CITIZENSHIP AND NATIONALISM

A. Citizenship

• CITIZENSHIP
-The status of a citizen with its attendant rights, duties and privileges

• CITIZEN
- A person owing loyalty to and entitled by birth or naturalization to
the protection of a state or nation

 Who are Filipino Citizens?

1. Those who are citizens of the Philippines at the time of the adoption
of this Constitution;
2. Those whose fathers or mothers are citizens of the Philippines;
3. Those born before January 17, 1973, of Filipino mothers, who elect
Philippine Citizenship upon reaching the age of majority; and
4. Those who are naturalized in the accordance with law.

B. Philippines: a Nation?

 Nation

- refers to a community of people with shared culture, traditions, history,


and (usually) language, whether scattered or confined to one country

C. Nationalism

- a sense of identity with the nation. It is the belief that the members of
a nation share common interests that are different from the interests of other
nations and different from the interests of the human race as a whole.

Nation-building
- the process of structuring national identity. This includes development
of behaviors, values, language, institutions, and physical structures
that elucidate history and culture, concretize and protect the present,
and insure the future identity and independence of a nation

D. Citizenship Training

- instils an understanding that our contribution to a better life in our


country is through building better leaders.
- an important part of a person’s upbringing
- gives a sense of worth and also helps to understand one’s place in society
-positively identifies the roles of everyone in the society
Roles of Citizenship Training

 It aims to enhance our social responsibility and commitment to the


development of the community we belong to.
 It develops our ability to uphold law and order as we assume active
participation in the community activities.
 It trains us to assist members of the community especially in times of
emergency.
