TRANSSCRIPT : HOW TO CHECK AND SET THE VALVE CLEARANCE

Link Video: https://youtu.be/cvsh2G-88Zs

Opening and introduction

Hello guys I am Rifqi, will share a tips to check and set the valve clearance. Valve clearance is
impotant for our car engine... why?. If the gap is too loose, then the valve opens too late and closes
too fast, so it can cause noisy noise and vibration. If the valve gap is too narrow, the valve opens too
early and closes slowly, resulting in ignition, or return ignition.

TOOLS

1. Feeler Gauge 0,20mm and 0,30mm

3. Ring wrench 12”

4. Ring Wrench 19”

5. Screwdriver

Content (how to check and set the valve clearance)

How to Set a Valve Gap?

Previously note, that this tutorial is done on Toyota Kijang 5K engine with valve mechanism is OHV,
and FO 1-3-4-2.

1. remove the cylinder head cover nut

With Rin Wrench 12”, loose the nut that hold the cylinder head cover, after that, release the
cylinder head cover

2. Look at the front pulley, look at the timing mark

Pulley is located in the front of the engine, precisely behind the radiator.

3. Set the Top Dead Center (TDC)

a. Rotate the crank shaft using ring wrench 19” until the mark on the crankshaft pulley
exactly matches the number 0 on the timing chain cap or cylinder block
b. Determine the top of the cylinder compression 1 or 4, can be done in a way:
At the time of turning the crankshaft while watching the IN valve where the cylinder
is moving. Look at the IN valve or push rod IN valve on cylinder 1 or 4 while moving
the crankshaft pulley.
4. Choose the valve which will be check and set
Determine which valves may be adjusted at the top of the cylinder compression 1 or 4. This
is done by looking at the diagram / table of the cylinder work process or it could be by
moving the crankshaft pulle while looking at the push rod of the stationary valve. Unmoved
push rods may then be set.

5. Check the valve gap or clearance

Use Feeler Gauge to check the valve, the gap size is 0,20mm for IN valve and 0,30mm for EX
valve

6. Set the valve gap to specification.

To set the valve clearance yo must prepare Ring wrench 12”, screwdriver and feeler gauge
the step is:
a. Loose the nuts 12” using ring wrench 12”.
b. Place or insert the feeler gauge into the gap between the rocker arm and the valve
stem.
c. Make adjustments by altering (tightening / relaxing) the adjusting bolts with a
screwdriver
d. Once the valve gap is correct, tighten the retaining nut while holding the adjusting
bolt to keep it from moving. Then check again the valve slit by feeling the pull /
friction of the feeler gauge.

7. Check the valve clearance again

In correct, Close the cylinder head again, then install the other components

8. Check the engine sound

If the engine sound is good or smooth, it (set valve clearance) meanit successful

Closing
So those are the step and tips, I hope they’re useful for you and meaningful for you.. Thank you for
wathing.. see you...
