Title: Water’s Properties Matthew Ortiz

9/27/10

Introduction: Water, which makes up for about 75% of our planet is essential for life.

97% of the water is not drinkable and we get our 3% from ice caps, freshwater lakes and rivers.

Water has some unique properties to it such surface tension. For instance, water can walk against

gravity allowing it to move up from roots of trees called capillary action allowing it to work

against gravity. Because water is so dense some items such as ice , all or even paper clips can

float on it. Water makes up about most of our body which means you would die of dehydration

without water.

Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to experiment and observe water so that we could

learn more about its composition and abilities

Procedure:

In part 1 we took a dropper and put drops in the graduated cylinder and counted

how many drops make up 1ml. Then we put drops of water on the penny until is overflowed.

Next we predicted how many drops there would be on it before it overflowed. In part 2, we

repeated that process except the penny had soap on it. In part 3 we had a piece of wax paper and

a glass slide and predicted what the water would do when we dropped it on it. Then we

proceeded to put drops on each and observe what happened. In part 4 we put 8ml of water in a

10ml graduated cylinder and then slowly added 2ml of water in. Then we observed. In part 4b

we did the exact opposite and put 8ml of oil in and 2ml of water. We observed. In part 4c we got

the 2 cylinders from the experiments and predicted what would happen if we put water soluble

dye in it. WE then proceeded to put a few drops in the cylinders and stirred them with glass

stirring rods. Then in part 5 we took glass beaker and filled it with water. Then we carefully
placed a paper clip on the surface with tweezers to see if it would float. We omitted part 6. In

part 7 we took the same glass beaker and placed pepper on the surface of the water to get an even

layer on the surface of the water. We then placed a drop of liquid soap in the middle and

observed what happened.

4.Yea
5.It didn’t allow the water to stick to the penny

6.It doesn’t allow bacteria to stick to the plate

Part 3

3. The wax paper didn’t stick to the water so it just floated around in groups, the glass

however allowed the water to stick so it got in one big group.

Part 4

2. the oil will float on the water

4. the oil floated on top of the water

Part 4b

2.water will make its way to the bottom of the cylinder

4. oil is less dense

5. it allows the water to enter the cells

Part 4c

1. The dye will mix with the water

2. In each cylinder the dye didn’t let go until is got into the water and in the one with

8ml the water went up after stirring but its slowly sinking back

Part 5

1. it does not go beneath the surface of the water

2. yes it is because it did not beneath the surface

3. surface tension

Part 7

1. The soap broke the surface tension causing some of its pepper to sink to the bottom of

the beaker

Conclusion

1.Water molecules stick together, water is denser that oil and water and oil don’t mix

2.It keeps it hydrated

3.Yes, you hit the surface and almost stop and it feels like someone is slapping you

4.Keeps them hydrated: the sweat evaporates leaving your skin feeling cool

5. Cohesion and adhesion, covalent, opposites attract which pull the molecules together

6.Surface tension
