  Rainy Day Fund
Take a moment to reflect on your Villanova experience. Remember
all the great times cheering on the basketball team, going to the
Jersey shore and spring break with your roommates, and all those
enriching learning experiences, both inside and outside the
classroom?

Think how different your experience would have been if you could
not afford your books, a SEPTA ticket to an interview in the city –
or even a meal plan.

The Rainy Day Fund at Villanova University is a critical resource

that assists in equalizing the university experience for all students.
This past year, more than ever, a growing number of Villanova
students needed the support of the University community to
achieve their academic and career aspirations:

• A male student who was homeless did not have extra

money for books. The Rainy Day Fund bought his books
for the semester. He consequently donated them back to
the lending library administered by the Office of
Multicultural Affairs.

• A male student used his entire Financial Aid refund to pay

for his housing and, as a result, was not eating. Dining
Services funded half of his commuter meal plan, and the
Rainy Day Fund paid for the other half of his plan.

• A female honors student needed to purchase supplemental

supplies for one of her courses and went without it for
quite some time before her faculty advisor identified that
she was without the materials. The Rainy Day Fund
purchased her supplies, and she achieved great success in
the course.

• More than thirty students borrowed money in the form of

a book loan which, over time, they paid back either when
they raised the funds or after their financial aid refund
check was issued to them.

At last year’s event more than $10,000 was raised for a fund that
has frequently run on a balance of a few hundred dollars. But, the
Rainy Day Fund still needs support of the alumni of the Greater
Philadelphia Chapter.

  Make A Difference Fund
The Center for Multicultural Affairs knows that underrepresented
students enrolled in the University on scholarships often lack funds to
maximize the opportunities available to them outside of the classroom.

Money needed to study in other countries, to take part in national and

international service trips, or to offset unpaid internships and research
opportunities is simply not available. What once were thought to be
luxuries or extras have now become essential elements of the well-
rounded college graduate’s resume.

The modest financial position of our students means they are not able to
participate in these outstanding opportunities even when recommended
by a faculty member. This is a critical limiting factor for
underrepresented students in their educational and career development.

Providing students with a complete educational experience, rooted in the

Augustinian values of truth, unity, and love, is an important part of
Villanova’s educational mission. Doing so ensures that students are able
to mature physically, mentally, and emotionally in a nurturing but
challenging atmosphere. They emerge with minds and hearts
transformed, ready to face the challenges of a changing world.

The Make a Difference Fund was established to reduce the disparity that
results from the disadvantages presented above. This fund will help those
students covered by the mission of the Center for Multicultural Affairs.

The ultimate goal of the fund is to provide our students with all of the
opportunities their college peers experience without exclusions that result
from financial hardship.
