From The Teachers
We will administer the district-wide
AIMSweb screeners for both reading and math this
week. These are given to all students in the district
3 times per year (fall, winter and spring). They are
used to identify students who qualify for additional
support and as one tool to track student growth
throughout the year. The math portion consists of 2
assessments that are given whole group and take 8
minutes each. One of the reading assessments is
given individually and takes more class time to
administer. We are looking forward to completing
these and starting our small group reading
instruction.
Book orders are due this Wednesday.

You will be receiving information on how to
sign up for parent/teacher conferences this week.
We use signupgenius.com to schedule conferences
and find that electronically signing up is generally
easiest. Paper copies will also be sent home. We
look forward to meeting with you soon!

Social Studies/Science
We continue to identify variables that effect
the distance our paper airplanes travel in science.
Changing one variable at a time and examining the
results is a fun activity you can also do at home.
Social studies instruction will focus on our
constitution this week as we answer the questions:
why we have it and how it functions for citizens.
This will connect to our field trip to The Capitol
Building and Historical Museum in early November.
Math
Identifying and applying useful strategies
for solving computation problems and making
reasonable estimates will be covered this week.
Subtracting across zeros is another
concept we will be working on. This can be a tricky
concept for some kids to master and takes patience
and practice for everyone involved in the process.
Please let us know if homework is too hard
or too easy for your child.
Reading
Spelling groups will begin this week.
Spelling words will vary from student to student and
can be found inside the weekly planner that comes
home each night with homework assignments and
a place for your signature.
Reading groups will begin next week.
We will begin Unit 1, week 2 of our
Reading Street Reading program this week.
Students will read about the expedition of Lewis
and Clark from the point of view of a dog that made
the journey. Our focal comprehension strategy this
week is using the author’s purpose to interpret the
text.
