Licensing
ApogeeX is dongle-protected, using a yellow USB dongle. The dongle is supplied
with the ApogeeX Starter Kit when you purchase your ApogeeX System. The
dongle has a serial ID number.
To use ApogeeX, you will also need a license key. The license key is a unique file
that can be generated via the Agfa Licensing Portal, and is linked to your dongle
ID number. You can purchase additional licenses for extra functionality.
NOTE: The Satellite system does not need a dongle, since the ApogeeX Satellite
software is registered to the ApogeeX Server System.
2 Installing ApogeeX
This section explains how to install the ApogeeX Server, Satellite and Failover
systems, as well as the Client applications and additional components.
27
28 BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION
■ If you are using multiple network cards, check the network card order.
ApogeeX registers on the first network card. You should not change the order
of the network cards after installation, since this will prevent ApogeeX from
starting up.
■ The computer name on which you install ApogeeX should use only the
following characters: a-z, A-Z, 0-9. The name should not contain spaces,
dashes, underscores, or names longer than 14 characters since some DNS
servers do not support these characters.
■ Make sure that File sharing for Macintosh and Windows is enabled.
■ Have your ApogeeX dongle ready, but do not yet connect it to your system.
■ If you are going to use Agfa output devices, make sure that you have installed
an APIS card.
■ The ApogeeX production DVDs are high quality DVDs. However, there have
been some reports of malfunctioning DVDs. You are therefore advised to
verify the integrity of your DVD and DVD reader by copying the entire
ApogeeX DVD to the hard drive of your computer prior to starting the
installer - Copy it to a shared folder on the ApogeeX Server (e.g. E:\ApogeeX
2.5.0 DVD). This requires 4.5 GB of free disk space. For the same reason, we
advise you not to duplicate the ApogeeX DVD.
ApogeeX In addition to the ApogeeX System software, the following prerequisite compo-
nents need to be installed:
Prerequisites
■ Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). This is not required for
Windows Server 2003.
■ Registration Utility
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is a universal set of data access tools
developed by Microsoft. ApogeeX uses these tools to manage its data.
When installing ApogeeX, the installer will check if MDAC is installed on your
PC, if not or if MDAC needs upgrading, the installer will install/update MDAC
before installing ApogeeX.
NOTE: If you are running Windows Server 2003, MDAC is already installed.
A WIBU-KEY comprises:
■ driver software
Registration Utility

The Client runs on Mac OS 9.2 or higher, and Mac OS X (10.2 or higher).
The Installer for both clients is automatically shared on the computer on which
the ApogeeX Server is installed, in the following location:
...\\<ApogeeXServer>\ApogeeXSupportFiles\ClientInstallerMac
...\\<ApogeeXServer>\ApogeeXSupportFiles\ClientInstallerPC\setup.exe
NOTE: The Macintosh Client Installer requires 971 MBytes on older HFS disks.
This is not the case on HFS+ disks.
If you are upgrading your ApogeeX System from version 2.1.1, then new
ApogeeX Clients, including QmsX (Windows and Macintosh), must be used. An
ApogeeX 2.1.1 Client (or earlier) cannot be used with an ApogeeX 2.5.0 System
(the ApogeeX System will be grayed out in the logon window). In this case, you
should first uninstall the old clients and then install the new clients (see
“Uninstalling ApogeeX Clients” on page 96).
The ApogeeX Client installation wizard is started. This wizard installs the
ApogeeX software and Online Help.

Configuring ApogeeX
This section describes how to enable a guest account to allow users to submit
files, how to configure a mail server in ApogeeX so that e-mails can be sent out,
and how to automate the process creating a user/account login and sending a
mail to the new user.
Configuring a Mail In order to send e-mails, a correct mail server must be configured in the ApogeeX
Client.
Server in ApogeeX
" To configure a mail server
1 Start the ApogeeX Client.
6 Enter either the name or IP address of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server.
7 Click OK.
NOTE: For more information on configuring the Mail Server, refer to the
ApogeeX Service Guide.
Configuring When a user and/or an account is created, a login is created for the user/
account, and a mail is sent to the user containing a link to the Website's login
WebApproval page. To automate this process, a number of settings need to be configured in the
Services in ApogeeX WebApproval Component.
ApogeeX
" To configure WebApproval services in ApogeeX
1 Start the ApogeeX Client.
The default settings in the General Tab are OK for most administrators:
Setting
! Max. login attempts: The maximum number of times the user can enter
the wrong password before being locked out.
! Min. lockout time: The first time a user reaches the maximum number of
login attempts, he is locked out for the amount of time (in minutes) speci-
fied here. After this time has elapsed, he can try to login again.
! Max. lockout time: The second time a user reaches the maximum login
attempts threshold, the lockout period is increased to the maximum
lockout time (in minutes) specified here.
! PostScript uploads: From the list, you can choose Not Allowed,
Wellformed PS only, or Allow All. This setting is used by ApogeeX to
prevent allowing the user to upload Postscript, or badly formatted PS,
which might contain malicious script code.
If after the specified number of retries the file still fails to upload, the
ApogeeX Operator receives a notification. He can then choose either to
remove the file or to try again.
! Time between mail retry: The number of minutes WebApproval will wait
before automatically attempting to resend an e-mail which was not
delivered.
Expiration
! New Password: When a user is created, his initial password stays valid for
15 days. During this period, the user must login and must change his
initial password.
! Reset by user: When a user requests a reset of his own password (in case
he forgot it), an e-mail is sent to him to create a new password. This email
remains valid for 15 minutes only.
6 Select the Printer tab, and enter the Company Name, the WebApproval URL
and E-mail Domain Name.
The WebApproval URL field is used to send a link to the user, and must be
configured correctly. You must use the full pathname, including the virtual
directory, irrespective of whether or not you selected the root access check
box during installation (see “Installing the WebApproval WebServer” on
page 123).
! HTTP:// or HTTPS://
! The name that you selected as the virtual directory during the WebServer
installation (by default, this is ‘WebApproval’).
For example:
! http://www.webapproval.printer.com/webapproval
! http://10.232.50.10/webapproval
NOTE: When using the fully qualified domain name, you must have a
registered domain name on the Internet. Domain name registration can be
done by various companies. Browse to www.iana.org, select iana ccTLD
Database and select your country. The URL for registration services brings
you to the website where domain name registration can be done.
or
<e-mail address>
The E-mail or domain name is important since many e-mail servers check the
domain name before allowing mail to be sent out. This depends on how you
configured your E-mail/domain name.
In the above example, the user will receive an e-mail from no-
reply@printer.com.
The ‘Send job activation...’ check box is a global setting. When selected,
emails will be sent to WebApproval users, informing them that results are
available for viewing. If this check box is not selected, no notifications will be
sent.

NOTE: You must first upgrade the ApogeeX Server, and then any ApogeeX
Satellites, and then the WebApproval Application Server.
You may also be using a Failover system. However, a Failover system cannot be
upgraded. You have to uninstall the Failover system completely, and then install
a fresh Failover system.
Before you start the Upgrade Installer, these are the procedures you should
follow:
To do this, create new folders on your system, and then export these param-
eter sets to these folders.
8 Make sure that there is enough free space on the disk where the ApogeeX
databases are located.
The original Render Task Processor name can be seen in the Windows Task

took previously of the HotFolderJDFInput.
CAUTION: If the Failover system also acts as an ApogeeX Satellite, make sure
that you rename all ApogeeDataStores (which are part of the ApogeeX
Satellite) before uninstalling the ApogeeX 2.1.1 Failover system. Otherwise
the ApogeeX 2.1.1 Failover uninstaller will remove these datastores.

of the computer on which the ApogeeX framework is installed (you can enter
a computer name if a DNS server is available).
16 The “network traffic originating from the web server...” option is only
required if:
! The firewall between the Application server and the Web server uses port
forwarding. In this case, enter the IP address of the firewall.
! The Application server has 2 network cards, and the network card used to
communicate with the Web server is not the first (in order). In this case,
enter the IP address of the second network card (i.e., of the Application
server).
NOTE: For more information on the order of network cards, refer to the
ApogeeX Service Guide.
17 For ‘The Port number to communicate with the Web server’, choose your
TCP/IP port number, or accept the default choice (5000).
NOTE: The Apogee PrintDrive and Apogee PDFRip joblog also use the same
default TCP/IP port number (5000). You must choose a different port
number than used by these or any other applications.
NOTE: For security reasons, you should choose a folder that is not on the same
drive as the Operating System and the Application.

CAUTION: The SQL Server upgrade has finished, but the Service Pack 3
installation is still running! You need to wait until D_SetupSQL2000.exe
program is finished. This takes about 10 minutes. There is no confirmation
that this process is busy, and no confirmation message when it is finished. You
will only see the application button in the Windows Taskbar:
20 If you select this process while it is running, you will see the following:
21 Select Start >Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to check
that the SQL Server is installed.
23 Click the ‘support information’ link to check the SQL Server version.
If the SQL Server version is different from the version indicated in the screen
shot above, then Service Pack 3 is not correctly installed. The correct version
is 8.00.761. This version number is visible even before the SQL Server has
been fully installed - you do not have to wait until the button disappears from
the taskbar.
ApogeeX Failover
If you are using an ApogeeX Failover system, this should be running the same
MSDE-SQL version as the ApogeeX Server. Therefore, you must also upgrade
your MSDE-SQL software on the Failover system.
6 Copy the Agfa\ApogeeX backup folder to its original location on the ApogeeX
Server and Satellite systems.
8 Delete the following registry keys on the ApogeeX Server and Satellite
systems:
HKLM\Software\Agfa
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall\ApogeeX
9 Import the 3 Registry keys on the ApogeeX Server and Satellite systems by
starting Regedit, and selecting File > Import.
After performing the above steps, you should be able to start ApogeeX 2.1.1.
The Job/Hot tickets can be imported in ApogeeX 2.5.0. The job description
will be automatically upgraded if necessary (e.g. Flattener replaced by
PDFReady). Task Processors which are not available in ApogeeX 2.5.0 are
removed from the ticket: The user has to select the correct Task Processor
replacement.
All of the ApogeeX 2.1.1 Parameter Sets can be imported in ApogeeX 2.5.0.
1 Create a folder for each Task Processor on your hard disk and save the Param-
eter sets in the correct folder.
2 If the Task Processor has multiple operations (e.g. the Renderer), then we
recommend you specify the operation name in the file (TPoperation-param).
■ Linearization Curves
■ Calibration Curves.
Unfortunately most resources cannot be exported. For these resources, you need
to have the original resource (which you downloaded to ApogeeX 2.1.1) or take
some screenshots in order to recreate the resource in ApogeeX 2.5.0.
NOTE: We only support ApogeeX 2.1.1 job archives which were created after
installation of the ApogeeX 2.1.1-patch4. Jobs created with a different ApogeeX
2.1.1 patch level can pose some reprocessing issues.
1 ApogeeX 2.1.1 job archives can be imported in ApogeeX 2.5.0. However, due
to the amount of time required for archiving/importing jobs, delete as many
ApogeeX 2.1.1 jobs (which are no longer needed) as possible.
2 Before uninstalling ApogeeX 2.1.1, rename the ArchiveRoot folder where all
your archives are located. This is because the ApogeeX 2.1.1 uninstaller will
delete the ArchiveRoot folder.
When the ApogeeX 2.1.1 job archives are imported, some conversion is
performed, and the job description will be automatically upgraded if needed
(e.g. Flattener replaced by PDFReady). Task Processors which are not avail-
able in ApogeeX 2.5 are removed from the ticket. Users will need to select the
correct Task Processor replacement.
NOTE: Only the pages which are used in the runlist will be imported. Unused
pages are not imported (previous revisions), therefore the page revision
number will not be provided.
CAUTION: Some imported ApogeeX 2.1.1 job archives may display an error
when reprocessing. This occurs for all jobs which have unsupported ApogeeX
2.5.0 Production Plans.
3 To archive jobs with pages from the Public PageStore, you must use the ‘all
available results’ archive option. Do not use the ‘results marked for archive
only’ option (pages will not be archived).
CAUTION: Archive-import will not provide the required results for Public
PageStore jobs (jobs where the last Task Processor is the Public PageStore).
You need to export all PDF documents from the Public PageStore manually.
Before doing this, we recommend that you ask the customer to delete as many
PDF documents from the Public PageStore as possible (deleting Public
Pagestore documents requires the ApogeeX 2.1.1-patch4).
CAUTION: Job Archives from ApogeeX 1.0.0 systems cannot be imported in
ApogeeX 2.5.0. The following message is displayed: ‘Upgrader is unable to
upgrade the given job description’.

184 INSTALLER FAILS TO CONNECT TO THE APOGEEX SYSTEM
If you select “yes” to retry and the installation still fails (and the ApogeeX System
is still running), then you can try the following procedure:
4 Double-click Agfa\ApogeeX\launcher.bat.
Installer is Halted
The installer may stop working if you perform other actions on the system on
which you are installing ApogeeX. We therefore strongly recommend that you
do not do anything else on the system during installation. You should also leave
the installer running in the foreground.
3 Put the loopback adapter to the top of the list of available connections.
However, you can change the order of the network cards as described below.
NOTE: This procedure is valid for the ApogeeX System as well as for the ApogeeX
Windows Clients.
3 Use the arrows to move the Network connection on which ApogeeX needs to
register to the top of the list.
2 Select Device Manager and double click the entry ‘WIBU-BOX/U’ under
WIBU-KEY Software Protection.
The information window confirms that the USB Wibu dongle is working
properly.
“The PAC driver could not be initialised. The driver may not be installed or it
may already be in use”
In this case, you must manually install the PAC driver using Device Manager to
solve the problem.
7 Click Finish.
MDAC will not be updated, since you now have the latest version.
A Appendix
This Appendix explains how to start up and shut down ApogeeX. Information is
also provided on where the software is installed, and the currently supported
third-party software.

190 STARTING AND STOPPING THE APOGEEX SYSTEM
4 Click the Show Components triangle to display the status of the components
that have been started.
It takes about 5 minutes to load all the Task Processors. When all the major
Services and Server components are started, the ApogeeX Console tool will
display the following message:
“ApogeeX_System” is active
NOTE: Task Processors are not shown in the components section of the
ApogeeX Console. Task Processors which are not licensed will not start.
6 If you have one or more Satellite systems, then you should next start the
ApogeeX Launcher on the Satellite system(s).
4 Click Yes.
If you use this method, you must close the Task Processors in a specific order, as
described below:
1 First, close the three ApogeeX System components which have the same
name as your ApogeeX System (the first three, illustrated below). To do this,
right-click on the Task, and select Close from the context menu.
2 Normally, all the remaining Task Processors are closed one after another,
until only four components are still left running:
5 If you have a Satellite system, then this system will also shut down
automatically.
NOTE: The Satellite and Failover systems are normally installed on the same
hardware platform.
The ApogeeX All the ApogeeX System software is by default installed in the Agfa\ApogeeX
folder. This comprises:
Server
■ The ApogeeX Console
■ Preview Server
■ Optional Services
■ Support Files
■ PDF Datastore
■ ExportRoot
■ HotFolderRoot
■ ArchiveRoot
■ StorageServerRoot
■ ImageSetterTIFFRoot
■ PlateSetterTIFFRoot
■ ProoferTIFFRoot
■ PressRoot
■ GenericPressRoot
■ SupportFiles folder
■ JDFImportRoot
■ PKGJDFRoot
NOTE: The shares are created by the ApogeeX installer, and are activated after
the computer has been rebooted.
Each Task Processor comprises a bin folder where the software of this Task
Processor is placed:
The Satellite If you installed a Satellite system, then the folder structure on this system will be
as follows:
System
The Failover If you installed a Failover system, then the folder structure on this system will be
as follows:
System
NOTE: In the example above, the Failover system is also used as a Satellite
system. This is why you can see an ApogeeX folder with the installed
components.
WebApproval If you installed WebApproval, then the folder structure on the WebApproval
Application Server will be as follows:
