15 Short Answer Week 4

There are four types of victimization that occur in prison: Physical, economic,
psychological, and social. Physical violence victimization refers to the act of inflicting harm on
another inmate through violent actions, which can often be sexual or have sexual overtones. This
is the most common form of victimization. Economic victimization includes the manipulation or
exploitation of an inmate by means of the sub-rose economy of the prison/jail institution.
Psychological victimization refers to the subtle manipulation tactics and mind games that occur
amongst inmates in prison, which is usually used in order to manipulate or black mail an inmate.
Social victimization deals with the prejudice and discrimination against a person because of the
social characteristics of that person, such as race, religion, political position, etc. People who are
young in age, gang members, vulnerable populations, debt, etc. are most at risk for physical
violence. People who are in an economic bind are most exposed to economic victimization.
People who have harsher prison environments are most exposed to psychological victimization.
People who are involved in a more segregated aspect of corrections are exposed to social
victimization. However, these acts of victimization are somewhat all intertwined. In order to cut
down on victimization, the correction institutions need to have stricter punishments for
victimization, and also become more involved in deterring these situations before they occur.
Also, increase supervision on inmates who are more susceptible to do harm to others.
