Poor Conditions and Services of the School Library

I am writing this report to draw your attention to the poor conditions and services of our school
library.
Firstly, the school librarians are rude and unhelpful. To quote just one example, when asked for
help in finding a book, a librarian responded to the student, “Find it yourself. Are you blind?”. My friend
felt insulted and surely, a librarian’s responsibility is to assist the students when books are concerned. The
books are often unorganized and left on the tables for days.

Secondly, the space of our library insufficient and its seating arrangement is inadequate as well.
Often enough, we will find more than 10 students cramped in a table meant for 6. Surely the students will
find themselves unable to focus and to read at ease. Furthermore, many of the tabletops are so deeply
scratched that it is difficult to write on them. To make things worse, some of the wooden chairs are too
broken for students to sit on. One of my friend was asked to compensate for a chair he had barely sat on by
the library teacher.

Thirdly, the media equipment in the library is faulty. As far as I know, the computer has been out-
of-order since last year and has not been repaired since. This has caused a trouble for the less fortunate
students as they do not have access to the internet less alone to use the printing services to print out their
assessment and findings. Besides, they couldn’t play any of the courseware CD available in the library as
CD players are also out-of order.

Finally, the collection of library books needs to be expanded and improved upon. Many of the books
are so old with torn or missing pages. The duration for returning a borrowed book should be revised and
extended as well. Some fictional books are thicker than another, weaker students may need more time to
digest and enjoy them better.

In my humble opinion, the books in the library should restored and wrapped with proper wrappers
to avoid any further damage. Extra funds should be allocated to the library to purchase new tables, chairs,
book shelves and air conditioning system.

One of the objectives of the library is to encourage reading among the students. As we all know,
reading can bring us anywhere, thus it is important for a student to have an ease access to a good reading
material apart from the classroom. I do hope that the conditions in our library can be improved in due time.

Yours Faithfully
