IV Cannulation

Introduction –WIPPEP
 Wash hands This is one of those stations where
 Introduce yourself and confirm the patient’s name, age

 Exposure of the patient’s arm
 PUT ON GLOVES

Procedure:
 Ask the patient if they have any allergies (latex, alcohol etc.)
 Inspect for an appropriate vein
 Apply tourniquet 6 inches above the vein
 Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab in a circular motion from inside to outside and wait for at
least 30 seconds for the alcohol to dry and for the vein to fill with blood
o In the meantime, you can prepare a syringe and fill it with 5 ml normal saline
 Open the cannula packaging and remove the cap and sheath
 Warn the patient, then insert the cannula slowly at 45˚
 Once you see the flash back of blood, start to pull out the needle as you advance the cannula fully into the
vein
 With your other hand, release the tourniquet and apply pressure on the vein from above
 Quickly, remove the needle and throw it in the sharps bin. Then seal the cannula with the cap you
removed from before
 Secure the cannula with the sticky tape
 Attach the syringe to the port on the cannula from above and flush the cannula slowly, keeping an eye out
for any swelling around the cannula. Stop immediately if there is swelling or if the patient feels any pain.
 Finally, close the top port of the cannula.

Thank the patient and cover


Remove gloves and dispose of used equipment
Wash hands
