Magical Mishaps 
The price of playing with eldritch power 
 
Everyone makes mistakes, and when you’re playing with the very fabric of the universe, 
sometimes those mistakes have surprising, harmful, or spectacular consequences. Use 
these tables for wild magic surges, effects of casting in an area that crackles with 
magical energy, or any other situation you see ퟷ�t. Two tables of 100 effects each are 
provided, and cheat sheets for relevant monsters and spells are also included. Note that 
the spells are abbreviated for their inclusion here as chaotic side effects, and do not 
necessarily re៹�ect how they would behave when cast intentionally and with care. 
 
Magical Mishaps I 
 
1. Roll on this table every round for 1 minute  51. Spectral shield, +2 AC, no magic missile for 1 minute

12. Target is cocooned in crystal until someone breaks it  62. Grass instantly sprouts to 3’ tall within 20’, 1 minute

38. Caster and target ៹�ung 10’ in opposite directions  88. Large ៹�oating eye follows caster for 1 hour 
39. Regain 2d10 HP  89. Become invisible/silent for 1 minute or till atk/cast 
40. Gravity reverses in 30’ radius till start of next turn  90. Caster’s INT and STR swap for 1 hour 
41. Become potted plant until start of next turn  91. If you die in next minute, come back per reincarnate 
42. Caster distracted by cloud of gnats for next minute  92. Caster sees everyone as a decaying corpse for 24h 
43. For next minute, teleport up to 20’ as bonus action  93. Size increases by 1 size category for 1 minute 
44. Spell ricochets off target to random creature in 30’  94. All ퟷ�res within 60’ radius extinguished 
45. Cast levitate on self  95. You and all in 30’: vulnerable to piercing dmg, 1 min. 
46. Caster’s money cycles: CP -> SP -> GP -> CP  96. Caster becomes frightened of a color for 1 hour 
47. Unicorn appears within 5’ for next minute  97. Surrounded by faint ethereal music for 1 minute 
48. One of target’s eyes replaced by 500 GP sapphire  98. Caster suffers a head cold for 24 hours 
49. Cannot speak, emit pink bubbles instead  99. Regain all expended Sorcery Points 
50. Smoke fumes from caster’s ears for 1 minute  100. Next phrase spoken by caster becomes true 
 
Magical Mishaps II 
 
1. Roll two more times. All effects happen at once.  51. A terrible stench suffuses the area in 50’ radius 
2. Wall of force appears in front of caster  52. Sustained harmonious chord plays, audible 500’ rad 
3. Caster smells like a skunk for duration of spell  53. Caster gains 8 temporary hit points 
4. Caster’s hair grows one foot in length  54. Spell deals maximum possible damage, if applicable 
5. Caster drops one size category for 1 hour  55. Ground shoots up in spikes to surround the caster 
6. Wall of Fire encircles caster  56. Spell’s duration is doubled, if applicable 
7. Caster suffers same spell effect as target  57. Spell ퟷ�res in random direction if range is not Touch 
8. Caster blinded and invisible for one minute  58. Caster grappled by spectral tentacle for 1d4 rounds 
9. Caster’s eyes glow like lanterns for 24 hours  59. Target’s teeth fall out 
10. Whirlwinds whip around caster until next turn  60. Target is petriퟷ�ed for 1d4 rounds 
11. Spell functions, any applicable saving throw auto-fail  61. Any ferrous material on target immediately corrodes 
12. Spell fails but it and spent slot are retained  62. 5’ radius of caster air turns to water, splashes down 
13. Spell appears to fail but occurs 1d4 rounds later  63. Caster’s arms fade into the Ethereal for 1d4 rounds

snuff out a candle, torch, or campퟷ�re.  immune to all dmg, can’t be dispelled by dispel magic. 
  Also blocks ethereal travel. Disintegrate destroys it.  
Entangle: 90’ range, 20’ square: Plants cause di៛�cult 
terrain. Creature in area when cast makes Str save else 
Restrained. Str check vs. spell save DC frees the 
creature. 
 
Fireball: 150’ range, 20’ rad sphere. 8d6 ퟷ�re dmg, Dex 
save for half damage. 
 
Fly: Touch range, 10 min. Target gains 60’ ៹�y speed.
