1. General overview
The modular ballast box system is a free standing non penetrating roof top designed
for any kind of panel antenna, small radio link or other common telecom equipment.
The antenna mounting tube is fitted to one of the corners of the joined modules which
make it possible to place the antenna close to the edge of the building. This increases
coverage and may reduce the required height of the installation. All tubes and brackets
are made of anodized aluminum and the ballast box modules are made of galvanized
steel. This gives the system excellent corrosion resistance and a long life. A 3 mm
EPDM rubber sheet is placed under the ballast boxes to protect the roof from damage.
The module based ballast box system together with light weight aluminum
components makes the assembly extremely fast and easy. The flexibility of the system
allows a roof inclination of up to three degrees.

3. Technical data
3.1 Materials
The ballast box modules are made of Hot Dip Galvanized S235 Steel. Tubes and
brackets are made of age hardened aluminum and the surface is nature anodized in a
20 µm thick layer.
3.2 Performance
Depending of the height of the antenna mounting tube, number and size of antennas
and the wind speed the required ballast has to be calculated.
Antenna
Link
Height to center of
antenna load
Figure 7.
Example:
If for instance one antenna requires 20 kg of concrete ballast on a typical ballast system ,
but two antennas require 220kg, it may seem strange. However if the weight of the ballast
boxes is 180 kg, then the single antenna had a total of 200 kg of ballast weight and the
two antennas 400 kg total ballast weight. In other words you need double the ballast
weight if you double the antenna load.

Note! The concrete ballast weight can be reduced with the weight of the antenna mounting tubes (60 kg) and
antennas, if the total weight of the structure (center of gravity) is balanced (ie. the placement of the ballast
concrete can be used to balance the total weight of structure and make it possible to use the 'of centre parts' of the
structure as ballast weight )

The size and shape of the antenna determines the antenna load on the structure. In the
tables in chapter 3 the height to the midpoint of the attached antennas is requested.
Measure the distance from the roof to the middle of the attached antenna, and use that in
the ballast calculation table as the height of the antenna load. If there are two levels of
antennas/links, estimate where the middle of the combined antenna height is. When
rounding off the height, round off to the next higher half meter.

If the antennas are parallel you should simply ad those antenna areas together. If the
antennas are symmetrically oriented around the tube, then the reduced area in the table
can be used.
Total wind load area i.e. if NOT otherwise stated by data sheets
Panel antennas UMTS The total load area for links
1 x 1,3 m = 0,5 m2 1 x 0,7 m = 0,12 m2 1 x 0.3 m link = 0.20 m2
2 x 1,3 m = 0,8 m2 2 x 0,7 m = 0,2 m2 1 x 0.6 m link = 0.50 m2
3 x 1,3 m = 1,0 m2 3 x 0,7 m = 0,3 m2
1 x 2,6 m = 1,0 m2
2 x 2,6 m = 1,7 m2
3 x 2,6 m = 2,0 m2
Note: If a shorter antenna tube is wanted then the standard length, the tube can be cut
to desired height. Remember to measure the distance from the roof to the middle of
the antennas and follow the tables as usual.
