III. Procedure
A. Review
Class, do you know what a noun is? What is it? Nouns are naming words.
It is a word or group of words used as the name of a class of people,
places, or things, or of a specific person, place, or thing. Give examples
of a noun.

B. Motivation
Class, I have here a table on the board. Pick out the words that describe in
the four poems. One is done for you.
Poem Word that Describes
Song bountiful
The Sampaguita
A Tree, A Book
Soothing As Night Winds Are
What do you call the words in the second column of the chart? A noun
produces a picture in the mind. However, the picture produced is not clear.
There is no limit as to what can be pictured about the noun. To control the
image presented, adjectives are used.

C. Statement of the Aim

Today’s lesson is about adjectives. We will get to know how to use
appropriate adjectives to achieve emotional and sensory appeal in
expressing ideas.
D. Lesson Proper (Interaction)
What is an adjective? An adjective is a word describing noun. It is a word
that modifies, limits, or restricts a noun or a pronoun.

Comparatives and Superlatives

Adjectives change form when they are used in comparisons. To

compare two things, we can add –er to the adjective, or place the word
more or less before the adjective.
cleaner more/ less expensive
lovelier more/ less serious
To compare more than two things, we can add –est to the adjective,
or place the word most or least before the adjective.
cleanest most/ least expensive
loveliest most/ least intelligent
We add –er to short adjectives ( one or two syllables). We use more/less or
most/least with adjectives of more than two syllables.

Degrees of Irregular Adjectives

Positive Comparative Superlative

good better best

bad worse worst
little less least
many
some } more most
much

Change the adjective in parentheses into the comparative or superlative

degree.

Ram and Gerry are brothers. Ram is ____(old)_____ by two years

but he looks ___(young) __than Gerry. This is because Gerry is __(tall)__
In fact it is the ___(tall)___ in the family. Their other sibling
Is Diane who is the ___(old)___ . Of the three, she is the __(intelligent)_,
too. She got the ___(high)__ academic award when she graduated from
high school. Ram’s and Gerry’s school performance are very good, but
they are __(impressive)_ than Diane’s. All three love sports, too, but
Diane is the __(active)__ because for her, spending time on books is the
__(satisfying)__ activity of all.

Skill Building 4
Down with Double Comparatives and Superlatives
A double comparative or superlative uses both the –er or –est and
the word more or most together. You should avoid this.

Not: You seem more busier than I.

But: You seem busier than I.
Not: This is the most hottest day of the year.

Rewrite the sentences below so that the comparative and superlative forms
of adjectives are appropriate for formal usage.

1. Let’s use this bench. It looks more sturdier than the other bench.

compared.
perfect dead infinite
unique impossible

Not: He is the most unique comedian I know.

But: He is a unique comedian.
