Lesson 1: All About Committees

Where are committees used?

As previously noted, committees are dynamic and applicable to multiple settings. This means
that whether you are at university, in the workplace or are volunteering, it is likely that you will join or
be responsible to a committee that works in a particular way, and follows a certain set of
procedures. Let’s consider a few examples:

University Clubs & Societies

University committees are responsible for organising events, campaigns and other services to
students on campus. In accordance with Monash Student Association (MSA) Clubs & Societies
(C&S) Rules (6.2.2. xxxv), a club’s committee must meet at least 4 times each semester. This
ensures clubs and societies are spending a sufficient amount of time on planning and discussing
upcoming events and/or projects. At Monash University Clayton campus, there are over 100
registered non-sporting clubs and societies, each run by a committee. These clubs range from
academic and political to spiritual and special interest clubs.

The Commonwealth Parliament of Australia is just one of many workplaces that sets up committees
consisting of its employees. Parliamentary committees can be made up of only lower house
members (“House of Representative committees”), upper house members (“Senate committees”), or
both houses (“Joint committees”). The purpose of these committees is to allow members of
Parliament, as well as external stakeholders such as members of the public or interest groups, to
delve deeper into certain areas of policy, government administration and/or government
performance.

Not-for-profit Organisations

Not-for-profit organisations such as Amnesty International, Oxfam, World Vision, Red Cross and so
forth are likely to have boards and committees that are responsible for decision making within the
organisation.
Committee members may be liable under law for the actions of their organisation's volunteers and
workers. For information about some of the regulating guidelines for not-for-profit committees, check
out the ‘End of Module Additional Resources’.
