Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Rice is most important human crop in the world, directly feeding more people than any

other crop. It can be source of energy as it contains carbohydrates that later convert to glucose

when being digested. Rice is unique because it can grow in wet environment than other crop

can’t survive in such environment are abundant across Asia.

In Isabela, rice is the major crop from which farmers obtain their income to provide the

needs of their families. Isabela is known as “Rice Capital and the North” for almost 90% of the

crop comes from rice. To maintain this title, farmers wanted to prevent pests that could kill rice

plants in the fields.

A pests animal or plant which has a harmful effect on humans, their food or living

conditions. It includes animals which attack and eat vegetables and cereal crops such as snails.

Ponacea Canaculata, commonly known as golden apple snail is a species of large freshwater

snails with grills and an operculum, an aquatic gastropod mollusk in family Ampullariidae, the

apple snails.

As available plants, Ampalaya (Momordica Charantoa) and Serpentina (Rauvolfia

Serpentina) are known for their bitter taste,. Despite of their taste, they posses medicinal

properties. Ampalaya contains high concentration of vitamins, minerals and alkaloids. On the

other hand, serpentina has antioxidant property. Both of these plants is used lower blood glucose

level and to treat cancer.

By these considerable properties, conducting a study regarding Pesticidal effect of

ampalaya and serpentina, would help people to find organic way of killing pesticides such as

snail and prevent them from destroying rice fields.

Statement of the Problem

Generally. The study aims to indicates snails in the field and to help the farmers rebuild their

farm and to gain more crops.

1. What is the Pesticidal effect of locally selected plants against snail?

2. How can this plant help the farmers to produce more crops?

What is the most effective plant in killing snail?

3. What is the least effective plant in killing snail?

Significance of the Study

1. Poor Filipinos- this study significant to our fellowmen who don’t have or afford to buy

commercial pesticides for their plants, as it serves an alternatives and efficient way of

indicating snails on the plants and lessening its effect.

2. Researchers- this study may also provide a path for a more-in-depth research studies

regarding the:

 Find an alternative way of eradicating snails.

 Other useful of Serpentina and Ampalaya.

3. Farmers- it can be a best option for them to lessen the effect of pests in their crops

especially the snails.

4. Ordinary People- the researcher aim to provide who’ll eat the rice that comes from this

crops be more safe than to those that comes from inorganic procedure.

5. Students-

6. Other Professionals-

Scope and Limitation

This research study focused on the pesticidal capability of serpentina and ampalaya on

eradicating the effect of snails in the plants especially crops. Likewise, gathering of the selected

plants pesticide (Snails and can also include other pests) is limited only within the vicinity of San

Pablo and Cabagan. The researchers will be conducting the said research in the Ctabayungan

Cabagan Isabela at the Abana’s residence to be specific.

Definition of Terms

1. Pesticide- a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to

cultivated plants to animals.

2. Snails- a small animal with a long, soft body, no legs, and spiral-shaped shell. Snails

move very slowly.

3. Ampalaya- known as bitter melon. Bitter gourd, bitter squash, balsam-pear, is a tropical

and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitacee, widely grown in Asia, Africa, and the

Caribbean for its edible fruit.

4. Serpertina- a dark green plant consisting of hydrated consisting of hydrated magnesium

silicate, sometimes mottled or spotted like a snake’s skin.

5. Rice field- a field where rice is grown.
