“What can you say about the state of science and technology in the Philippines, during (1) Pre-colonial
Times, (2) Spanish Colonization, (3) American Colonization, and (4) 21st Century?”

The background of the science and technology in the Philippines started way back in Philippine
history. It is classified into four main eras: Pre-colonial Times, Spanish Colonization, American
Colonization and 21st Century. In each period, the inhabitants of the archipelago or the Filipinos had their
own particular system and use of science and technology. The unique utilization of science and
technology in each period kept their lives organized and sustained all throughout the course of history up
to this day.

During the Pre-colonial times, the use of science and technology by the Filipino natives was
focused on agricultural and indigenous purposes. In the early times, they used their scientific knowledge
in planting crops, taking care of animals, predicting seasons and climates by interpreting the movements
of heavenly bodies and discovering the medicinal uses of plants. While on the other hand, their way in
technology was applied by developing different kinds of tools with their own purposes to help them in
their day-to-day lives. These tools include tools for fishing, hunting, planting and cooking. They also
developed their modes of transportation, both land and water, and musical instruments.

During the Spanish Colonization, the Spaniards brought their own culture and practices and introduced
them into our country. They established schools and different concepts of science were taught. Science
and technology in this era became modernized as Filipinos adapted the ways of life of the Spaniards.
They blessed the country with new developments including superstitious beliefs and Catholic doctrines.

During the American Colonization, the Americans had more influence in the development of science and
technology in the country compared to the Spaniards. They reorganized the learning of science, explored
the mineral resources of the country and improved the transportation and communications systems.
Education was highly improved and modernized and they helped in the control of tropical diseases, The
Americans did everything to “Americanize” our country. They introduced new knowledge and
technology in the country and little by little, these efforts built a stronger foundation for science and
technology in our country.

Now in the present era or the 21st Century, we Filipinos now make use of the knowledge the colonizers
brought to us. We inherited a lot from them and they became very beneficial to our country. The use of
science and technology in the present time is a combination of all the three preceding periods. While we
make use of the influence of both Spaniard and Americans, we have not yet forgotten our state of science
and technology in the Pre-Colonial times. We still use those practices in our agricultural ways.

The state of science and technology in the Philippines throughout its historical background was
shaped by influences and human and social activities. As time passed by, science and technology
continued to improve and evolve. Science and technology have a big positive impact in our lives and in
the development of the Philippine society. Both keep our way of living organized and sustained. And just
like in history, history will repeat itself. Not literally, but in a way that science and technology will still
continue to further develop and improve through time.
