JAY DAITER - “A Successful Community Leader WORKING FOR YOU”

Important improvements were made in Nakina while serving on Council.


Improvements like the following were not the result of one person working alone.
They were made by a Mayor and 8 councillors working together as a team.
As a member of that team, I have acquired much experience .
This lists describes some of the benefits the Nakina Ward gained .
It was prepared to provide a variety of examples and is not a comprehensive list.

Handicapped accessibility changes made to the arena, ward office, & clinic

Financial and moral support for Nakina Kids ‘n Us Daycare

Supported and became a lead member of the Greenstone Recruitment and


Retention Team that was established for the recruiting doctors. Resulted in the
creation of the Greenstone Family Health Team (Municipal contribution of
$44,000)

Supported and attended informal Mayor’s breakfast meetings

Continue to sustain interest, education and advocating for economic opportunities


linked to The Ring of Fire

$600,000 grant from the Forest Sector Prosperity Fund to assist Nakina Forest Products mill

Acted as a test site for Superior Wireless and Northern Broadband Inc. during testing phase

Supported a loan to the Nakina Sno Club to purchase it’s own groomer (loan was never required) $27 000 grant was
successful from N.O.S.S.A

Personally worked with an interested businessperson from Terrace Bay to attract them into a needed restaurant
business.

Monitored the MTO regional office to pressure the restoration and completion of Highway 584

Lead and supported the formation a local Nakina Recreation Committee

Championed commercial airside lot development. 4500 square feet of commercial property is now available to
tenants this fall.

In Nov, 2004, first asked Council to identify the reconstruction of the 16 kilometers of highway 584, as their number
one priority (completed in fall of 2009)

Support for Nakina Bass Derby by relocating the boat launch area, leveling the beach area for the tents, running
power for the weigh-in and making the municipal tents available free of charge

Reducing the hours of operation of our arena resulting in cost savings and still allowing more than adequate
community access and use

Support and attendance at Appreciation Luncheons for municipal employees

As of this month, I’m helping to establish a base of volunteers to support transportation requirements for our seniors
through North of Superior Programs and with the help of the newly hired
N.O.S.P. coordinator

Co-chaired committee studying and making recommendations to Council


on fuelling matters at our two airports.

Provided support in preparing and acting as a reference for local Trillium


applications used successfully by Les Copains de Nakina ($40 800) (the
Legion application is pending)

Well-water protection & upgrades made to Nakina’s water treatment plant

Introduced to Council the consideration of a local preference purchasing policy


New play structures in Nakina and all communities

Introducing e-waste and hazardous waste recycling

Focus groups (how to strengthen our community) Nakina had highest turnout

Production of a tourism DVD and TV show portraying Nakina as part of Greenstone

Commercial lot development at Ruddick Airport (3 temporary lots) as the beginning


of an “Airside Business Park Development” with draft design for 62 more lots with a
new parallel taxiway.

Consistently argued and voted in support of keeping all of our Ward offices opened

Equipment support & training for our local volunteer fire fighters

Supported & influenced the decision to have the meeting here in Nakina, with Krech Ojard & Associates engineers
for the Far North Railway Project to the Ring of Fire

Engineering plans / design for airport expansion is underway

Ensuring financial support and in-kind support (municipal tents /set up and taking down for community functions
such as Canada Day, Spring Thaw, Winter Carnivals, Bass Derby & Corn Fest)

Advocated and supported ‘town – hall’ meetings (and will continue to do so)

Support for the local Emergency Medical /Ambulance Services

Nakina Medical Clinic remodeling, equipment, furniture and new carpet

New, continuous highway 584 from Nakina to Highway 11 (3 separate projects, 2 of which were Municipal)

Completing necessary water upgrades on Main Street

Served as “the municipal representative” on the committee established for the recruiting of medical personnel

Producing and circulating my newsletter at least 4 times a year (only councillor to produce one)

Introduced to Nakina and supported a “local advisory committee” in February, 2004 which ran longer than any other
ward. (Some wards never had one.)

Team member of 85 Anniversary Organizing committee who set up and maintained the 85 Anniversary website

Purchase of Nakina’s new fire truck / pumper $179,000

Investments in the Nakina Heritage Building, remodeling the restaurant area and kitchen, installation of new shingles
($50,000)

Electrical upgrades to arena facilities $8000

Initiated “Greenstone Matters” (a personal blog and Facebook) for residents and visitors to provide input and
comments)

Improved portal utilization (Nakina Fish & Game one of the best local, recent examples)

Supported the request from Nakina Heritage Corporation to transfer their Day Care services from Nakina to the
Municipality (approx. $70,000 annually)

Dedication of the Nakina Sports Complex in recognition of the late Reeve, Warren Hatchard.

Financial support for the “all season road” from Nakina to Martin Falls to better ensure the road artery to The Ring of
Fire, passes through Nakina

Served as a liason between the Municipality and the Kenogamisis Golf Club Executive (Sept, 2004-current)
Implemented a performance review process for the evaluation of all municipal employees

Ice rental rates throughout Greenstone for the 2004-2005 season, will be
unchanged from 2003-2004.

$1600 provided to the Senior’s Sunrise Club to support the installation of a


security system

Tagging Hwy 584 as The Ring of Fire Highway with supporting signage (to be
installed soon)

Assisted in attracting Optometrist services to Nakina

Pushed to bring internet broadband (my home was the one year pilot to test the
equipment) and continued the push with Bell to bring in the Sympatico services
introduced this past July

Implemented Enhanced 911 emergency services

Supporting the current French Club who has requested financial relief with the help of the municipality

Joined in many presentations to lobby Ministers on important municipal matters

Promotion of Nakina’s Community Events through councillor newsletter with a distribution on two portals, bulk
mailing and on councillor blog and Facebook

Support and push for improved digital cell phone service

Purchase of a new municipal ½ ton ($33,000)

Lobbied MPP with school board trustees to maintain local school and board in Nakina

Support to acquire land for local truck operators

Introduced residents to new government grants and subsidies through newsletter and blog website

Pavement restoration on Center Street (coming up the hill off Hwy 584), River Road ($216,000) Pending - Ontario,
Main, and Cordingly Lake Rd

Chaired Tourism Committee of Council since 2009. Hired tourism intern in June, and received $27,500 in a grant
application

Support for long-term capital funding forecasting and strategic planning (and will continue to do so)

Participated in “Effective Councillor Training” sessions

Prepared and lead presentations to Council:

a) Investing in The Nakina Heritage Building

b) GPS technology applications that especially will support tourism

c) Developing I.T. strategies to support Municipal efficiencies

Introduced and encouraged the opportunity for Nakina Heritage Corporation to become a local installer of broadband
services by employing local workers

Obtained major corporate sponsorship from TBayTel for 85 Anniversary

Invited to lead discussions in our schools during Local Government Week

New signage at Train Station, Hwy 584 and Well Water Protection.

New fence, signage at the cemetery

Municipality secured an additional $500 000 from FedNor to install additional broadband towers in some of the rural
areas of Greenstone
Supported training for clubs and organizations to promote their groups on the Community Portal

Free Business Toolkits supporting the Greenstone Marketplace

Support for a local Nakina walking trail

Supported and lobbied successfully for telehealth at the Nakina Clinic

3 successful ACAP projects for the Nakina airport:

a) snow plow/sander truck - 179,000,

b) Sand Storage Shed - $545,700.

c) Airport Runway Reconstruction - Just under $4 Million

Support for Nakina Air Service’s hangar and offices at E. Ruddick airport

Purchase of Nakina’s new rescue / response vehicle (will arrive shortly $65,000)

Replacement of Nakina’s old grader ($160,000)

Worked and liased with citizens and businesses to provide support for the restaurant

Generated successful LIC grants ($4400 and $4900) and produced the first marketing brochures of Greenstone
Snowmobile Loop. Support for 3 annual Greenstone Loop Poker Ralley’s

Helped organize routes for FAM (Familiarization) Snow Tour with broad publicity of our Greenstone Loop

Nakina had the best attendance in Greenstone during the “gap analysis” meetings due to good promotion and
community interest

Worked on Public Services committee to develop a 5 year municipal road reconstruction plan

Support for 6 volunteer fire departments

Member of Municipal Negotiating Team

Made available ‘First Alerts’ for citizens requiring emergency responses

Strong advocate of Long-Term Capital & Strategic Planning. The budget


process used this year introduced some of the changes I’d been inviting
such as prioritizing with a written rational to describe the priority (or not)
All of Council was involved in the budget process.

Vocal on marketing and promotion of municipal assets especially our


airport(s) and tourism by being directly involved as V.P. of Product
Development with North of Superior Tourism Association for 2 years

Upgrades to our arena facilities.

Worked with local business partners to support the most recent efforts to restart and sustain a restaurant facility.
