CORINA BARTRA
SOMETHIN' JAZZ CLUB / MARCH 6
Vocalist Corina Bartra's musical fluency combines the Criolla harmonies and rhythms
of her native Peru with jazz and world music. Whether performing with an orchestra
or a quartet, Bartra finds her groove and builds a sound that is all her own. Bartra's
emotional delivery and unfettered quality have been met with acclaim with the New
York Daily News and All About Jazz singing her praises. Alongside grants from the
American Embassy and the Carnegie Foundation, Bartra has aimed her sights on
expanding Afro-Peruvian jazz in the United States, securing its presence for years to
come. At Somethin', saxophonist Math Stackler, guitarist Billy Newman, pianist Dan
Kaufman, bassist Uri Klainman and percussionist Perico Diaz will join Bartra on tunes
that span her entire catalog. EW

CYNTHIA SAYER
JOE'S PUB / MARCH 7
A decade in Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band increased Cynthia Sayer's public
exposure. But it's the four-string banjo player's work as a leader that has expanded her
style and her reputation as a formidable jazz musician. It doesn't hurt that she is also
an appealing singer in the mainstream tradition, with more than a wink of humor and
irreverence in her approach. One of last year's delights was Sayer's CD Joyride (cyn
thiasayer.com), wherein she ventures beyond the usual circumscribed banjo role to fea-
ture it as a blues, tango and swing instrument, as well as a credible ballad limner.
She'll be front and center at this gig, billed as The Banjo Show, with Dennis Lichtman,
clarinet and fiddle; Jared Engel, bass and Larry Eagle, drums. GK
AL FOSTER
VILLAGE VANGUARD / MARCH 11-16
Considered one of the most versatile and in-demand drummers today, Al Foster is well
into his sixth decade as a professional. Foster made his recording debut at 16 with Blue
Mitchell. Heard in 1969 by Miles Davis, the trumpeter recruited Foster for his band
where he would spend the next 13 years touring and recording. Foster's versatile chops
have been utilized by numerous greats including McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Bill
Evans, Stan Getz, Horace Silver and Dexter Gordon, to name just a few. By 1997, the
drummer was leading his own group on a regular basis and made his first CD as a
leader, Brandyn, which also showcased his skills as a composer. His current quartet
includes saxophonist Dayna Stephens, pianist Adam Birnbaum and bassist Doug
Weiss. KD
AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE
JAZZ STANDARD / MARCH 13-16
Quirky originality may be valued among jazz legends, but Thelonious Monk probably
couldn't win the international competition named in his honor—at least not until
2007, when Ambrose Akinmusire not only won it, but went on to win a prestigious
International Jazz Trumpet Solo competition. Akinmusire is not afraid to expand and
even ignore the usual parameters of trumpet playing in fashioning compelling, cliché-
free solos that can range from mellow to clamorous, pinched and squeezed to clarion.
Since signing with Blue Note three years ago he has expanded his vision as a compos-
er and leader. At this gig the Ambrose Akinmusire Project, his working quintet plus
guitarist Charles Altura and vocalist Theo Bleckmann, will be previewing his new CD,
the imagined savior is far easier to paint. GK
MARIA SCHNEIDER
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER / MARCH 14-15
Duke Ellington's highest praise was to describe something as "beyond category." His
words come to mind on the heels of composer/conductor/arranger Maria Schneider win-
ning three 2014 Grammys in Classical categories for her latest recording, Winter
Morning Walks (ArtistShare). However, garnering a new armload of awards to deco-
rate her already crowded mantel is not a sign that Schneider is turning her back on her
musical roots. Listeners will have a chance to hear that for themselves when she brings
her 17-piece jazz orchestra into the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. In the two
decades since she released her first big band/orchestra recording, Schneider has con-
sistently attracted some of the top players in jazz and crafts her material to spotlight
each individual's talents and skills. EK

BRIAN LANDRUS
92Y / MARCH 14
Primarily a baritone saxophonist, Brian Landrus uses all the low octave woodwinds in
his arsenal for this set, on the first day of the annual 92Y Soul Jazz Festival, where he
is also artistic director. He'll open for DJ Logic and Joey DeFrancesco's All Stars. The
35-year-old straddles the fence evenly between mainstream and progressive jazz. After
earning Master's degrees in both composition and saxophone from the New England
Conservatory, Landrus stormed onto the NYC scene. His band, Kaleidoscope, a high
level electric quartet melded with a string ensemble, can be heard on Capsule and the
recent Mirage (BlueLand). Conducted by Ryan Truesdell, it features guitarist Nir
Felder, keyboardist Leo Genovese and bassist Lonnie Plaxico, while the acoustic instru-
mentalists include notables like violinist Sara Caswell and cellist Jody Redhage. MGN
GARY PEACOCK
BIRDLAND / MARCH 18-22
Bassist Gary Peacock's steadfast expression beautifully adheres to any musical situa-
tion he finds himself in. Cutting his teeth in the trios of saxophonist Albert Ayler and
pianist Bill Evans, Peacock's melodic sprints and harmonic dashes underline a musician
who is ready, willing and able to juggle the many responsibilities of the modern jazz
bassist. For the past 30 years, Peacock has been a member of pianist Keith Jarrett's
Standards Trio alongside drummer Jack DeJohnette, becoming one of the most premier
and longstanding jazz trios. Their most recent release, 2013's Somewhere, showcases
standards written by everyone from Miles Davis to Leonard Bernstein. For his shows at
Birdland, Peacock has rounded out his Now This trio with drummer Joey Baron and
pianist Marc Copland. EW
RUSS KASSOFF
SAINT PETER'S CHURCH / MARCH 19
One of the jazz world's underrated gems, pianist, composer and arranger Russ Kassoff
has long served as back up to some of music's most renowned figures including Frank
Sinatra and Liza Minnelli. However, when left to his own devices as a bandleader,
Kassoff proves to be a delightfully chameleonic figure whose performances and compo-
sitions might evoke anything from classic stride form to a contemplative piano touch
reminiscent of Keith Jarrett. Kassoff's 17-piece big band offers a perfect vehicle for his
broad musical vision and its performances can include repertoire ranging from originals
to Ellington to even arrangements of Tori Amos. Vocalist Catherine Dupuis, a longtime
collaborator of Kassoff, joins as a special guest in what is a must-see event for any big
band aficionado. You can also hear them at NYC Baha’í Center Feb. 25. SH
STEVEN BERNSTEIN
DIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / MARCH 23
Steven Bernstein's stunning command of the trumpet beautifully anchors the melody
and remains aggressive without overwhelming the song at hand. Whether leading his
own groups or working as a hired gun with the likes of pianist Carla Bley and drummer
Bobby Previte, Bernstein carefully walks the line between unrelenting sonic mania and
controlled calm. Bernstein's musical output is that of the consummate musician with
projects that include jazz groups, television/movie scoring, pop arranging, and compos-
ing for theatrical productions. Bernstein will bring his Diaspora Soul, an R&B and Afro-
Cuban influenced group that performs arrangements of traditional Jewish cantorials
and popular songs, to Dizzy's as part of the Town Hall Newish Jewish Music Festival
dedicated to Jewish and Israeli traditions found in contemporary music. EW
ANAT FORT
CORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / MARCH 26
A native of Israel, pianist Anat Fort was initially taught classical music but her love of
improvisation drew her to the U.S. to study jazz at William Paterson University and,
eventually, with piano master Paul Bley. Fort draws from many stylistic influences as
a performer and composer, equally at home playing introspective ballads and adding
unexpected accents into her compelling works. Although she has been on the New York
jazz scene for more than a decade, Fort has recorded infrequently; but her releases have
earned critical praise, particularly her adventurous ECM CD A Long Story, which fea-
tures the late drummer Paul Motian, the eclectic clarinetist Perry Robinson and bassist
Ed Schuller. Fort will be accompanied by her longtime bassist Gary Wang and veteran
drummer Matt Wilson at Cornelia Street. KD

NEW JERSEY JAZZ

Gary Walker, “Morning Jazz Host”, WBGO, 88.3 FM/wbgo.org
DAVID HAZELTINE
BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH / MARCH 1
David Hazeltine has seen wide horizons as a pianist in jazz, from his early years in
Milwaukee at the Jazz Gallery, playing alongside Sonny Stitt, Eddie Harris and Chet
Baker, to his two decades in Manhattan, where he's been featured with Louis Hayes,
Jon Faddis, Ernestine Anderson and Marlena Shaw. Hazeltine is an integral part of
the collective One For All and has made 25 recordings as a leader, focusing on his own
material as well as tributes to Bill Evans, Horace Silver and Bud Powell. Cedar
Walton once said, "David's style has a deep commitment to jazz history while commu-
nicating a wealth of today's ideas." Joined by Nat Reeves on bass and Billy Drummond
on drums they will be featuring standards and originals and, as Hazeltine says,
"swinging as much as humanly possible!"
ANTOINETTE MONTAGUE
DORTHAAN'S PLACE / MARCH 23
Jazz Times once wrote of singer Antoinette Montague, "Jazz players love to accompa-
ny a genuine jazz singer and Antoinette is as real as they come; good range, phrasing
and taste." Montague's father would often drop her off at the library in Newark to
spend hours listening to Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington recordings. Later,
encouragement from Etta Jones would help her develop into a performer featured in
most New York and New Jersey clubs, fronting small groups and big bands.
Montague's recorded efforts show clearly that she's comfortable with belting out a
blues or whispering a love song. At this brunch-time concert, Montague will do a spe-
cial salute to Etta Jones, Carrie Smith and Dionne Warwick, joined by pianist Danny
Mixon, bassist Lisle Atkinson and drummer Bobby Sanabria.
PAT METHENY
COUNT BASIE THEATRE / MARCH 23
Guitarist Pat Metheny's versatility is almost without peer regardless of the instru-
ment. From his early years with Gary Burton to his group recordings, to solo efforts
and his one-man Orchestrion, Metheny has proven that he looks at the guitar as an
open road. Last year he received his 20th Grammy and DownBeat readers voted him
into its Hall of Fame—the youngest member, alongside Charlie Christian, Django
Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery. In Red Bank, he'll feature music from his Unity
Band’s brand-new recording Kin (Nonesuch) with Chris Potter on woodwinds, Ben
Williams on bass, Antonio Sanchez on drums and newest member, Giulio Carmassi,
on piano, trumpet, trombone, French horn, cello and voice.
LIONEL LOUEKE
UNION COUNTY PAC / MARCH 29
Lionel Loueke came from poor beginnings in the West African country of Benin. As a
young student of guitar, when his strings broke, he replaced them with bicycle brake
cables until he could afford to buy real strings. This persistence guided him to jazz
after hearing a George Benson album. He studied in Paris and later attended the
Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at USC. There, he played with faculty member
Terence Blanchard and was eventually featured on Blanchard's CDs Bounce and
Flow (Blue Note). Loueke went on to record with Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves,
Wayne Shorter, Charlie Haden and Santana. On his own recordings, Loueke fuses
traditional African music with modern jazz harmonies, unique vocal inflections and
complex time signatures. In Rahway, Loueke will perform alongside bassist Michael
Olatuja and drummer John Davis.

"Cedar was a big part of my music life."
During his early jazz years, Cables recalls
standing behind Walton at Club Ruby in
Queens, listening, watching and learning.

Mulgrew Miller, another pianist the jazz
world lost last year. "I remember him when
he was young and skinny," Cables says
with a laugh. "He was serious and soulful,
but also had a great sense of humor."
Trumpeter Woody Shaw, a former band
mate of both Miller and Cables, would
often talk about Mulgrew, Cables says.
"Woody had an eye for people who were
special."
Several compositions on the CD were
written by some of the iconic musicians
Cables played with over the years, includ-

In late 1979 Zoot Sims had a gig with his quartet at Gulliver's in New Jersey. Turk Mauro
went out to hear him, and Zoot invited him to sat in on the second set. Turk chose "Body and
Soul" as his feature number, and got into such an emotional rendition that there were tears
in his eyes when he finished. Turk cracked up when Zoot went to the microphone and said,
"That was very nice, but you're supposed to make the audience cry!"
Maria Judge has put together a nice book about her late uncle, Jake Hanna. Hal Leonard
is the publisher. One of the stories she tells is about a gig Jake was doing with Woody
Herman at the Detroit Auto Show. Afterward they were heading out to a bar and passed the
room where Bobby Vinton was entertaining. Woody said he wanted to catch the act, so they
went in and watched while Vinton played the clarinet, then the trombone, the sax, the bass
and the drums. Then he played the piano and finished with a tap dance. Woody looked over
at Jake and said, "That kid can't do anything!"
