LESSON REFLECTION
Description
I began the lesson by introducing the topic of Aboriginal Australians to the students asking them to share
what the already knew. I then directed the lesson introducing the concept of knowing and understanding
Aboriginal Australian History through the means of Art, giving examples of the types of Art. We then
discussed Dreaming Stories, and watched a youtube clip on Rock Paintings. I then presented the students
with a Rock Art painting of a tall ship, including Very Important Points VIPs that I had picked from an
article. I discussed with the students that these paintings were believed to be Dutch Explorers dating back
to the 1600’s, making connections with previous lessons on European Explorer Christopher Columbus. I
then directed the students through the steps of recreating the rock painting of the ships using Brenex paper
and chalk pastels.

Reflection
I believe the students understood the the perspectives of the first nations peoples in seeing the ships for the
first time throughout the visualisation activity. Each student was enthusiastic to share how they might feel
and drew on their own experiences to describe their feelings. I believe this demonstrated their
understanding quite well. The students were successful in using different chalk drawing techniques.

Action
In future I believe it would be useful to include Aboriginal artefacts. This might be more engaging for the
students.
