Kasabay nito, sinabi ni Pangulong
Aquino na patuloy ang kanyang administra-
syon sa pagbibigay ng suporta sa mga guro
nang sa gayon ay lalo pang mapalakas ang
kalidad ng edukasyon sa ating bansa.
Bagama’t maraming suliranin ang

ministrasyon sa larangan ng edukasyon
ay ipinangako naman ng pangulo na
hindi magbubulag-bulagan ang kanyang
pamunuan nang sa gayon ay mabigyan

ng edukasyon sa ating bansa.
Sabi pa nga pangulo, ang mga guro
ang nagsisilbing gabay upang maging
wasto ang desisyon sa buhay ng mga
mag-aaral at edukasyon din ang sisiguro
sa magandang kinabukasan ng mga
kabataan.
Naging masaya rin ang pagbibigay
ni P.Noy ng talumpati sa harap ng mga
guro kung saan ay nagawa pa nitong
magbigay ng “joke” tungkol sa dalawang
estudiyante na nagtatalo at sa kanilang
guro.
Inalala rin ng pangulo ang kanyang
mga naging guro kung saan ay nag-
pasalamat ito sa mga naitulong sa kanya
ng mga ito at bilang pagtanaw ay sinabi
nito na kung hindi dahil sa kanyang
mga naging teacher ay hindi niya ma-
pupuntahan ang kanyang kinalalagyan
sa ngayon.
Sa ipinakitang ito ni Pangulong
Aquino, tiyak na makakaasa ang mga
guro na lalo pang mapapalakas ang
kalidad ng edukasyon sa ating bansa at
ang tiyak na makikinabang dito ay ang
mga mag-aaral.
Kasabay nito, hiniling din ng pangulo
sa mga guro na ipagpatuloy ang magan-
dang nasimulan ng mga ito dahil sila ang
siyang nagiging ikalawang magulang ng
kanilang mga nagiging estudiyante.

Virgin Mary to the three children. Each message has three
distinct parts.
The first secret was a vision of Hell where it was described
as an ocean of fire where demons and souls “in human form,
like transparent burning embers…are floating in the conflagra-
tion…amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair.”
In the second secret, the Blessed Virgin said that World
War I which was then raging in Europe was about to end
and it did end on Nov. 11, 1918, but the Blessed Mother
also made a shocking revelation that another war, more
devastating would break out “should men continue of-
fending God.”
There were 37 million casualties in World War I.
As told by the Blessed Virgin, World War II broke out
on Sept. 1, 1939 when Germany under Adolf Hitler invaded
Poland. But earlier on Sept. 13, 1931, Japan invaded Manchu-
ria that started the China-Japan conflict before the Pacific
War erupted when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii
on Dec. 7, 1941, followed by an attack on the Philippines on
Dec. 8, 1941.
World War II ended in Europe on Aug. 14, 1945 with the
victory of the Allied Forces over Germany, while the Pacific
War ended when Japan surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945 after
the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima
and Nagasaki, the first and only time so far a nuclear bomb
was used in a war.
More than 60 million people were killed in the Second
War War.
The world was shaken when a Turkish gunman Mehmet
Ali Agca shot and wounded Pope John Paul II at St. Peter’s
Square in the Vatican on May 13, 1981. The Holy Father
sustained four gunshot wounds but miraculously survived
which the Pope claimed that his survival was through the
intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Incidentally, the incident took place during the 64th an-
niversary celebration of the Fatima apparition. Years later, the
Pope visited Agca in his prison cell and in a massive display
of humility forgave him for his crime.
It may be recalled that in 1989, the world was further
stunned when the once powerful Soviet Union collapsed due to

The materials for painting were not allowed to be
brought inside. The jail guards flatly told them such
materials are banned.
The eight-page handout for poetry, meanwhile, was
read. The jail guards took out Gelacio Guillermo’s poem
entitled “Kokak” from the copies. “Kokak,” a scath-
ing criticism of the policies of then President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo, is one of the poems cited as example
in the module.
Despite having shown the permit from BJMP-NCR
regional director Serafin Barretto, the jail warden did
not allow the workshop to happen, Artist Arrest said in
a statement.
The artists just gave out copies of the handouts to the
women detainees.
“The module on basic poetry workshop can be read
even from textbooks for high school students. How would
elements of poetry, figures of speech and idioms pass
as subversive documents?” Mark Angeles, a member of
Kilometer 64 and a Palanca awardee who prepared the
handout, said.
“If they suppress these materials, how much more
do they repress the grievances of the detainees? Do they
intend to detain the right to free speech and expression?”
Angeles added. “It is a direct violation of the rights of
detainees.”
Later, five members of the group of artists went to see
the male detainees at the high-risk detention facility. They
were subjected to strip search.
All handouts were confiscated. “These documents are
not allowed here,” they were told.
The artists were held in a room for 30 minutes. Their
photographs were taken, their identification cards were
scanned. They were interrogated by a jail officer whose
surname is Mutya. “We were asked all kinds of ques-
tions – who is our leader, where do we live, our school
or workplace, etc. Then he said we will be investigated,”
Angeles said.
The painting workshop was allowed at the male deten-
tion facility but it only lasted for 30 minutes.
Angeles said they just asked the detainees to write a
poem. “Poetry is the written soul of the poet. It cannot be

fare increase
THE government’s plan
to increase the Metro Rail
Transit (MRT) and Light Rail
Transit (LRT) fares has been
deferred for another month
pending the conduct of public
consultations.
Presidential Deputy
Spokesperson Abigail Valte,
in a press briefing at Mala-
canang yesterday, however,
said the fare increase is long
overdue.
She assures, nonetheless,
that the move will benefit the
riding public in terms of im-
proved services, new coaches
and more trains.
The Department of Trans-
portation and Communica-
tions (DOTC) had earlier pro-
posed to slash the government
subsidy for the transportation
system by hiking fares starting
this month.

GMA appears before
the Ombudsman
FORMER president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo personally appeared before the prosecutors of the Department
of Justice (DOJ) yesterday in connection with the plunder charges filed
against her in connection with the sale of the old Iloilo airport to the
tune of P1.2 billion.
Rep. Arroyo was accompanied by her legal counsel, former DOJ
Secretary and erstwhile Solicitor General Estelito Mendoza.
In her counter-affidavit, Arroyo, through her legal counsel, said that
she should not be charged with plunder before the DOJ.
Arroyo argued that what she only did was that she issued an Execu-
tive Order related to the sale of the old Iloilo airport.
She stressed that she was not a participant to the actual negotiation
for the sale of the said airport.
The respondent noted that it was a sale undertaken by the government,
hence, it was exempted from the payment of capital gains tax.
Arroyo signed and executed her counter-affidavit before the DOJ
prosecutors led by Senior State Prosecutor Peter Ong.
On the other hand, Mendoza questioned the jurisdiction of the DOJ
over the case, saying that the proper venue should be the Office of the
Ombudsman.
Aside from Arroyo, other respondents are former Executive Secretary
and now Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Alberto Romulo
and former Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Margarito Teves.
The criminal complaint for plunder was earlier filed by Danilo Dilay-
dilay, president of the Philippine Association of Revenue Informers.

DPWH adopts stricter policy on road safety

THE Department of Public
Works and Highways (DPWH)
wants to minimize, if not elimi-
nate, traffic congestion and ac-
cidents caused by loading and
unloading of passengers within
the carriageway.
The DPWH has recently issued
new guidelines for the design of
turnouts (loading and unloading
bay) along national roads.
Under Department Order No.
44, DPWH Secretary Rogelio
Singson specifically instructed that
turnouts or loading and unload-
ing bay should be placed outside
the carriageway and should be
sufficiently long to accommodate
the maximum number of vehicles
expected to occupy the space at
one time.
The required length of the
turnout will be determined con-
sidering the length of 15 meters
for each bus and eight meters for
a jeepney or car.
The width of the turnout will
be three meters for roads served
only by jeepneys and cars and 3.6
meters for roads with buses but
not wider than five meters.
Turnouts should not be
placed on or adjacent to hori-
zontal and vertical curves that
limit the sight distance in either
direction.

Filipinos want Aquino to prioritize jobs

in the days ahead, according to
a nationwide survey conducted
by the Philippine Information
Agency (PIA).
“The survey shows what the
people want the President to do
in the days ahead. Jobs and liveli-
hood programs for themselves and
their families are their real and
immediate concerns,” Presidential
Communication Operations Of-
fice (PCOO) Secretary Herminio
"Sonny" Coloma disclosed on
Tuesday.
The PIA survey was conducted
from Sept. 28-29 and involved face-
to-face interviews with 629 sectoral
leaders, including elected officials,
businessmen, religious, mass media,
and the uniformed services.
Of those polled, 78 percent said
jobs and livelihood should be on
top of the government’s priority
list, while 66 percent considered
the fight against corruption as of
utmost importance.
More than half (59 percent)
of the respondents also urged
the administration to improve
access to quality education even
as almost the same number (57
percent) recommended the imple-
mentation of measures that will
control the spiralling prices of
basic goods.
DOLE stops PAL crew’s planned strike
THE planned strike of the Flight
Attendants and Stewards Association of
the Philippines (FASAP) will not push
through as the Department of Labor
and Employment (DOLE) has barred
them from doing so.
This development came after
DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz
issued yesterday an assumption of
jurisdiction (AOJ) order on the labor
dispute between the flight attendants'
union and the Philippine Airlines
(PAL) management, prohibiting the
FASAP from proceeding with the
work stoppage.
“If the cabin crew will go on work
stoppage as planned, it will be consid-
ered as an illegal strike since I have
already assumed over the PAL labor
dispute,” she said.
Baldoz warned that under the law,
workers who would be found guilty
of mounting an illegal strike can lose
their job.

Customs employee killed
in railroad mishap in Taguig
THE body of a Bureau of Customs employee was cut in half after his car
was smashed by a speeding train of the Philippine National Railways in Taguig
City Tuesday night.
Police identified the fatality as Richard Yusta, of Purok 6-C Bagong Bayan,
South Daang Hari, Taguig an employee of the Customs bureau and assigned
at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
Yusta, 40, was driving his car, a Nissan Sedan with plate number PSY-858,
along Manalac Avenue, Barangay Tanyag around 7:45 p.m., when rammed by
