ME6194 (#36334): Advanced CAE Simulation (with Ansys)

• This is neither an ANSYS training class nor an FE theory class; it is a

course in modeling of structural, kinematic and dynamic problems
• This is an ADVANCED class, not for casual interest
• Pre-Requisites:
–ME 5139; BSME/BSAE (concurrent registration in 5139 & 6194 not allowed)
–You are expected to know linear static analysis in a commercial FEA package.
If you have never used ANSYS, you will need to bring yourself up to speed on
your own within the first 2 weeks.
• Meeting times:
– Lecture Tues 4:10 – 6:00 pm (Scott N050);
– Lab Thurs 4:10 – 6:00 pm (Scott W280);
– Recitation (optional) Fri 9-11 am W260 (TA will be present)
• Office Hours:
– Prof. Shah (E343; shah.493@osu.edu) T, Th 3-4 pm; 6-7 pm
– TA Siripurapu, Sundeep; siripurapu.4@buckeyemail.osu.edu TBD
• Books:
• There are many great books on FE theoryhard to find books on FE practice.
• For this class consider the PPT lecture notes on Carmen as the textbook (T-
theory; P=Practice)
• Grading:
– HW+Lab assignments: 60% (Weekly hands-on lab assignments)
– Exams: 40% (Two exams)

ME6194: Top 10 Reasons

Top 5 reasons to take this class:
1: FE simulation job skill is in demand by engineering companies
2: Simulation = Virtual prototyping; make your design come to life
without building it
3: Simulation allows you to explore many design alternatives
4: Reinforce your understanding of structural mechanics: statics, rigid
dynamics, stress analysis, material behavior and vibrations
5: This is how all design will be done in the future to minimize trial and
error

Top 5 reasons NOT to take this class:

1: Requires much more time than an average graduate class
2: Lack of prior experience with commercial FEA packages
3: Weak background in structural mechanics and numerical methods
4: Structural design and analysis are not your major areas of interest
5: The Instructors grading standards are high

Course Format
• Lectures
̶ Tuesday Lectures will cover FEA fundamentals
̶ Lectures will be software agnostic
̶ Lecture notes will be labelled (T#) where # designates Week of the semester
̶ Lecture notes will be posted online one day prior to class (Monday pm)

• Labs
̶ Thursday labs will cover software specific tools through guided tutorials and
demos
̶ Students are expected to complete these exercises in real time (they will not be
available after class)
̶ Lab demos will cover all software tools potentially needed to complete weekly
lab assignments
̶ Lab notes will be software specific and labelled P#; available for download just
before the lab (~ 3 pm Thurs)

• Weekly assignments
̶ Each week a simulation problem will be assigned
̶ Get assignment from Canvas/Carmen
̶ All labs must be done individually; copying any part of the model from others will
result in automatic E grade and dismissal from class
̶ Assignments will be due 1 week from date of posting; bring report to lab; include
info on location of model files (name folder lab1, lab2, etc)
– Work must be auditable; follow the format designated

Introduction to FEM
There are many commercial FEA packages that provide similar capabilities
but differ in terminology and GUI

• Leading FE packages for

structural analyses are
MSC/Nastran, ABAQUS,
IDEAS, ANSYS,…
• In mainstream areas of
analyses, they all have
similar capabilities
• There are major
differences in pre-
processing (CAD
geometry modification &
meshing)
• Many vendors have ANSYS Workbench GUI
started offering two
levels of pkgs: one for
novices and one for
professionals

modifying geometry to prepare the
solid model for use in Simulation
(SpaceClaim has also been added but
we will not use it)

• Simulation for structural & thermal

analyses (Model, Setup, etc)

• Meshing for specialized meshing

• DesignXplorer for optimization

• FE Modeler for translating NASTRAN

Analysis types available in WB Mechanical (ME related):
• Structural (static and transient):
Linear Stress, Nonlinear Structural to account for large
deflection effects, plasticity and contact nonlinearities.
• Heat Transfer (steady state and transient):
Solve for temperature field and heat flux. Temperature-
dependent conductivity and convection allowed. Thermal-
stress analysis supported as well.
• Shape Optimization:
Used for possible volume reduction based on load paths
through the part using Topological Optimization technology.

• Modal: Determines natural frequencies of a system (free vibration),

including effects of loading on a pre-stressed structure.
• Euler Buckling: Determines failure load or safety
factor for buckling and its buckling mode shapes.

• Dynamics:
–Flexible Dynamics to study the effects of time varying loads on a structure.
–Random Vibration Analysis to study the response of a structure to vibration loads
that are random in nature
• Kinematics & Rigid Dynamics to determine the disp, velocity, acceleration and
forces of an assembly of rigid bodies linked by joints and springs.
