Papal Nuncio Visits Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro

visited the Archdiocese of
Cagayan de Oro on August
7, 2018 at Chali Conference
Center, Cugman, Cagayan de
Oro City. Earlier, the clergy, men
and women religious gathered
for a recollection facilitated
by Fr. Julius Clavero, SSJV who
expounded on “Shepherding as
Ministry of Pastoral Charity.”
Archbishop Ledesma
personally invited the
Nuncio when he learned
that he was going to the
Benedictine Monastery of the
Transfiguration in Malaybalay
City. The papal nuncio said
that he brought with him a
personal letter that the Holy
Father writes for each one:
“Rejoice and be Glad” (Gaudete
et Exsultate). It is an Apostolic
Letter on the Call to Holiness in
Today’s World.
He is happy because in
the Philippines, the Church
is celebrating the Year of
the Clergy and Consecrated
Persons with the theme:
Renewed Servant Leadership
for the New Evangelization. The
people are praying, reflecting
and meditating on this special
grace for them. The theme is
enhanced by a beautiful image
of Jesus washing
the feet of his
disciples.

the two elements
that are essential
in evangelization.

of the people.

give what one

RP-NFP Team Conducts Training of Trainers AWRACO Holds General Assembly

of Trainers on July 12-15,
2018 at the Pearlmont Hotel,
Lim Ket Kai Drive, Cagayan
de Oro City. Participants
were from the Dioceses of
Kidapawan, Surigao, Talibon,
and the Archdiocese of
Ozamis. There were also
participants from the ACDO
Prison Ministry and LGU-City
Improvement Division.
The participants
were welcomed at the
Archbishop’s House with
a sumptuous lunch. After
which the participants were
transported to the venue. Upon
registration, each participant
was given a kit, pen, laminated
name tag, program design.

presented and discussed the
Pastoral Guidelines and Core

Shepherding as Ministry of Pastoral Charity (A talk given by Fr. Julius Clavero, SSJV at the Clergy and Religious Recollection
on August 7, 2018, at the Chali Convention Center, Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City).

Obviously, there are two very important words in our theme today: shepherding
– to tend, guide, and lead the flock; and pastoral charity - defined as “a
particular form of charity which arises from the priest’s union with Christ as
Head and Shepherd of the Church. Through this virtue, the people experience
the love of the Good Shepherd through the instrumentality of the shepherd
who stands in their midst and exercises priestly ministry. Through this virtue,
the priest feeds and guides the flock, tends the injured sheep with the balm of
sacramental mercy and unction, seeks out the lost sheep, and lays down his life
for the sheep.”
My sharing today will have two parts: first, the nature of shepherding from a
petite management book entitled The Way of the Shepherd by Dr. Kevin Leman
William Pentak; and second, on pastoral charity from Nicholas Cachia’s The
Image of the Good Shepherd as a Source for the Spirituality of the Ministerial
Priesthood.
We all share in the ministry of shepherding. We are all shepherds and at the
same time being shepherded by our Divine Shepherd. Here are the typical
duties of a shepherd:
“In the early morning he led forth the flock from the fold, marching at its head to
the spot where they were to be pastured. Here he watched them all day, taking
care that none of the sheep strayed, and if any for a time eluded his watch and
wandered away from the rest, seeking diligently till he found and brought it
back. In those lands sheep require to be supplied regularly with water, and the
shepherd for this purpose has to guide them either to some running stream or
to wells dug in the wilderness and furnished with troughs. At night he brought
the flock home to the fold, counting them as they passed under the rod at the
door to assure himself that none were missing. Nor did his labours always end
with sunset. Often he had to guard the fold through the dark hours from the
attack of wild beasts, or the wily attempts of the prowling thief.” (see 1 Sam
17:34)
In the Old Testament, God as shepherd is characterized mainly into the following
roles: leading, feeding, guarding-presence, gathering-searching, tenderness-
healing, and knowing-alliance. The classic Psalm 23 exemplifies this: “He leads
me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right path for his
name’s sake. Your rod and your staff – they comfort me.”
Principle # 5: The Staff of Direction
- Represents your responsibility to your people. To bring to greener pasture a
flock of more than a hundred sheep? The art of leadership.
- To keep the sheep together.
- To rescue the stranded sheep. When you get your sheep out of trouble, you will
be amazed with their ingenuity and loyalty.
- To encourage the flock. Nothing reassures the sheep more than the presence of
the shepherd.
Principle # 6: The Rod of Correction/Protection

- Represents the responsibility to correct. “Wield this fairly and wisely and your
people will respect you. Use it poorly and they will look for another shepherd.”
- To protect sheep from predators. To protect the sheep from themselves.

- Sometimes hurting the sheep is necessary in order for them to grow.
Principle # 7: The Heart of the Shepherd
- Great leadership is hard work. Sheep may be dumb animals but they can
recognize the voice of their shepherd and will follow no other.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd par excellence. As the Gospel of John proclaims:
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees
the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks
the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares
nothing for the sheep.
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me — just as the
Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down my life for the sheep.
I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They
too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. (Jn:
10:11-16)

The prophet Ezekiel would add: “You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture,
and I am your God, says the Lord.”

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ embodies the perfect shepherd prophesied
in the Old Testament. He is the Great Shepherd who leads his flock to truth
and eternal life. He searched out for the lost and wandering sheep. He showed
compassion and unconditional love to all. Such is beautifully enunciated in the
Gospel of John: “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life
for the sheep.” (Jn 10:11)

There are seven principles of the Way of the Shepherd. Each principle is an
invitation for us, priests and nuns, to reflect on our own style of service and
leadership to our people – in our parishes, schools, and different communities.
Also, let it be an invitation to look within and face our own selves honestly on
how we have allowed God to shepherd us in our life as priests and consecrated Fr. Julius Clavero, SSJV

Principle # 1: Know the condition of your flock

- “A manager cannot manage what he doesn’t know.”
- Treat every individual as a person. (staff, workers, parishioners, volunteers,
etc.)
- You have to really care about your people.

Principle # 2: Discover the shape of your sheep

- Strength – Bring out the best in people
- Heart – Reflects your passion. Bright + Talented but unmotivated?
- Attitude – Talent vs. Attitude?
- Personality – to put a person in a task that reflects his/her personality
- Experiences – each person is a product of their life experience.
This is not only for other people but also for us – what is your own profile or
your SHAPE?

Principle # 3: Help your sheep identify with you.

- Putting tags in the ear of the sheep. It is painful but necessary for them to
belong to their flock. Putting your mark on the sheep.
- Sheep can be stupid creatures but their flocking instinct are very strong.
They rarely cry in pain because they know it will draw the attention of the
predators.
- Great leaders instill a sense of meaning and belonging in their followers – who
they are and what they stand for.
- True mark of a great leader: Authenticity, Integrity, and Compassion.
- As their Pastors, what mark do we want to imprint to our people? Builder?
Motivator? Compassion? Efficiency?

Principle # 4: Make Your Pasture a Safe Place

- Flies, gnats, and bugs infestation can lead to disease and death of the sheep.
- It is the duty of the Pastor to make the pasture a safe place so the sheep could
flourish.
- Keep your sheep informed. Transparency.
- Be visible. Nothing reassures the sheep more than the presence of the
shepherd.

Reflecting on the seven
principles of the Way of the
Shepherd, I said to myself: It
is not easy to be a shepherd.
We realize how daunting the
work of the shepherd can be,
add to it our personal issues,
our woundedness, and the
challenges of being a pastor
nowadays, where do I draw
inspiration, “green pastures,”
and “still waters”?
Pope John Paul II offered a
beautiful reflection on this
view of pastoral charity in his
encyclical Pastores Dabo Vobis.
The Pope explained that priestly
ministry is distinguished by
pastoral charity as an amoris
officium, an office of love. The
unifying principle of all these
duties of the ecclesial shepherd
is pastoral charity which
springs from one’s communion
with Christ. Pope John Paul
II affirms the relevance of
pastoral charity in the life and
ministry of the priests:
The internal principle, the force
which animates and guides
the spiritual life of the priest,
inasmuch as he is configured to
Christ the Head and Shepherd,
is pastoral charity, as
participation in Jesus Christ’s
own pastoral charity. This is a
gift freely bestowed by the Holy
Spirit which is likewise a task
and a call that demands a free
and committed response on the
part of the priest. The essential
content of this pastoral charity
is the gift of self, the total gift
of self, to the Church following

1. B. Lamdag: How do
you see your Congregation’s
Charism being applied in the
current turbulent situation
in the Philippines?
Sr. Fox: Our Congregation,
Notre Dame de Sion, was
founded in France in1847
by a Jew who had become a

the example of Christ.
Pastoral charity in the life and
ministry of the priests is the
key to holiness and the unifying
element between their life
and ministry. Looking at the
essential content of pastoral
charity, we can go back to John
10 - the highest point of the
development of the shepherd
image in the Bible. Here we see
some key characteristics of this
pastoral charity.
First, the compassion by which
the priest identifies himself
with the people he serves.
The heart of the priest must
be burning with compassion
as Jesus was moved with
compassion “for they are like
sheep without a shepherd”
(Mt. 9:36; Mk. 6:34). In John 10,
Jesus is presented as the Good
Shepherd who calls His sheep
by name and enters into an
intimate personal communion
with each one. (Jn. 10:3, 14-
15) The ecclesial shepherd
must also strive to know his
flock intimately with their
spiritual well-being as its end.
The quality of their apostolic
presence and availability
must go beyond liturgical
celebrations notwithstanding
the wide gap of proportion
between the priests and the
parishioners of today.
Secondly, the ecclesial shepherd
is called to become a model of
the Gospel-oriented life, which
is to live a holy and exemplary
life. Though demanded of all

economically secure but most
of the Jewish people at that
time were poor and in ghettos.
He always had a concern to
uplift his people from poverty
and respected their religion, the
religion of most of his family. He
always encouraged the sisters
to read the whole bible. From
his inspiration we express our
charism as a biblical spirituality
where we remind the church
that her roots are in Judaism
and to work for the kingdom
of justice, peace and love first
promised to the Jewish people
for all. We decided to start a
foundation in the Philippines
as the response to the call of a
general chapter to see the world
through the eyes of the poor.
We were not in Asia where the
majority of the people live and
where the majority are poor.
After a process of discernment,
we decided to come to the
Philippines to be among the
poor and where the church
can have a real role in bringing
about the kingdom which Jesus
proclaimed out of his Jewish
faith
Given the situation
of increasing poverty,
increasing killings, increasing
militarization in the
countryside, a culture of
impunity, the unjust system of
contractualization for workers,
lack of genuine agrarian reform
for the farmers, displacement
of lumads from their ancestral
lands and the proposed policies
Christians, priests through
their life of witnessing are to
become inspiration and source
of emulation for the flock
because more are expected
from them. Pastoral charity
then being an expression of the
priest’s love for Christ and the
Church becomes “the synthesis
which unifies the values and
virtues contained in the Gospel
and likewise a power which
sustains their development
towards Christian perfection.”
This pastoral charity is
expressed and enhanced in
a particular manner in the
Eucharist, the source and
summit of the Christian life.
The priest, entrusted by Christ
to celebrate the sacrament of
love and unity is to make his
own Christ’s sacrifice for the
good of the Church. Prayer is
what unites the Eucharistic
offering of the priest to his own
self-offering and manifests his
love for the Church. Personal
prayer and the Liturgy of the
Hours are to have a privileged
time in the daily life of the
priests as a sign of a true and
faithful shepherd.
Finally, pastoral charity must
lead the priest to recognize
the magnitude and various
challenges of becoming a
shepherd and thus submit
himself to a continuing
integration with his life and
ministry in what is commonly
referred to nowadays as
“ongoing formation.” It is a sign
of openness to the workings of
the Holy Spirit in the spirit of
and laws which are making
the situation even worse, more
than ever we need to speak
out for justice, peace and love.
And from our perspective as a
congregation we know that God
was first known to the Hebrews
when they were oppressed in
Egypt. God heard their cry and
called Moses to liberate them.
All through the bible God is
with the people, hearing the
cries of the poor and raising up
prophets to remind the leaders
of the covenant they made with
God and call them to listen to
the poor and act justly. This is
where we see our role now, to
witness that God is always with
the people in their struggles
to bring about a society where
there is justice, peace and love
and to work with the people
towards this biblical promise.
2. B. Lamdag: How
many vocations do you have
at present? (perpetual,
Juniors, novices, postulants/
aspirants). Do you think your
recent experience will have
a positive impact in your
numbers?
Sr. Fox: As a Congregation
we are small internationally.
Here in the Philippines we are
only 8, 4 perpetually professed,
including one Filipina who
was the first Filipina to
make perpetual vows in the
congregation. We have 3 Filipina
juniors and one Indonesian.
At present we have no one in
formation. I am not sure if my
experience will have a positive
impact on our numbers. What
renewal and charity. It is also
an expression of the priest’s
love for Christ and the Church
that his gift of self may be made
more fully and relevant.
From this we can conclude
that:
1) Christ remains always
the Great Shepherd of
the flock; he associates to
himself some chosen ones
who remain completely
dependent on him.
2) The minister always
remains as a member of the
flock, thus underlining the
fact that he is to continue
to follow Jesus, the Good
Shepherd.
3) A very close relationship
is created between the
shepherd and the sheep,
so that one does not exist
without the other.
My dear brothers and sisters,
the ministry of shepherding
is never easy. There is no road
map and we cannot rely on
our own strengths. In the field,
anything can happen. But our
radical commitment to share
in the shepherding of Christ
to bring about God’s flock can
make a difference. We are to
remain open to the God of
surprises whose plan is always
better and bigger than ours,
and who asks us to do things
that we never imagined.
The process is never finished;
it is always calling us to greater
unity, a greater generosity, a
greater zeal. To be shepherds
of today we journey in faith
I would hope is that it becomes
a challenge for young people
to really commit themselves to
bringing about a society where
there are no more who have no
food to eat, who die because
they can’t afford the medicines,
who can’t study because they
have to supplement the family
income, who are mourning
their love ones who have been
extrajudicially killed, who are
not able to practice their culture

own lands, where the earth is
respected and where there is
genuine peace based on justice.
3. B. Lamdag: Here in
the Philippines, where are
you communities? Will you
be taking on other concerns
in the light of the plight of
more poor people?

hope and become signs of
hope to our countless and
diverse flock. Let us re-live our
initial generosity and self-gift
to the flock entrusted to us.
Why? Because God has always
been our faithful and steady
Shepherd who stirs up hope
and love in our hearts.
Let us end with this prayer
from a Capuchin brother:
Lord God, I sometimes wonder
why and how you have called
me, one of your sheep, to
serve you and your people as
a shepherd, a pastor. But here
I am. As you have called me to
lead others to pasture, lead me
when I am tired and hungry to
places of rest and nourishment.
As you have called me to seek
out the lost, come after me
when I don’t know where I am
or what I should do, when I feel
alone. As you have called me
to bring back those who have
strayed, bring me back when I
wander off, when I forget who I
am, Whose I am, and whom you
have called me to be. As you
have called me to bind up the
injured, put me back together
when I am hurting. As you have
called me to heal those who
are sick, send your holy and
healing balm to mend my body,
mind and soul. I ask this in the
name of your Son and our Good
Shepherd, Jesus, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God forever and
ever. Amen.

There were questions raised
which the team properly
clarified and answered. There
were extended sharing of
experiences and impressions
that the training has to
continue even after dinner.
Part of the training is how
to start the program in the
parishes and the monitoring
system of ACDO was shared
to the participants. They were
enthusiastic to share their
learnings and that in turn they
wanted the program to be
established in their respective
parishes.

“Speaking in tongues” a sign of demonic possession, exorcist says

This line surprises, if
not shocks, many people
especially those who claim
to have this gift and feel holy
or holier than other church-
goers. This striking statement
was one of the highlights
of the talk of no other than
our very own exorcist, Fr.
Roberto Balsamo, Jr. SSJV in
the Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Oro. He made this thing clear
to all those who attended
the theological hour at Jesus
Nazareno Parish on July 11,
2018. The theological hour is
held every second Wednesday
of the month as a way of
parochial formation initiated
by Fr. Julius Clavero, the
parish priest.
Fr. Balsamo presented a
lot of Church documents on
the existence of demons, their
powers and how their hatred
for God turned them to harm
mankind whom God loves
so much. Our sins somehow
become an opening to
demonic spirits - it is like we
welcome them - allowing them
to harm us. The exorcist also
presented the different levels
of demonic attack which are
sometimes in the mind and
heart, on things, imaginations,
visions, in the physical body
and the most spectacular is
demonic possession.
When Fr. Balsamo
presented the list of the
signs of being possessed,
one of them which made
the audiences’ eyes wide
open was the so-called “gift
of tongues.” We know a lot
of charismatic groups, both
Catholic and Protestant
alike, claim to have this kind
of gift, and it even became
the highlight of some group
fellowship. But Fr. Balsamo
insisted, “When you start
to speak something you do
not understand, stop it! Be
safe!” he exclaimed. “It is
not judging anybody but, to
be safe, clarify your words,
like: ‘I praise you, Oh, Lord…’
rather than saying something
you don’t understand.” He
reminded everybody that on
Pentecost day, people from
different origins understood
the words of the apostles in
their own languages.
Gifts are given with a
purpose and not just for the
sake of the gift. On the other
hand, the gift of tongues is
a recognized gift of the Holy
Spirit. Even the Saints, like
St. Vincent Ferrer and others,
experienced this phenomenon.
But the problem now is that
who is going to discern the
gift and how reliable is the
discernment of anybody. God
gives gifts for His glory and for
the salvation of souls and not
as an ornament only.
Lastly, Fr. Jun exhorted
the audience to be active in
their sacramental life like
Penance and the Eucharist. He
exhorted everybody to pray the
rosary or other sacramentals
heartily for these things work

talk by blessing water, salts
and oils so that the audience
may bless their own homes.

aimed to increase awareness
on the existence of the Basic

Eucharistic Youth of Santuario
Eucaristico – Sacred Heart
Parish conducted a Parish
Youth Assembly with the
theme: “Young People, Faith
and Vocational Discernment”
(SYNOD 2018) and was blessed
with 94 youth participants.
Many participated in this
activity and this is another
stepping stone towards
gathering the youth who will
be officially members of the
Eucharistic Youth Ministry.
The program started
at 1:00 PM with a prayer
and animations followed
by welcome remarks from
Rev. Fr. Froilan R. A. Briones,
SSS, rector and parish priest.
