Communication between them is made
through the fiber-optic cables.
In optical data transfer, digital information is
converted into a series of light pulses and
launched into the fiber-optic cable.
The advantage of fiber-optic technology
over the use of metal wires is that the
optical data flow is immune to the influence

Fiber-Optic Cable Handling

The fiber-optic cables

must be handled with
extreme care.

• Do not crush the fiber-optic cable.

• Do not kink or bend the fiber-optic cable
to a radius of less than 1 inch (25 mm).
• Do not remove the protective cap from
the end of the fiber-optic cable until just
before installation. SSP274/130

Self-Diagnosis
The Vehicle Diagnosis, Test and Information
System VAS 5051 provides the operating
modes:
• Guided fault-finding
• Vehicle self-diagnosis
The “Guided fault-finding” mode tests
all control modules installed on a particular
vehicle to find error entries. It also
automatically compiles an individual test
plan from the results.
Technicians can also compile their own
test plans. Using function and component
selection, the tests selected are included
in the test plan and can be completed in
any order during the remainder of the
diagnosis procedure.
