The year has come and the University of the Philippines

welcomes the Freshies again! Such new souls to be molded as
Iskolars ng Bayan!

What is UP and who can you be in UP? This UPV CM

Freshie E-booklet aims to prepare you for the university and to
give you a better understanding of what our college has to
offer. This booklet contains the accounts of UPV CM
organizations that are ready to adopt new set of people in the
family as this academic year begins. Also, this provides you
simple tips and know-hows inside the university, what it’s like
to be an Isko or Iska, and most especially how to #SurviveUP.

This is a phase of adjusting as one enters and strives to

satisfy the standards UP has set. This is a phase of coping up
with life, as well as trying to excel academically. This is a phase
of making new acquaintances, learnings, and experiences.

We hope that this guidebook will help you cope in

beginning the momentous journey ahead. We, your CM family,
are cheering for you as new Iskolars ng Bayan!

Welcome Isko and Iska!

UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES VISAYAS
HISTORY, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES

The university of the Philippines Visayas was established by the board of

regents on May 31, 1979 in response to the need to accelerate the development
of fisheries and marine resources of the country. The concept of a new
autonomous university of the UP System, as conceived in 1975, was to be
realized by means of an expanded fisheries education, research, and extension
service programs with its main campus in Miagao, IIoilo and with the College of
Fisheries as its flagship college.

On October 30, 1980, Executive Order No. 628 operationalized the UP

Visayas as an autonomous unit of the University of the Philippines System, which
was to consist of the College of Fisheries, College of Arts and Sciences, Institute
of Fisheries Development and Research, Brackishwater Aquaculture Center,
School of Development Management, Graduate School, School of Technology
and such other units as may be approved and funded pursuant to the provisions
of the General Appropriations Act.

As the fourth autonomous university of the UP System, UP Visayas aims to

1) develop excellence and leadership in fisheries and marine education, research
and extension in the country, 2) expand opportunities for professional and
technical training to the rural areas, 3) contribute to professional and technical
training to the rural areas, 4) contribute to rural development through relevant
instructional, research and extension programs in management, education,
engineering, health and related fields, and 5) preserve and enhance the national
and Visayan cultural heritage.

In 1986, UP Cebu and UP Tacloban Colleges were integrated into UP

Visayas. However, in September 2010, the UP Board of Regents approved UP
Cebu as an autonomous unit, leaving UPV with only five academic units effective
