litterbugs, flocking to the beach to find relief from the sun
in that era before air conditioning.
"It was not uncommon for people to go and
stay for a week or two at a time," Ed Sweeny
recalled on a Huntington Beach website. "Our
families, 20 to 30 members, would go during
the summer when it was so hot in the Inland
Valley, and pitch Army tents. The men would
go off to work every day and come back to the
beach afterward. The adults would sleep in the
tents on cots and the kids would sleep out
under the stars.... We would have campfires
every night.... It was so much fun."
Of course, not all was idyllic at Tin Can
Beach.
Some children would suffer cuts on "their
feet from all the tin can lids buried in the sand,"
Sweeny said.
Though people didn't seem to fear violent
crime in those days, theft was not unknown.
An unemployed carpenter named Smith told The Times in
1954 that some of his tools had been stolen, prompting him
to devise a makeshift burglar alarm: a marble in a milk bottle
hung on his front door.
And, Smith added, he was sometimes awakened by peo-
ple tearing timbers from his walls to use as kindling for
beach fires. (Nothing more annoying than having your house
torn down by the neighbors.)
The weather could also be a nuisance, since building stan-
dards were somewhat lax. Chuck Taylor of El Monte com-

Lawmakers in Guadalajara, Mex-
ico have found a solution to have the

crimes—legalize sex in public.
Jalisco state’s capital city passed
the law stripping police the authority
to arrest people performing sexual
acts in public. The initiative was pro-
posed by council members in
Guadalajara, one of the most conser-
vative cities in Mexico, to prevent
police extortion.
“Having sexual relations or com-
mitting acts of exhibitionism of a
sexual nature in public places, vacant
lots, inside vehicles or in private lo-
cations in public view will be consid-
ered administrative offenses, as long
as a citizen requests police interven-
tion,” reads the modification to arti-
cle 14 of the Bylaws of Good
Government.

Morfin Otero, who drafted the meas-
ure, cited a recent survey of college

years, but eventu-
ally the numerous
owners of the prop-
erty, or their next of
kin, were located.
The state acquired
the site for $1 mil-
lion, renamed it
Bolsa Chica State
Beach and removed
the cans, including
the ones that spelled
out Tin Can Beach.
Nowadays, sleep-
ing overnight on the
sand is forbidden. "NO tent camping," a beach website
warns, as though in fear of some old-time residents return-
ing. Owners of recreational vehicles can sleep in the parking
lots, but it's not free. Fees range from $50 to $65 per night.
No vestige of Tin Can Beach survives. A reporter walking
on the pristine sand between two lifeguard stations on Friday
couldn't find a single discarded beer can.
And the "Bolsa Chica State Beach" sign at the entrance is
made of concrete, not tin.

Sex after dark in one of Amsterdam’s most
popular public parks has been allowed since
2008. Vondelpark’s rules are to keep the
space clean, away from children’s areas, not
too much noise, and do not leave condoms
behind. But, pet owners are not allowed to let
their dogs off the leash—it’s illegal there.

If NASCAR conducted an open search for a
CEO and France submitted an application under
a pseudonym, he would be the last person consid-
ered for the position. He was anointed CEO in 2003 by his uncle, Jim
France, and his sister, Lesa France Kennedy, the other two stockholders of
the family owned company, because they were unwilling to be the public
face of the sport. While some good things happened in NASCAR during
Brian’s early years in office, they occurred in spite of him, not because of
him.
The company is blessed with capable executives at the highest levels,
most of whom were hired before Brian became CEO. I know because I
worked with a number of them – and one worked for me - while I owned
the Daytona Cubs, the Minor League baseball team in Daytona Beach in
the 1990’s. NASCAR as a sport also came of age in the 1990’s and early
2000’s, thanks to talented drivers with outsized personalities – Dale Earn-

hardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. among them – and television’s unquenchable
appetite for live sports programming.
Earnhardt, Sr. died in a crash during the 2001 Daytona 500 and Junior
retired last year. Other big names, including Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart,
and Danica Patrick, have also retired from the sport
in recent years. Attendance at NASCAR races and
television viewership have been in free fall for a
decade. According to ESPN, TV ratings for the first
16 races of the season are down 20% and admis-
sions revenue to 14 Cup Series weekends since the
Daytona 500 is down almost 15%.
I met Brian in the early 1990’s when we shared
a bus ride during a sport NGO event in Florida.
No one would have confused him with CEO ma-
terial then and he has proven the point through
his actions and inactions.
France frittered away the last vestiges of cred-
ibility he may have had in that fateful night in Sag Har-
bor. He is as qualified to run NASCAR as he was to drive an automobile
when he was arrested. Brian should make his leave permanent and spare
Jim and Lesa from doing it for him.

ost wars are won well in advance, and
Russia and China are both feverishly
preparing to win the next major world war
between global superpowers.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military has been fo-
cused on “fighting terrorism” and projecting
U.S. power in a “post-Cold War” environ-
ment. Of course the truth is that a new “Cold
War” has now erupted, and Russia and China
can both see the writing on the wall and they
are both developing impressive new weapons
systems. Unfortunately, our military planners
seem to think that war with Russia and/or
China is not very likely, and as a result our
strategic forces have aged nearly to the point
of obsolescence. In fact, a 60 Minutes inves-
tigation discovered that our nuclear forces
were still using technology from the 1960s
and 1970s, including rotary phones and enor-
mous 8-inch floppy disks. Most Americans
assume that we would easily win a military
conflict with Russia and/or China due to our
“vast superiority”, but in this article you will
see that is not necessarily the case.
Let’s start with Russia. Earlier this month,
we learned that they have launched a new
generation of supersonic strike bombers…
The Tu-22M3M is a ‘deep moderisation’
of the Tu-22M3 which Russia’s air force has
about 100 in service and used extensively in
missions over Syria in support of the Assad
regime.
Known as “carrier killers”, these enormous
bombers can travel vast distances to reach
their targets…
The Tu-22M3M jet is designed to strike
sea and ground targets at a distance of up to
2,200km (1,367 miles) using bombs and
guided missiles. The modified plane has a
more comfortable cockpit, can travel longer
distances, and fly faster due to its more pow-
erful engine. About 80 percent of its electron-
ics was updated, the plane’s manufacturers
say.
Of much greater concern are the brand new
intercontinental ballistic missiles that Russia
has developed that are far superior to any-
thing that the U.S. possesses. The following
comes from ABC News…

that form the basis of its nuclear deterrent.
The Sarmat, which NATO named “Satan 2,”
has been in development since at least 2011
and is believed to be able to carry

down on up to 16 different targets.
Now let’s talk about China for a few mo-
ments. The Chinese are developing au-
tonomous AI robotic subs that will be capable
of hitting targets anywhere on the entire
globe…
China is developing large, smart and rela-
tively low-cost unmanned submarines that
can roam the world’s oceans to perform a
wide range of missions, from reconnaissance
to mine placement to even suicide attacks
against enemy vessels, according to scientists
involved in these artificial intelligence (AI)
projects.
The autonomous robotic submarines are
expected to be deployed in the early 2020s.
While not intended to entirely replace
human-operated submarines, they will chal-
lenge the advantageous position established
by Western naval powers after the second
world war. The robotic subs are aimed par-
ticularly at the United States forces in strate-
gic waters like the South China
Sea and western Pacific
Ocean, the researchers
said.

At this point, even the brass

China is actively developing its fleet of
long-range bombers and “likely” training its
pilots for missions targeting the US, accord-
ing to a new Pentagon report.
Of course we don’t know everything, and
the Russians and the Chinese are inevitably
developing systems that will end up being a
complete surprise during the next world war.
For instance, some U.S. officials are spec-
ulating that a strange Russian satellite that is
behaving very unusually may be some sort of
a weapon…

Meanwhile, gridlock in Washington has
produced a military that is deeply unprepared
for a conflict between the superpowers. The
following excerpt comes from a recent piece

making a Russian first strike much easier.
• Since the Cold War, U.S. ballistic missile
submarines have declined from 30-40 to 14
today, scheduled to decline to 12 in the future,

boats to deter surprise attack.
• Russia’s modern ICBMs have yield-ac-
curacy combinations enabling them to make
a surprise first-strike destroying all U.S.
bombers, ICBMs and submarines at port
(one-half to two-thirds of all submarines).
• Russia has advanced Third Generation
nuclear weapons, such as Super-EMP war-
heads, that could paralyze U.S. nuclear
forces, including strategic C3 necessary for
any surviving U.S. submarines at sea to re-
taliate.
• Russia has at least a tenfold advantage in
tactical nuclear weapons, and at least a
twofold advantage in overall numbers of nu-
clear weapons.
And this could especially be true for the
Russians, because they have the most ad-
vanced anti-missile systems on the entire
planet and can easily handle just about any-
thing that we can throw at them.

are the lifeblood of planet
earth and humankind. They
flow over more than three quarters of our planet and
hold 97 percent of the planet’s water. They produce
more than half the oxygen in the atmosphere
and absorb the most carbon from it. We must
keep our oceans healthy and productive.
The International Coastal Cleanup is being
held Saturday, September 15. Join the
world’s largest trash pickup day to keep your
local beaches and coastal waters beautiful
and healthy.
Since the Cleanup formed in Texas more
than 30 years ago, the local event to pick up
ocean litter and record each item, has grown
to an international phenomenon involving
volunteers from more than 100 countries.
The documentation helps to identify trending
pollution and its sources in a fight for trash-
free seas.
The California Coastal Commission is
hosting over a thousand inland and coastal
cleanup sites from 9 a.m. to noon on Satur-
day, September 15 to commemorate Coastal Cleanup
Day. Locally, there are about 50 Coastal Cleanup Day
and Inner-coastal and Watershed Clean-up Day sites
where you can volunteer.
The Orange County Water District (OCWD) is a
sponsor of the Inner-coastal & Watershed Clean-up
Day. It was established by the non-profit organization
Trails4All, which saw the need to clean the inland area
along the Santa Ana River, before debris could reach
the coast. It continues to host it in conjunction with
Coastal Cleanup Day efforts on Sept. 15.
In addition to sponsoring cleanups, the Orange
County Water District and the Orange County Sanita-
tion District (OCSD) are doing their parts to keep local
Pacific Ocean waters clean. Trash removal starts up-
stream of the Santa Ana River in Orange County. At
Imperial Highway in Anaheim, OCWD uses a giant
gripper (think of an arcade claw machine that you have
to maneuver to get your prize). The gripper grabs and
removes everything from massive branches and bowl-
ing balls, to other large, natural and man-made debris
from the river. During times of heavy trash and algae
growth, staff will run the machine every hour. A second
OCWD location at Glassell Avenue in Orange uses a

City Council and was Mayor twice. Huntington Beach has been home to the Green Family over 41 years
self-cleaning trash rack that removes debris by using
a lifting car assembly.
After large debris is removed, Santa Ana River water
is then diverted by OCWD to Anaheim reservoirs,
where it percolates and refills the groundwater basin,
so very little river water reaches the ocean.
In addition, each day, the Sanitation District takes in
and treats about 200 million gallons of wastewater
from homes and businesses, enough to fill Angel Sta-
dium nearly three times, and sends a majority of it to
the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) for
processing. The GWRS captures and reuses waste-
water that would normally flow out to sea and puts it
through an advanced purification process to create
near-distilled quality drinking water for 2.5 million
people and businesses in Orange County.

Dear EarthTalk: I know that ranchers and en-
vironmentalists have traditionally been at odds,
but what are some ways they are working together

Ranchers and environmental advo-
cates haven’t always seen eye-to-eye,
but the differences between the two
aren’t as extreme anymore, as more and
more ranchers have come around to the
understanding that taking good care of
the land supports both economic stabil-
ity and environmental health.
“For some, ranching was pursued in
the past with an emphasis on raising
beef at the expense of everything else,”
says Bill Bryan of the Montana-based
Rural Landscape Institute in a recent
Christian Science Monitor. “As a matter
of necessity, the old way of ranching is
giving way to a new paradigm. Raising
animals for the dinner table isn’t an ac-
tivity that has to be at odds with the environment.”
According to the non-profit WWF, grazing—
when done right—is key to maintaining biological
diversity and ecosystem health across the Northern
Great Plains, a 183-million-acre expanse of range-
lands spanning five U.S. states and two Canadian
provinces. “This vast landscape evolved in har-
mony with large herbivores such as bison and elk,
and must be grazed in order to remain healthy,” re-
ports WWF, which works with hundreds of ranch-

Some ranchers are going a step further by
adopting so-called “Holistic Resource Manage-
ment” techniques based on traditional practices

a wild herd. “Altering cattle grazing patterns
and herd clustering to emulate those of their
buffalo predecessors has a significant positive
impact on the environment, including the health
and diversity of the native grasses,” reports the
non-profit Organic Consumers Association.

could zero out the greenhouse gas contribution
from areas that are grazed,” says John Hart, an

of the best deals you can get when you're
buying a new car. You'll sometimes hear
people call such financing "free money."
It's not that exactly, but it's as close as you're
likely to get. Zero-percent loans tend to grab atten-
tion, but they make up only about 9 percent of the
dealer-financed car loans in 2015 to date, accord-
ing to Edmunds data.
Provided you can qualify for a zero-percent car
loan, it sounds like a no-brainer. But is it really a
good deal? Are there any catches? And if you were
planning on paying cash, is it even worth consid-
ering?
How Can It Be Zero Percent?
Zero-percent loans are typically offered by au-
tomakers' financing companies. They forgo the
money they would have made
on loans with interest in favor
of selling more of a particular
vehicle. This financing incen-
tive can spark sales of a slow-
selling vehicle or help clear out
inventory to make room for
cars from the new model year.
Carmakers advertise the no-
interest loans in commercials,
at dealerships or on their web-
sites. We suggest taking a look
at Edmunds' Incentives and
Rebates page. It highlights
zero-percent financing offers
and other promotions for the
month.
How To Qualify
Zero-percent loans are typi-
cally reserved for buyers with
excellent credit. The fine print
on automaker websites often
says things like "for qualified
buyers" or "based on Tier One
credit." The language doesn't
really spell out what that
means in terms of FICO scores. And the range it-
self can vary from one automaker to another, so
we suggest calling the dealership to see what the
requirements are.
