Introduction
In this Class we will be focusing on
quick geometry creation through the
creation of a Medical Cart.

We will focus on:

• Quick Sketching

• Working in a 2D cross section

• Using Pull, Move, and Combine

• Importing parts into a design

• And Edge Manipulation

Section One

Creating a Simple Assembly

Options
To begin we will change some
options. Go to the application menu
in the top left corner of the screen.
Once there select SpaceClaim
Options.

Go to the units tab and make sure


you are in Metric.

Then go to the advanced tab and


make sure that “Auto-extrude…”
and “Automatically calculate…” are
on. These will allow you to create
solids in section mode and power
select quicker.

Orient Sketch Grid


You will begin all SpaceClaim by
sketching on the top plane. To
sketch on the front click the select
new sketch plane button and then
click in the upper right hand corner
of the screen.

Plan View and Shortcuts


To view a heads up display click the
“Plan View” button. Notice that the
shortcut is “V”. Shortcuts will be
given in all of the tooltips. This is
located in the bottom right hand
corner of your sketch grid, or
located in the upper left region of
the ribbon tool bar.

Cylinder
The first thing we will sketch will be
a cylinder. Select “Cylinder” in the
upper right corner of the Ribbon
Bar.

Click once to start the cylinder.


Make the cylinder vertical and type
in a value of 400 for the height.

It will then look for a value for the


Circumference. Enter in a value of
280.

Spin, Pan, and Zoom


You’ve just created a solid and we
can see it in the structure tree on
the far left of the screen.

To view it easier we can spin, pan,


or zoom around our model. To spin,
hold down the Middle Mouse Button
(MMB). To pan, hold Shift+MMB.
To zoom, hold Ctrl+MMB.

Display Tab
To change the graphics or display of
your design, go to the “Display Tab”.
Here I like to turn “Fade Scene
Under Grid” off, and turn “Clip
Scene Above Grid” on. I encourage
you to play with these options to get
the graphics you prefer.

Orient View
Go Back to the “Design Tab” and
click “Plan View (V)”.

Cylinder
Now we will make another cylinder.

Start at the midpoint shown with the


triangle in the picture on the left.

Create a cylinder 1200 mm tall and


with a circumference of 100 mm.

Sketch vs. Section Mode


Now go to the rectangle sketch tool.

Start the sketch on the midpoint of


the axis.

Create a rectangle 700 mm by 100


mm.

After sketching the rectangle click


“Section Mode (X)” located in the
middle of the ribbon bar. Notice that
the sketch turned into a surface.
Now we will be able to start
sketching solids.

3D Direct Sketching
Create another rectangle to make a
keep out for a chair. Notice that you
now have three dimensions. The
dimension of “10” is the depth. This
depth will extrude both ways from
the sketch.

You can change the value if you


like, but once you click a second
time to complete the rectangle you
will get a solid as seen in the
structure tree below.

Orient View
Rotate the view to see the solid
you’ve created.

Click “Plan View (V)” after looking at


it to go back into a heads up view.

3D Direct Sketching
Create another rectangle for a tray.
We are still ball parking the design
so simply make a thin rectangle
starting within the last rectangle and
snap it to the edge of the cylinder.
Make the depth of this solid 600
mm.

Notice that we should now have


three solids and one surface in the
structure tree.

Section Edits
Select the “Split Face” tool and click
on the rightmost edge of the large
chair rectangle.

Select “Pull (P)”. Select the large


green line indicated in the middle
picture and pull it back to form an
“L”.

Note: In section mode the cross-


hatching is not selectable.

Cylinder
Select the “Cylinder” tool in the
upper right of the Ribbon bar.

Sketch a thin cylinder connecting


the chair to roughly the middle of the
surface indicated below.

Cylinder
Sketch another thin cylinder to
create a keep out for a robotic arm.
Start the sketch on the edge of the
tall cylinder.

Create a second cylinder at an


angle from the first one.

Sphere
Select the “Sphere” tool.

Starting from the intersection of the


two cylinders, make the sphere big
enough to encompass the entire
intersection.

Sketching Completed
Look at the structure tree. You
should have four solids and one
surface: a Chair, Tray, Stand, and
Arm.

3D Mode
Click “3D Mode (D)” button to bring
yourself out of the sketch.

Next select “Pull (P)” so we can start


to make edits to the geometry.

Pull Options
Zoom into the surface below the
Chair shaped solid.

Select on the surface and look at


the mini toolbar which appears
towards the upper right of the
selection.

The mini toolbar houses tools from


the options panel on the middle-left
of the screen.

Select the both ways option to


stretch the surface from the middle.

Pull and Undo


Thicken the surface into a solid by
holding the left mouse button down
and dragging in either direction.

Notice that most of the solids have


combined together and we only
have three solids in the structure
tree.

Click the “Undo” button (or Ctrl+Z) to


reverse that operation.

No Merge
Now also select the “No merge”
option on the left side of the screen.
This will allow all of our solids to
remain separate after the Pull is
finished.

Begin thickening the surface, and


type in 200mm for a thickness.

Notice the surface has been


extruded into a new solid.

Split Solid
Select the “Split Solid” button in the
upper left portion of the ribbon bar.

Click the green stand in the leftmost


picture, then select the top face of
the lower wide cylinder.

This will split that solid, about that


face. Notice that when a region
highlights in red SpaceClaim is
asking if you want to delete it.

Combine and Toolguides


Select the “Combine (I)” button next
to “Split Solid”. First, select the
green highlighted box in the bottom
left image.

Next, hold down the Ctrl key. Notice


that the toolguides in the upper right
of the screen switches from a saw
icon to a merge icon. This is
because “Combine” both merges
and splits geometry.

While holding the Ctrl key, select the


lower wide cylinder to merge the two
together into one solid. The new
solid will be highlighted.

Box Select
Click the “Select (S)” button in the
middle of the ribbon bar.

Box select all of the solids on screen


from upper left to lower right.

Next, Right Mouse Button (RMB) in


white space and pick “Move Each to
New Component”.

This will change the model from a


part to an assembly.

Display Tab and Color


Select an edge of the thin
rectangular tray.

Go to the third tab above the Ribbon


bar which is the “Display” tab. This
houses all graphics information.

Select the down arrow next to the


“Color” button directly below the
Display Tab.

Change the color of the tray to blue.

Note: You can change the color of


individual faces. This means that to
change the color of a solid, choose
the entire solid or the edge of a
solid.

Quick Access Toolbar (QAT)


Select the down arrow to the right of
the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).

Choose “Customize Quick Access


Toolbar” from the drop down list.

Adding to the QAT


Tools can be added from nearly any
part of the interface.

To add “Color” to the QAT, choose


commands from the “Style” area of
SpaceClaim.

Next select Color, click “Add”, and


then leave the options panel by
clicking OK.

Color
Select the top edge of the long thin
cylinder.

Select the down arrow on the


“Color” button in the QAT.

Change the color of the solid to


Red.

Use Split Solid, Combine, and


reordering of the structure tree to
make the four new components as
seen in the bottom images.

Note: Try to use faces on the solids


to split with before combining them
back together.

Replace Component
Select on the “Design” Tab above
the ribbon bar.

Right click on the Component


containing the Chair. This will most
likely be named Component1.

Select on “Replace Component…”


from the drop down list.

Opening Files
Sort file types by SolidWorks files.
Select “_office_chair.SLDASM” and
click open.

Note: If you do not have translators


there will be a SpaceClaim
Document with the same geometry
to open.

The office chair will replace the old


keep out in the assembly.

Hiding Components
Go to the structure tree and expand
“_office_chair” by clicking the “plus
box” next to it.

Then click the check box next to


“wheels” to hide the lower portion of
the imported assembly.

Replace Component
Right click on the component
housing the arm on the top right of
the assembly.

Most likely this will be Component3.

Select “Replace Component…” from


the drop down list.

Opening Files
Sort the file types by Pro/E files.
Select “_tmnt83972.asm.1” and click
open.

Note: If you do not have translators


there will be a SpaceClaim
Document with the same geometry
to open.

A new robotic arm should be


imported.

Temporary Axis
Select the “Pull (P)” button in the
middle of the ribbon bar.

Highlight over the red cylinder. This


will make a temporary axis appear
through the cylinder.

Click the axis when it appears.

Pull Toolguides
Select the “Pull Direction (Alt+click)”
toolguide on the right side of the
screen.

Select the blue edge indicated in the


picture below to set a new pull
direction.

Select the both ways option from the


mini toolbar when it appears or
select it from the options panel

Pull Axis
Start to Pull the axis and watch the
cylinder begin to pull into a solid
slot.

While pulling, hit Spacebar to freeze


the action.

Type in 240 and hit enter.

Slot Association
Select on the face of the slot
indicated below.

Drag the face out and watch all of


the faces expand and keep the
shape of the slot.

Hit the escape key to cancel that


operation.

Remove Association
Select on the face of the slot again
and right click. You should see at
the top of the list an option to
remove the slot association.

Now click on the same face as


before and pull it one way or the
next.

Take note of the different behavior


before hitting the escape key to
again cancel the operation.

Split Face
Select the “Split Face” button in the
upper right of the ribbon bar.

Select the top face of the slot.

Select the bottom toolguide on the


right of the screen which looks like a
saw.

Select the full round on the slot to


split the top face and make a circle
on top of the model.

Select the larger region of the top
face.

Next select the other full round to


make a second circle on top of the
model.

You should be able to select


through the model without rotating
around to the other side.

Select the “Pull (P)” button and


select on the region indicated in the
bottom right image.

Pull to Cut Material


Drag that middle face down 550mm.
Remember you can type a
dimension in at any time, or hit
spacebar to freeze your current
action.

After pulling it down rotate the


model close the image to the right.

Pull Copy
Hold Ctrl as you pull the selected
face up to copy it just like you would
hold Ctrl to copy text in Microsoft
Word.

Copy it up 200mm.

After copying it up, thicken it 20mm.

After thickening, copy the upper


surface up again 250mm.

Thicken the second surface 20mm.

Combine Solids
Notice you now have two additional
solids in the structure tree.

Select the “Combine (I)” button and


click on the red solid.

Hold Ctrl and click the two green


solids.

There should now be no additional


solids in the structure tree as they
were combined onto the stand.

Assemble Components
Click the “Select (S)” button.

Click the Green axis through the


mount of the arm (1).

Hold Ctrl and select on the red axis


through the stand (2).

Click the “Center” button in the top


right of the ribbon bar to assemble
the components.

Move Components
Select the “Move (M)” button and
click “_tmnt83972” in the structure
tree.

Select on the blue arrow and move


the entire component into place
between the mounts.

Selection
Select the “Pull (P)” button.

Double click the cylindrical surface


on the red solid.

This will select all faces that are


tangent.

Up To Toolguide
Drag the solid larger and smaller to
see how the geometry adapts.

Select the “Up To” toolguide which


is the lowest on the right-hand side
of the screen.

Select the inner cylindrical face of


the mount indicated in the middle
picture to snap the geometry into
place.

Note: To help select through the


model use the scroll wheel to make
your selection move through the
model.

Round Edges
Select the red edge in the image to
the right.

Pull the edge inward to create a


round.

A round is the default way to


manipulate an edge.

Click “Undo” or (Ctrl+Z) to remove


the round.

Copy Faces
Select the third edge option in the
Options panel on the left of the
screen. This will extrude the edge
into a surface when you pull it down.

After pulling the edge down, select


on the newly created surface and
thicken it into a solid as seen below.

Structure Tree
You should now see a new solid in
the top level of the structure tree.
When geometry is created it is
placed into the active component.

Right Click on “Design1” and then


click “New Component” from the
dropdown list. Component6 should
be created.

Right Click on “Component6” and


then select “Rename” from the
dropdown list. Rename the
component “Monitor”.

Drag and Drop Components


Drag the solid below Design1 into
Monitor.

If you expand monitor you should


now see a solid there.

Select on the edge indicated in the


picture and choose the fourth edge
option from the mini toolbar, or the
options panel.

This option copies edges and will


split a face to create a new region.

Edge Manipulation
Copy the edge about half way in by
clicking and dragging your cursor to
the right.

Select on the region indicated to the


right.

Pull the face up about this high.

Tab between Arrows


Select on the two edges. To select
multiple objects remember to hold
the Ctrl key.

Notice that there are two arrows. To


change the direction of the arrow
you can press the Tab key to switch
between them. You can also select
on the arrows to Pull them in a
particular direction.

Edge Manipulation
Drag the edges outward. Notice
that if it cannot copy the edges into
a face it will create a new surface.

You should have a surface and a


solid in the structure tree.

Pull Multiple Faces


Hold the ctrl key and select on the
two surfaces and the front face of
the green solid.

Thicken these three surfaces and


notice that they all merge together
into one solid.

Copy Edges
Double click on the edge indicated
with the Pull icon. This will select an
entire loop of edges.

While still in the copy edge option,


drag the edges inwards to create an
offset.

Pull to Cut a Depression


Select on the inner region shown to
the right.

Pull the face inwards to make a


depression in the solid.

Color Faces
With that face still selected, click the
down arrow next to the “Color”
button in the QAT.

Choose the black color from the


Basic Colors palette.

Note: Remember that the actual


"Color" Button is on the Display Tab.

Activate Components
“Monitor” should be the active
component in the structure tree. In
SpaceClaim you can only make
edits to the active component.

Right click on “Design1” and choose


“Activate Component”.

“Design1” will now be bold and you


can make edits to any of the
components.

Section Mode
Select on the top face of the blue
solid indicated below.

Click the “Section Mode (X)” button.


You will now be able to make edits
in a 2D cross section.

Section vs. 3D
In Section mode there are a few
things to keep in mind:

Note: The cross hatching will not be


selectable.

A line in section mode represents a


face in 3D.

A point, or vertex, in section mode


represents an edge in 3D.

Select on a point as indicated on the


right and also make sure the round
option is highlighted.

Powerselect
In the structure tree there are tabs
below it.

Click on the Selection tab. This


helps you select similar geometry on
the model.

With the vertex still selected click


“Edges with the same length” or
click the magnifying glass to select
search for more results.

With all four corners are selected,


round them.

Click on the Structure tab again to


view the assembly.

Bend
Click the “Bend (B)” button in the
upper right corner of the sketch
group.

Select on the front edge of the blue


solid and drag it out from a straight
line into an arc.

Edge Manipulation
Click the “3D Mode (D)” button to
exit the section.

Double click the indicated edge to


get the entire edge loop.

Choose the fourth edge option to


copy the edges into the face.

Drag the loop inwards as indicated


below.

Pivot Edges
Double click the outer edge again
and choose the fourth edge option
which is Pivot.

Pivot allows you to translate the


edges in space and have the rest of
the geometry update.

Drag the edges along the down


arrows about half way down the
solid to get the model shown below.

Note: Remember you can tab


between multiple arrows.

Round Edges
Double click both edge loops
indicated as you hold the ctrl key to
select both loops.

Select the round option from the


mini toolbar to round both edge
loops at the same time.

Open Component in Separate Window


Right click on the green solid below
the red stand.

Click “Open Component” from the


dropdown list.

Notice that the solid opens up in its


own window and there are two tabs
at the lower left hand corner of the
design window.

Insert Plane
Click on the axis running through
the cylinder.

Select the “Plane” button on the


upper right section of the ribbon bar.

This will place a plane through the


axis, usually in a front or right
orientation.

Insert Plane with Direction


Select the axis and ctrl select the
end of the rectangular protrusion.

Select the “Plane” button. This will


place a plane through the axis,

Combine to Split
Select the “Combine (I)” button.
Click the green solid.

Notice that the Saw toolguide on the

highlighted. It now wants you to
select a cutter.

to cut the solid with the plane.

Delete Planes
Select the two planes in the
structure tree, or the design window
while holding the ctrl key.

Press the delete key on the


keyboard to remove them from your

Move Solids
Select the “Move (M)” tool and
select on a solid from the structure

the green move vector.

Move it out 300mm.

Move Solids
Select the other solid in the
structure tree.

Move that solid away from the other,

Copy Surface
Select the face indicated in the
image to the right.

Hold ctrl and move that face along


the blue arrow 300mm.

Holding ctrl will copy the face just


like copying text in Microsoft Word.

You should now have two solids and


a surface in the structure tree.

Edit Surface

Blend between Faces


Select the “Pull (P)” tool.
