Try and do it without looking up answers and do it in the recommended time. If you are happy working
on screen, you can do these tasks straight into Word. If you prefer paper and pencil, do the task under
timed conditions and then type it into Word to upload it (without changing anything). We ask for it in
Word and not scanned in as then tutors can comment on things electronically.

Paper One Task One (6 marks) – recommended time 5 minutes

Provide the term for each definition.

Write your answers in your answer booklet. Provide only one answer per question.

a The degree to which items in a test reflect the essential aspects of the theory on which
the test is based, e.g. the relationship that can be demonstrated between a test of
communicative competence in a language and the theory of communicative competence.

b A unit of speech consisting minimally of one vowel and maximally of a vowel preceded by
a consonant or consonant cluster and followed by a consonant or consonant cluster, e.g.
book /bʊk/, I /aɪ/ or /mʌ/ in mother.

c Classroom practice that attempts to ensure that all students learn well, despite their
uniqueness, i.e. methods, objectives, activities, materials, timing etc. are geared to the
needs of individual learners, e.g. some learners are asked to write 8 sentences whereas
others need to write 5.

d An affix which is added to a root word to change its meaning or word class, but which
cannot stand on its own, e.g. driving, gladly, unstable.

e A word in one language which is similar in form and meaning to a word in another
language because both have the same origin, e.g. colección in Spanish and collection in
English or Bruder in German and brother in English.

f A technique for measuring overall language proficiency as well as reading

comprehension. Words are deleted from a reading text at regular intervals leaving blanks.
Learners then try to fill each gap with a word that fits the context.
