My name is Alba. I’m 43 years old and I’m a teacher. My school

children - two girls and a boy. We love travelling. Next month

r
we’re going to Greece again. We love it there. We’re going to

winter we’re going skiing in France. We always stay in the

Alba (A) same hotel.

e

My name is Bree and I’m 29. My husband Ken and I live in a big

m
city. We don’t have any children yet. I am a businesswoman
and I love my job. I often travel for my work. Sometimes this
Sa
makes me feel tired. However, it is always interesting to go to
new places. Next month I’m going to work in America for three
weeks. I’m excited because I have never been to America

Read the passage and answer all the questions.

Harrods
Harrods is one of the most famous department stores in the world. It was just a small
shop when Charles Harrod opened it in south London in 1834. It moved to
Knightsbridge in 1849 and is still there now.

r
pe
The shop grew quickly. Today there are over 330 departments on seven different

Pa
floors. The shop has 32 cafés and restaurants. The most popular department is the
Toy Kingdom. It sells some very big and expensive toys. The largest is a toy giraffe
which costs £3,299. The most expensive is a £10,000 car for children. About 100,000

e
pl
customers visit the store every day. This number goes up to 300,000 in the winter
before Christmas! Staff from over 50 countries work there.

m
Sa
Many people used to visit Harrods to see the wonderful pet shop. Until 1976, it sold
lions, elephants and other exotic animals. In 1967, a future president of the USA
bought an elephant. From 1976 to 2014, the pet shop sold cats, dogs and other pets,
ns

but it is now closed.

io
at

There are 12,000 light bulbs on the outside of the store. This began with its
Christmas lights in 1959, when they used 1,100 bulbs for decoration. Now the lights
in

are on all year but the best time to see them is at night and on winter afternoons.
