1. Define the following terms:

3. Fill in the blanks with suitable conversion of units

6. The successive measurements of time period of a simple pendulum


in a simple pendulum experiment comes out to be 2.63s, 2.56s, 2.42s,
2.71s, 2.80s. Calculate the absolute and percentage error.

7. The voltage across a lamp is (6.0 ± 0.1) V and the current passing
through it is (4.0 ± 0.2) A. Find the power consumed by the lamp
with error limits. Use the relation P=VI.
8. The angle subtended by moon at a point on earth is 0031’. If the
distance of moon from the earth is 3.84x 108m, find the diameter of
the moon.
9. Find the area of a circle of radius 3.458 cm up to correct significant
figures.
10. If the % error in the measurement of the radius R of a sphere is
0.2%, then calculate the % error in its volume.
11.If x=at2+bt +c, where x is displacement as a function of time t. Write
the dimensions of a, b and c.
12.Check the dimensional consistency of the equation:
a. FS= 1/2mv2- 1/2mu2
b. T=2π√𝑙/𝑔
13. X=A Sin (ω t +C) where x is displacement and t is time. What are
the units of A, ω and C?
14. y= a log(b t + c) where y is displacement and t is time. What are
the units of a, b, c.
15. Velocity is determined by measuring distance and time. If the %
error in measuring distance is 2% and the % error in measuring time
is 1%, what is the maximum % error in measuring velocity?

same time, another is projected vertically upwards from the ground
with the velocity of 50m/s. Find when and where they will meet.

9. A body travels the first 1/3 distance between two points at 10km/h,
the next 1/3 at 20km/h and next 1/3 at 60km/h. What is the average
speed for the whole journey?

10.A sprinter increases his speed from rest uniformly at the rate of
1m/s2 up to 3 quarters of the total run and covers the last quarter
with uniform speed. How much time does she take to cover the first
half and second half of the run?

CHAPTER: MOTION IN A PLANE


1. Classify the following into scalars and vectors. Distance,
displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, mass, volume, time,
linear momentum.
2. What is the angle between two forces of 2N and 4N having resultant
as 4N?
3. Derive the expression for the magnitude and direction of the
resultant of two vectors acting at a point.
4. For particle in a uniform circular motion speed is uniform but its
velocity is not uniform, explain.
5. What is centripetal acceleration? Give the expression for it.
6. State and explain, Law of triangle of vectors and Law of
parallelogram of vectors.
7. Derive the expression for trajectory of a projectile or show that the
trajectory (path) of a projectile is a parabola.
8. Derive the expression for maximum height, horizontal range and
time of flight of a projectile.
9. Derive the expression for the centripetal acceleration.
10.Find the unit vector in the direction of 2𝑖̂+3𝑗̂+4𝑘̂.
11.If the horizontal displacement and vertical displacement at time t are
x=3t and y= 4t-5t2 respectively, what are the time of flight, horizontal
range and maximum height reached by the projectile?
12.If the maximum height attained by a projectile is equal to the
horizontal range, what is the value of angle of projection?

CHAPTER:LAWS OF MOTION

1. Define the following terms, give its SI units and dimensions.


Momentum, impulse, angular velocity, angular acceleration, centripetal
acceleration.
2. Derive an expression for the maximum speed of a vehicle on a
circular level road. (Draw diagram)
A bend in a level road has a radius of 100m. Calculate the maximum
speed which a car turning this bend may have without skidding. Given
coefficient of friction=0.8

3. What do you mean by banking of road? Derive an expression for the


maximum speed of a vehicle moving on a banked circular track.
(Draw diagram)

4. A stone is tied to a string and whirled in a horizontal circle at 120


rpm. What is the angular velocity of the rotation?

5. Two bodies of masses 4kg and 3kg respectively are connected by a


light string passing over a smooth frictionless pulley. Calculate the
acceleration of the masses and the tension in the string.

6. A women weighing 50kg stands on a weighing machine placed in a


lift. What will be the reading of the machine, when the lift is moving
upwards with a uniform velocity of 5m/s and moving downwards
with a uniform acceleration of 1m/s2?

7. A bullet of mass 60g moving with a velocity of 500 m/s is brought to


rest in 0.01s. Find the impulse and the average force of blow.

8. A ball moving with a momentum of 5kgm/s strikes against a wall at


an angle of 450 and is reflected at the same angle. Calculate the change
in momentum (in magnitude).

9. A cyclist moves at a speed of 36km/h along a curved road of radius


of curvature 50m. What is the angle through which the cyclist has to
tilt the cycle?

10.A car moves along a level curved road (µs=0.5) of radius 60m. What is
the maximum safe speed possible?
11.A curved road of radius of curvature 50m is banked at 100. What is
the maximum safe speed? What is the optimum speed? Given, µs=0.6

12.What is kinetic friction? A horizontal force of 12N is applied to a1500g


block, which rests on a horizontal surface. If the coefficient of friction
is 0.3, find the acceleration produced in the block.

13.What is linear momentum? Give its SI unit and dimensions. State and
prove the law of conservation of linear momentum from Newton’s
third law of motion.

14.Give reasons for the following:


a. A cricket player lowers his hands while catching a ball.
b. When bullet is fired from a gun, the gun gives a kick in the
backward direction.

c. It is easier to maintain the motion of the body than to start.

CHAPTER:WORK, ENERGY AND POWER

1. Define the terms work and power. Give its SI unit and dimensions.

2. What do you mean by kinetic and potential energy? Write the


mathematical expressions to calculate it.

3. State and prove the work energy theorem for a constant force and for a
varying force.

4. If the momentum increases by 50%, by what percentage will the energy


increase?

5. What are elastic and in elastic collisions?


6. Derive an expression for the velocities of object which undergo one
dimensional elastic collision.

7. Derive an expression for the loss in kinetic energy of an object which


undergo one dimensional inelastic collision.

8. What do you mean by conservative and non-conservative forces? Give


example for each.

9. State the law of conservation of mechanical energy. Prove it in the case of


a freely falling body.

10. Derive an expression for the potential energy of a stretched spring.

11. Show that spring force is a conservative force.

12. What do you mean by spring constant. Give its SI unit and dimension.

13. Calculate the work done by a 47 N force pushing a 0.025 kg pencil 0.25
m against a force of 23 N.
14. A girl pushes her little brother on his sled with a force of 300 N for
750m. How much work is this if the force of friction acting on the sled is

15. A boy on a bicycle drags a wagon full of newspapers at 0.800 m/s for
30.0 min using a force of 40.0 N. How much work has the boy done?

(b) If this force were applied by a spring, what would the spring
constant have to be in order for the spring to be stretched to only
0.0800 m while pulling the box?
25. A 3.0 kg metal ball, at rest, is hit by a 1.0 kg metal ball moving at 4.0
m/s. The 3.0 kg ball moves forward at a speed of 2.0 m/s and the 1.0 kg
ball bounces back at 2.0 m/s.
(a) What is the total kinetic energy before the collision?
(b) What is the total kinetic energy after the collision?
(c) How much energy is transferred from the small ball to the large ball?
26. A 10.0 g pebble is placed in a sling shot with a spring constant of 200.0
N/m and is stretched back 0.500 m. What is the maximum velocity the
pebble will acquire?
27. A spring with one end fixed is kept compressed and a toy train of mass
500g is kept in contact with the free end. On releasing the spring, the cart
starts moving with a velocity of 20cm/s. What is the potential energy
stored in the spring?
