homemade instruments — guaranteed to get every toe tapping, with no special skills or
abilities required!
In the end, it’s kindness that guides us in so many of our interactions with the people,
animals, and world around us. With 100 easy things to do and say, Be Kind (page 2) helps

Make Music!
Norma Jean Haynes, Ann Sayre Wiseman, and John Langstaff
Music is a universal language — and you don’t have to be a trained musician to
speak it. Make Music! invites kids and families to celebrate the joy of sound with
a variety of inventive activities that make the pleasures of creating music accessible
to kids of all ages and abilities, with no prior musical experience required.
Drawing on our intuitive attraction to rhythm and melody and focusing on the
playfulness and spontaneity that music inspires, the book encourages kids to
explore beats with clapping, body drumming, and intonations. They learn to create
“found sounds” with kitchen pots and pans, the Sunday paper, or even the Velcro on
their sneakers. And step-by-step instructions show how to make 35 different
instruments, from chimes and bucket drums to a comb kazoo and a milk carton
guitar. Lively photos of kids in action bring the irrepressible delight of making
music to life.
